In the context of nursing, the ability to use all three rhetorical writing and communication styles is a necessary skill set. Casual, middle and formal styles, each serve different purposes and, if used appropriately, can greatly improve one’s ability to inform, communicate and influence.
A casual style of conversation is frequently used by medical professionals to put their patients at ease. Casual conversation is a quick way to establish intimacy between strangers, therefore an excellent tool for a nurse who often has very little time to establish trust with their patients. A good nurse needs to encourage their patients to confide specific and, at times, difficult knowledge about themselves or their situation. A seemingly more relaxed tone of writing can result in more complete medical history, and lead to a more accurate diagnosis. Texting is another form of casual writing prevalent in the modern medical industry. A hospital patient whose diagnosis is not yet identified is likely to have a chart with detailed and copious notes to share accurate information between the various doctors and nurses working with them. This type of writing will include opinions and conjecture about possible outcomes for the patient’s health, along with written out proposals of possible treatment plans. This middle style of writing is one that is still approachable to patients, but can help with patients’ feelings of helplessness and insure mutual respect by giving details and more widely explaining information being discussed.
