Why you Always Lying ?
I did not do it, I swear. We hear people tell us throughout our lives as we know what they did, but they are people that lie right to us when the truth would not even be as bad as they make it out to be. People lie every day, and some lie so much they don 't see the true reality anymore. Is it a bad thing to lie ? Does lying have a negative effect per lie you tell? Well in Richard Gunderman’s article“Is Lying Bad for Us?” he sure thinks so. Gunderman argues that everyday people lie. Gunderman also state that the more people lie the less of real reality people see and live. Gunderman says if people continue to lie everyday “we end up leading inauthentic and irresponsible lives” (Gunderman). Gunderman feels that people

Delusion lying is a big one, that majority of people use without realizing it. What is Delusion ? Ericsson defines it as “Delusion, a cousin of dismissal, is the tendency to see excuses as facts. It 's a powerful lying tool because it filters out information that contradicts what we want to believe” (Ericsson 480). People tell themselves reason for why they doing things everyday, but deep down they are not always the true reason for why they do what they do. People use an object or situation as a reason for there actions. People use these reason to avoid the truth behind why they do something because it is something they are ashamed of. People tell themselves they look good, even tho they may hate it or they drink because of the things in their lives as Ericsson says “Alcoholics who believe that the problems in their lives are legitimate reasons for drinking rather than results of the drinking offer the classic example of deluded thinking” (Ericsson 480). People use these small lie to hide the truth from themselves, and that can hurt them in the long run. If a person can not see that they have a drinking problem and they keep ignoring reality they could wind up dead or in the hospital. This is something no person would want to go through to get to a point in life where you do not see the true reality anymore. How long does it take for a person to get the hint and be sick of there own lies? Even Gunderman feels we should not lie to ourselves, as he says “Whenever possible, however, we should be honest with others and ourselves” (Gunderman). People all know what is happening in their minds. People can control whether or not to see the true reality or one of their own making. People know that if you live a mile from the store and you 're just going to get a small item that instead of driving your car that is killing the environment every day that people ignore. A person could ride their bike instead and save a little. Delusion
In “The Truth about Lying” Judith Viorst explains the four different kinds of lying. She categorizes lies as social lies, peace-keeping lies, protective lies, and trust-keeping lies. Social lies are lies that are “acceptable and necessary”, they are the little white lies most people use all the time. Peace keeping lies are told when the liar is trying to protect themselves from getting in trouble or causing any conflict. The protective lies are far more serious, are often told because of fear that the truth would be “too damaging” for the person being lied to. Lastly, there are the trust keeping lies, which are lies in which the liar is lying for a friend in order to keep a promise. Viorst finds that most of these lies, while some are more acceptable than others, are necessary and she can understand them.
When confronted with a problem, why does the human brain default to lying? Dishonesty is never a solution, although it may seem like the best option in the spur of a moment. My grandma always gave the example of her youth: she avoided and deceived her friend’s sister because the little girl riled everyone. Come to find out, the sister passed the following month due to an illness. I could never imagine the guilt she experienced. Nevertheless, everyone has been deceitful before and many characters were in the tragedy, The Crucible, by playwright Arthur Miller. Reasons for lying are understandable, but most people will admit that mendacity has only caused pain. Lying’s outcome is never positive: it may seem like a good option, for falsehood can save a person’s life, benefit someone, and it eases stress, but these are all transitory.
The people who claim that they do not lie are probably lying when they say it. Whether it is to deceive authority or just to play a joke on a friend, it is part of human nature to lie. In the novel The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby takes on a character of wealth and luxury. Gatsby wants to win back his love interest from five years ago, so he secretly becomes wealthy through owning an illegal drug business, using his abundance of money to impress her. In contrast, in Tobias Wolff’s “The Liar,” he tells a story of teenage James as he lies about his life to appear more fascinating. He lies not because he wants to, but because it comes naturally to him. Both stories convey people struggling to find the purpose of their
Stephanie Ericsson’s The Ways We Lie, analyzes and reflects on how lying has simply become the norm in our society. We all lie, there is not one person in the world that does not lie. Most people lie because they are afraid of telling the truth, however what they do not know is telling a lie can lead them in the wrong direction because many things can happen when lying to a person. The person can find out when everything unravels that person will not have trust in you and you would be known as a liar. To every action there is a consequence, so why not deal with just one consequence when telling the
In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson, the author uses her knowledge to talk about the different ways of lies and how those lies affect the liar, as well as the people who had been told lies. According to the author’s essay, there are 10 types of lies that people encounter every single day: the White Lie, Facades, Ignoring the Plain Facts, Deflecting, Omission, Stereotypes and Cliches, Groupthink, Out-and-Out Lies, Dismissal, and Delusion. Throughout the essay, it is connoted that people are lying in various ways even though they are not intended to. I had been taught that lying is a bad habit. According to Ericsson, there are many types of lie and I did three of them in my life: the White Lie, Omission, and Out-and-Out Lies; however, I can defend my lies for good purposes.
