Richard Whitfield, Sr. was born November 30, 1926, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Dallas and Eugenia Whitfield, who both preceded him in death. He was the seventh of seven children born to this union. His three brothers (Rossie, Dallas, Dossie) and three sisters (Margaret, Lula, Frances) preceded him in death.
Richard was educated in the Indianapolis Public School System and attended Crispus Attucks High School. He was a Veteran of the United States Army and while serving our beloved country held the occupation as a cook. After his honorable discharge from the Unite States Army, Richard obtained employment as a general contractor and maintenance engineer for 40+ years and later was employed at Crown Hill as a grounds keeper until his health began to fail.
Richard professed Christ at an early age was baptized in Jesus name and received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. After confessing his faith, he united with Christ Temple #2 Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Lillian Mason. He later moved his membership serving under the late Bishop Edwin H. Vaughn and Bishop William D. Pippins. Richard joined Bethel Tabernacle Apostolic Church in 2005, serving under the late Suffragan Bishop Owen Young and current pastor, District Elder Alford Amos. David raised my mother and three other children from his previous marriage. My grandfather and I talked for about an hour or so, the interview became more of a conversation, it was very comfortable for him to talk to me about his life, and no question was really off limits; him and I have a wonderful and close relationship. His father owned the sawmill and was the Union Bank president. Chet went to Mena high school. He played baseball, basketball, football, and track. He had two older brothers and one younger sister. He graduated from high school in 1920. After high school, Chet went to the University of Arkansas and got a degree in advertising. He was the co-editor of the University’s humor magazine and was a Razorback cheerleader. After the University of Arkansas, he went to study at Chicago Institute of Fine Arts. Born in Wright City, Missouri, June 21, 1892, he was educated at Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Illinois; Eden Theological Seminary, Webster Groves, Missouri; and Yale Divinity School. In 1915 he was ordained in the ministry of the Evangelical Synod of North America and made pastor of the Bethel Evangelical Church of Detroit. He held that post until 1928, at which time he joined the faculty of the Union Theological Seminary, New York City, where he taught for 30 years.
