)Born on the 16th of December, 1908 in the town of Angles, Spain, Varo was brought up by both her parents alongside her two brothers. She grew up in a highly educated environment; her father introduced her to scientific and philosophical readings and even literature by great novelists including Edgar Allan Poe and Alexandre Dumas. He wanted to enrich her early life with as much knowledge as possible and from a variety of sources and subjects. (1)Varo’s interest for painting was founded by her father teaching her the principles of technical drawing. Not only did he heavily influence her art through providing her with books and teaching her how to draw, but also through his profession. Her mother influenced her as well, but not as straightforwardly. She was a Catholic who ardently wanted her daughter to follow in her footsteps, so upon the family establishing themselves in Madrid, Spain in 1917, (2)she placed her in a Catholic school. Through these experiences with her strictly religious mother, the young Varo developed rebellious feelings towards religious principles that lasted her entire life and were also evidenced in her paintings. In her mid-teens, she began her formal art training at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid, where she created her first painting. Later, she attended the San Fernando Roy Academy of Fine Arts from which she graduated and received a diploma that allowed her to teach drawing in 1930.
