Hunting is a sport in which a predator searches for prey for either survival, or sport. “The most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, is an incredible story that shows that man can be the prey in a hunt. Zaroff demonstrates that he is an intelligent, and anxious person that is bored unless he is on the hunt, even if the prey is another man. First off, Zaroff is an incredibly intelligent . Zaroff shows off his intelligence throughout the entire story, outwitting most people with ease. He make it clear that he is smart when he is under the tree with Ransford above him. On page 225 Zaroff says that “Giant rocks with razor edges crouch like a sea monster with open jaws.”- Zaroff. This is him explaining how people get stuck
on the island in the first place. Those are only a few examples of how he is an intelligent person. Secondly Zaroff is very anxious. Zaroff is a very anxious person, always ready for a challenging hunt. He makes this clear on page 222 when he says that “No real thrill left in tigers, no real danger.” - Zaroff. This shows how anxious Zaroff is for a thrilling hunt. He has anxious to the point of using people as prey, which only proves this even more. Thirdly Zaroff shows that he is bored. His quote on page 225 “No real thrill left in tigers, no real danger.” shows that he is also bored of hunting easy prey, therefor he searches for a different prey. He also must be bored hunting humans, mostly because he want to hunt Ransford since he hunts as well. This goes along well with him being anxious as well. Lastly, with his traits put together he is a huntsman who is always ready for a Challenge. He is willing to hunt anything that could take his life and prove to be a challenge, and rewarding prey. This is why he is the top predator in “The Most Dangerous Game”.
For example, in the beginning of the story, he believed animals were just unintelligent creatures who didn’t understand anything. At the end, his feelings change. “Dark and troubled times bring out a person’s true nature” also applies to General Zaroff. In the beginning of the story, he appeared to be trustworthy and welcoming, proving Rainsford with delicious meals and luxurious bed sheets and pajamas. As the story continues and the tension rises, the reader sees that General Zaroff is malicious and he does not care about the people around
For many people, hunting is just a sport, but for some it is a way of life. In Rick Bass’s “Why I Hunt” he explains how he got to where he lives now and what he thinks of the sport of hunting. There are many things in the essay that I could not agree more with, and others that I strongly disagree. Overall this essay provides a clear depiction of what goes through the mind of a hunter in the battle of wits between them and the animal.
If animals were humans, then General Zaroff would almost be as bad as Adolf Hitler. General Zaroff, a character in Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” should be considered a negative character because of the way the author portrays him though indirect characterization, such as what he does, what he says, how other characters react to him, and what he looks like. Although there is plenty of indirect characterization, there is little to none direct characterization.
In “ The Most Dangerous Game,” Connell portrays several instances in the text indicating that Zaroff is indeed evil. Close to the beginning of the story Connell writes, "I want to show you my new collection of heads. Will you come with me to the library?"” (76). In this quote Zaroff is boasting about his collection of human Heads, this instance in the story shows that Zaroff collecting ...
Do you know the definition of a serial killer? Maybe you have your own definition, such as: a person that mass murders people in the grocery store. Or: a crazy human being that kills people more than once. According to Dictionary.com, a serial killer is defined as “a person who carries out a series of murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern.” General Zaroff from the story The Most Dangerous Game fits almost exactly into that definition. He makes the worst decisions over all of our short stories because he takes innocent lives with great intention, he takes immense pleasure in doing so, and he does it repeatedly.
Zaroff gives the appearance that he is well-educated, sophisticated and distinguished. He is a cultured man. He comes from great prosperity, sumptuous living and strong military spirit, all of this makes Zaroff think he is entitled and therefore should not be denied what he wishes in life. In the short story, one of the ways that Zaroff demonstrates these characteristics is by how he lives. He has a beautiful and well decorated Chateau on a remote island. The way in which he speaks indicates a certain level of intelligence. “You’ll find the game worth playing, the general said enthusiastically. Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess!”. The General views his game as a contest of intelligence, ability, knowledge, skill and experience just like those that play the game of chess....

What is he searching for? What is his attitude toward his quest? What do these details suggest to you about his character?
Hunting has become one of most popular sports, dating all the way back to the first Homo Sapiens known as hunter-gatherers. They were called hunter-gatherers because they hunted for food, gathered and then skinned it to eat. Most humans lived this way until about 12,000 years ago.
The value of his life increases as he runs from Zaroff and the hounds thru the woods. He also refuses to kill Zaroff when he has the opportunity because he has valued the life of other human beings. In the time he was being chased, he learned to even value the lives of the other animals in the world, and he thinks of of being an animal at bay. Furthermore, he will try to not become what he fears.
Overhunting: is the practice or the act of killing animals (wild animals) as game or sport.
As the world continues to grow and develop, one of the many things that have we’ve done since we existed was hunting. Hunting is the practice of killing wildlife. It used to be that hunting was for subsistence. These hunters hunted for food, shelter, clothing, and overall, their cultural survival. There is plenty of evidence that suggests that humans have been hunting to survive for a very long time, and while we may live in the twenty-first century, some cultures still hunt to survive. Despite this justifiable reason for hunting, nowadays, many hunters are not subsistence hunters – they hunt for sport. While this may be a controversial topic for everyone and we all have our own opinions, I believe
hunting is also a way of how people live, they hunt and grow their food, it’s called living off the land, it’s a get away from the city’s and all civilisation
