Cheerios is a healthy cereal that uses ethos to relay a message on people that are dieting. General Mills provides this message to those who have been eating unhealthy and want to find good diets. I chose this ad because this is one of my favorite cereals and want to know more on how and if it actually lowers cholesterol. The ad is bright yellow and with the cereal box in the center, it is appealing to the eye. This is a very popular message seen in different types of media, such as commercials and the Internet. General Mills uses ethos with the Cheerios box and the language used to determine credibility.
This ad's message is that Cheerios is supposed to help people struggling with high cholesterol. I think there is ethos in the quote, "Proven
to lower cholesterol," suggests that people who see this cereal will want to buy it because of how it tries to promote better health. This can make the ad gain credibility in one way. When referring to the FDA, it can also result in a gain of credibility because the cereal got approved before being sold along with research showing it lowers cholesterol. However, that quote is a general statement that is overused and lacks an explanation to it. This results in a loss of credibility. Not only the words may target these people, but also the heart on the box may lure people to buy it because the strawberries on the box increases attractiveness. In other words, this ad may be similar to how commercials say a certain product is supposed to work very well, but people end up wasting money on that product. The box being large suggests that people will think it is important to them to buy it. In addition, the ad does not depend on the logo to bolster credibility. This might be because most people have their eyes on the top or middle part of the ad. Instead, the logo is placed in the corner. Ethos is used in where it says it can lower cholesterol and the heart since this is supposed to make the ad more credible. The ad could also be mainly targeting older people, as it will not get as much attention from little kids. Some may speculate that this will do the opposite of what the ad suggests. Many ads will end up doing this, but the people must trust the company and be able to rely on their trustworthiness. Younger people may not have the experience to understand as the main target audience that they could be scammed to similar ads to Cheerios. In order to understand the full effects of it, exercising is essential along with dieting. The use of the word "you," connotes how it personalizes it for yourself by making it your own choice if you want to buy it or not. The ad itself does not show any studies or results saying that people's cholesterol went down after a certain amount of time, so this may also make it lose credibility. On the other hand, "The 1 and Only," suggests that the healthy benefits are only found in this particular cereal. The specific words like, "100% whole grain" and "With 4 grams of dietary fiber and only 2 grams of fat per serving," suggests that experiments may have been run and the numbers making it more believable. To conclude, the Cheerios ad uses ethos targeting people with high cholesterol along with the ad to earn credibility by lowering bad cholesterol, which includes research. Ethos is shown on the box and ad with the language saying how credible it is as well as how the image is appealing to the eye. I thought the ad was mainly credible. Although there are some general statements, research and specific quotes outweigh the potential loss of credibility. This ad and similar ones are popular and are seen on media.

Still, the battle is not without heavy competition, and a good portion of it comes from Chipotle, a fast food Mexican restaurant that claims to only use completely organic ingredients in their food. Chipotle is constantly introducing advertisements claiming to have the natural ingredients while slandering the name of farmers everywhere. The commercial that was selected is “#Avosecrets” by Avocados From Mexico. This advertisement is a satire on mythical beliefs, superstitions, fables, and conspiracy theories. “#AvoSecrets” commendably persuades the middle class who enjoys time with friends to purchase Avocados From Mexico, an avocado product.
In 2013 Dodge Ram Trucks made a commitment to raise one million dollars for the Future Farmers of America. Dodge deemed 2013 to be “the year of the farmer” (Christian posts). During the fourth quarter of Super Bowl forty-seven Dodge aired a two minute and forty-two second tribute to the American farmer. The commercial “Farmer” was a slideshow that depicted American agricultural life. A speech given by Paul Harvey was used to narrate the tribute. As the commercial begins Paul Harvey’s name is printed onto a picture of a solitary cow standing in a frozen field. Then a picture of an old church is displayed and Harvey’s first words are: "And on the 8th day God looked down on His planned paradise and said, 'I need a caretaker!' So, God made a farmer”
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
Guns do belong in schools and prospective parents should be required to obtain a license before having kids. These are the dominant themes present in Jamie O'Meara's "Gun, Sex, and Education" and Janice Turner's "Should We Need a License to Be a Parent?" respectively. O'Meara argues that just like sex education arms the youth with knowledge, protecting them from irresponsible promiscuous behavior, gun education would serve the same purpose with respect to violence and guns. Similarly, Turner calls for new legislation but in an entirely different arena. She believes that in order to become parents, adults or non-adults for that matter, should meet a certain required standard and obtain a license in order to enter the most important profession of all: parenting. In order to develop these arguments, both writers utilize the general rhetorical strategies of comparison and argument. However, there is one key difference between the approaches taken to the development of the arguments. O'Meara's article has successfully employs ethical (ethos), emotional (pathos) and logical (logos) appeal whereas Turner's article takes a predominantly rational appeal (logos). Though both articles do an excellent job of conveying their points, all things considered, O'Meara's attempt at presenting a well balanced approach appealing to logic, emotion and ethics is more successful than Turner's attempt at presenting a solely logical argument.
This label makes Cheerios seem like a “healthy conscience choice” when in fact they are not healthy at all. The truth is that this breakfast cereal is highly processed and is best avoided despite the “healthy halo” of being approved by the National Heart Association and GMO free. The truth appears on the nutrition label and the ingredients (Wartman). “If you can’t pronounce it, don’t buy it” The voluntary labeling places a burden on the consumer. The average American is forced to navigate a confusing and cluttered food landscape” (Wartman).

Ethos has to do primarily with credibility. Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and is a means of convincing the audience of the character or credibility of the persuader or content. Examples of this in the billboard advertisement are the sponsors at the bottom: Baron Real Estate, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the American Lung Association.
In February 2010, a remarkable chef and speaker, Jamie Oliver, presented himself to a TED (Technology, Education, Design) audience as ruthlessly real and charismatic. Jamie Oliver successfully utilizes ethos, logos, and pathos to portray his belief that without the use of food education, America and its children will fall under the weight of its own obesity.

With a net worth of millions, Pepsi has featured many famous artists in our society, including the late singer and songwriter Michael Jackson. The term ethos describes an appeal to credibility or character. They do a great job establishing credibility because the athletes are seen performing with the drink, which in turn, would persuade viewers to believe that if they drink Gatorade that they will perform at the same level. The people in the commercial are able to directly link their greatest successes and failures to Gatorade by making it seem that it was a major part of their success. This helps build the credibility of all of the athletes in the ad because everyone wants to be able to believe that people like these athletes would know most about the energy drinks that fuel them in live games.
