Richmond, Virginia sits in the center of Virginia. The location puts it about a two hour drive to Washington D.C., the Appalachian Mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean. Situated right along the fall lines of the James River, the views are some of the best in Virginia. Richmond had an estimated population of 218,000 people in 2014 and an estimated age median of about 34 years. The estimated median household income in Richmond is about $40,000. Richmond offers a wide variety of events. Everything from cultural, seasonal, entertainment, historical, and artistic are offered. The history of the city shows us that it has come very far in the last few decades. In the past 15 years, overall crime has dropped significantly. Even though Richmond is situated in a very accessible location, the traffic caused by the conjunction of many different major highways can become a major issue. The local government of Richmond has been working towards trying to decrease the amount of traffic with toll routes like the Powhite Parkway and the Pocahontas Parkway. Another major issue with location is the James River itself. The River is a major asset that must be maintained constantly. In the past, the River was highly polluted. In recent years, the conservation of the river and the ecosystems dependent on the river have become a major priority for the city. One of the reasons for this is the diversity in the city. Richmond has become a place that welcomes all nationalities which has allowed for the boom in diverse food and beverages. As time continues, I don’t see any change in this at all. More and more people with open restaurants. Also, the city’s continued interest in the organic and healthy food trend sweeping the nation will continue. Farmer’s markets like the one in Shockoe Bottom in downtown Richmond will thrive and new ones will begin to open. The alcoholic beverage industry will never be the same either. The rise of these companies will change the tourism industry in Richmond forever. Finally, Richmond has always depended on the local tourists. I’ve lived outside of Richmond for my entire life.