Ever told a lie, or even been caught in a lie? If so, stay tuned to listen why Phillip, Dr. Seymour, and Jake barlow lied in the book Nothing But The Truth by Avi realistic fiction. In the book Nothing But The Truth it's about a boy named Phillip Malloy who goes to school to only be suspended for humming the nation anthem. As time goes by in the story Phillip story becomes nation wide news, leading to the school and Philip to be in deep trouble. In the novel many people lied, which could have lead to a completely different outcome if Phillip,Dr. Seymour, and Jake Barlow didn't lie.
Author Allison Kornet in her article (1997) “The Truth about Lying: Has Lying Gotten a Bad Rap” states that deception or lying has become a part of everyone’s life. A person lies or deceives as often as he brushes his teeth or combs his hair. Many psychologists have neglected or ignored the concept of deception or lying and its effects on everyone’s life. Kornet explains that in the previous two to three decades, the psychologists started noticing or analyzing the effects of a person’s deception on others or why a person lies so many times in his day-to-day life. The person might learn lying from childhood
Let me start by asking you a question: What is surprisingly untrustworthy, can cause numerous mental health issues, and is hated by scientists everywhere? Your memory! Very few people have stopped to think about memories, and almost no one knows the horrors that come along with memories. Throughout time, the concept of memories has been overlooked and never really questioned until recently. Scientists have discovered that the cause of many mental health issues is our own memories. Also, the high level of confidence that we have in our memories is very misleading. Our memory is so self-destructive and unreliable that scientists have started creating ways to erase memories.
That, like unreliable narrators, individuals often ‘lie’ to themselves in order to cover up the actual
Throughout life, people are faced with moral decisions that will impact not only themselves but also, the people they surround themselves with. One of these moral decisions people encounter daily is truthfulness in their actions and words. In Blackburn’s novel, “Being Good”, he states “It is not easy to find a stable attitude to the stringency of the prohibition of lying.” I agree with his quote because everyone tends to lie no matter the magnitude of the lie, in order to protect themselves and the people they care about. Although Blackburn believes it is only ethical to lie on occasion, German philosopher, Immanuel Kant affirms that lying is always morally wrong, no matter what the situation is. Though lying can be seen as a deplorable action,
People tend to lie in everyday conversations to look and feel more likable. What if the truth could set you free, help make friends, or even be a part of a life long friendship? The argument usually brought up is, "Is it always best to tell the truth no matter the consequences?" I've been in certain situations were lies have caught up with me. That is to say, there isn't one way out of a lie, and you usually have to admit the truth one way or another. Some people think that lying isn't a big deal as long as they are small (white lies), but with enough of them you will be caught in the middle with no way out. You will be trapped in your lies, and don't ever think more lies will fix it! Lying isn't a good habit, and could trap you from a world of justice and incorruptible friends.
At the same time, however, even though people have the tendency to be dishonest, not all lies are legally prosecutable. When asked to judge another person’s appearance, for example, some tend to lie in favor of that person, just to make the person feel better. When trying to avoid doing chores, some tend to lie about being too occupied with homework. Those are what I considered to be lies in the names of politeness and laziness; lies that cause no harm to others.
Mark Twain said “If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything”. The validity of those words rings true till this day. The effects of a lie or lies always seem to lead to a path of extreme detriment. Although I have experienced both sides of a lie I often wonder if the reasoning behind lying is always just. Do people lie to protect? Or is a lie an extension of deceit? These are questions that many people can relate and reflect on because we have all been lied to. Whether you were told white lies about the Easter bunny and Santa Claus or someone lied to you about their whereabouts any false statement is quite simply a lie. The effects of a lie are what I have the most experience in and it is those effects which caused me to be a liar in turn. Living a lie or maintaining lies an individual has told over time is a tiresome process and a difficult one to bear. My experience in dealing with a lie began at a young age. I was often enamored with associating with people older than myself and I frequently felt I had to establish that my experiences were equal or greater than theirs.
Everything about the concept of self deception is controversial among philosophers and psychologists. When philosophers and psychologists discuss self deception, they usually focus on unconscious motivations and intentions. They also tend to think of self deception as a bad thing. When it comes to explaining how self deception works they focus on self interest, prejudice, desire, insecurity, and other psychological factors unconsciously affecting in a negative way the will to believe. An example...
Self-protection is the main factor of telling lies. According to some, people tell lies to shield themselves from danger, punishment, or from an activity they
