The image ‘Trump Sits Alone,’ was taken at the beginning of the G-20 European meeting (Elbaum, 2017). The target audience of the image are adults, primarily voters or those interested in politics. As the G-20 is an international event, the image is also targeting a universal audience.
The photojournalist relies on ethos to convey the message that Donald Trump is not a suitable leader and will ultimately isolate America, to the audience. The photojournalist uses ethos through Donald Trump’s authoritative figure. As he is the President of the United States, the audience acknowledges that he symbolises America. Although, the image is somewhat mocking Trump, the photojournalist allows the audience to formulate resentment against Trump. This solidified by Trumps arrogance towards the other influential people as he remains seated alone before the meeting and appears to be refusing to greet anyone. With his arrogance clearly depicted in the image, it allows the audience to interoperate his code of ethics and how he treats others. Thus, they begin to feel dislike towards the American President. Furthermore, with the conversing group juxtaposing Trump siting alone, it conveys the message that even influential figures cannot stand to be in his presence, which ultimately transfers onto the audience.
