1. In Song of Myself 15, Walt Whitman personifies “America” as its people, living, breathing and working towards the greater goal of contributing to their country. This sense of unabashed patriotism pervades Whitman’s prose. Whitman uses simple language, often a noun describing the occupation followed by a verb describing the task. The repetition of this simple form exhibits the American masses working harmoniously. “The pilot seizes the king-pin…, the mate stands braced in the whale-boat…, the duck shooter walks by silent and cautious stretches”, (Whitman 33). “America” is its people working together with one another, or as Whitman says “Of these one and all I weave the song of myself” (Whitman 34). In How It Feels to Be Colored Me, Zora Hurston’s “America” is an opportunity not to be missed. With Emancipation providing her ancestors with freedom, Reconstruction providing the necessary push, and the generation preceding her providing the guidance, Hurston feels that she is poised to succeed in post-slavery “America”. Her African ancestry may arise in certain moments, such as listening to jazz music, but she always “creeps back slowly to the veneer we call civilization with the last tone” (Hurston). She describes all the races of “America” as bags, filled with things valuable and worthless. If the bags were emptied into a pile and refilled, “none would be altered greatly” (Hurston). Even though “America” is filled with many races and the prejudice that comes with them, every human is still the same underneath. Everyone belongs to one singular conscionseness in “America”, as “the Great Stuffer of Bags” probably filled everyone’s bag from the same pile. Hurston describes it as “the Great Soul” (Hurston). Everyone citizen of “America” is a part of “America”, whether the country is “right or wrong”

In ‘How it feels to be colored me’ Neale Hurston opens up to her pride and identity as an African-American. Hurston uses a wide variety of imagery, diction using figurative language freely with metaphors. Her tone is bordering controversial using local lingo.
Whenever young Hurston engaged in dialogue with her black peers, they would talk to her in ebonics and she could only respond in a formal register (27). This contrast in use of language automatically connotates that her black peers as less intelligent, polite, and proper which she covertly implies is blackness. Whereas she antithetically appears more intelligent and fit with virtue through her use of proper English which she assigns to whiteness. By the same token, Hurston not “stumbling and spelling words out” like her classmates while reading outloud to Miss Johnstone and Miss Hurd further differentiates her from connotations carried with colored people and also implicates that the inner whiteness intrinsic to her is what essentially makes her more important than her pigmented equals (35). In “How It Feels to Be Colored Me,” Hurston breaks from the tradition of her time by rejecting the idea that the African American people should be ashamed or saddened by the color of their skin. She tells other African Americans that they should embrace their color and be proud of who they are. She writes, “[A socialite]…has nothing on me. The cosmic Zora emerges,” and “I am the eternal feminine with its string of beads” (942-943). Whether she feels “colored” or not, she knows she is beautiful and of value. The nature of an ideology is completely personal; one’s interpretation may vary greatly from another’s interpretation. This is demonstrated in the two poems, “America” by Claude McKay and “Let America be America Again” by Langston Hughes. Both of these poems emerge from the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, and though these two poems each describe an ideological viewpoint of America as a place and a concept, the two speakers view the subject differently from one another. Both poets employ similar sound devices, yet the tones and themes vary between the two works.
Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" is a vision of the American spirit, a vision of Whitman himself. It is his cry for democracy, giving each of us a voice through his poetry. Each of us has a voice and desires, and this is Whitman's representation of our voices, the voice of America. America, the great melting pot, was founded for freedom and democracy, and this poem is his way of re-instilling these lost American ideals. In this passage from "Song of Myself" Whitman speaks through his fellow man and speaks for his fellow man when his voice is not socially acceptable to be heard.
Whitman speaks of the ideas of being unique and also of being part of a large nation. This idea is seen as he writes “I’d sow a seed for thee of endless Nationality” (Whitman, Line 4). Whitman goes on to relay his thoughts about not only being an American, but also speaks of the future and how things about America can be changed. He reinforces this idea in the lines, “As Life and Nature are not great with reference to the Present only, but greater still from what is yet to come” (Whitman, Lines 10-11). Whitman’s words seem to be conveying that every person has a chance to change their life by rebelling and trying to do something great.
