Mary Sherry did do a good enough job of acknowledging the other side of the argument in her essay. She used her experience as an adult-literacy teacher to make points in her argument. The conversations with the students gave real insight of what the reason was that they struggled after high school. Her counter argument was strong enough to truly convince her audience that her thesis is correct. To make her counter argument she used examples of how she used to think about the reason of poor education. In her essay, Sherry described how the modern education system cheats students from an education and dooms them to fail later in life. In, “The Speech of Miss Polly Baker” written by Benjamin Franklin (one of the Founding Fathers) in 1747, brought up the disparities that were between men and women within the judicial system. Also, “The Speech of Miss Polly Baker” also briefly points out, how religion has been intertwined with politics. All throughout “The Speech of Miss Polly Baker,” Benjamin Franklin uses very intense diction and syntax to help support what he is trying to express to the rest of society. Also writing this speech in the view point of a women, greatly helps establish what he is trying to say. If Benjamin Franklin was to write it as a man, the speech my have not had the same passionate effect as it currently has.
In a letter Abigail Adams rights to her son, John Quincy Adams, who is traveling abroad with his father, John Adams, she advises her son to take advantage of the opportunities he has to utilize his own knowledge and talents to improve his sophistication and obtain growth in expanding im his character. Abigail Adams carried a maternal tone to encourage her son along his journey throughout the letter. Adams supports her position by giving examples with pathos, analogies and allusions.
At first I thought this was an essay trying to inform us on the issue of college students. As I have read deeper into it I have thought it out to be more of a persuasive essay. The whole essay examples are given in which students and parents whine for better grades. There were five or ten situations brought up where someone would get a B but thought they worked hard enough. By repeatedly giving us visualizations of this she is trying to get a point across. She makes this the main argument in the essay. She is trying to get the point across that kids are ridiculous to ask for a better grade. If the teacher gives them a grade of a B, she clearly means it. I chose this word because the tone of the first chapter seems rather dark. We hear stories of the hopes with which the Puritans arrived in the new world; however, these hopes quickly turned dark because the Purtains found that the first buildings they needed to create were a prison, which alludes to the sins they committed; and a cemetery, which contradicts the new life they hoped to create for themselves.
On January 12, 1780, Abigail Adams, former First Lady, wrote to her son, John Quincy Adams, while he was abroad with his father and brother. Adams addressed to her son and future President to maintain his spirit to learn and grow. She expressed his purpose through her motherly tone, various religious and historical allusions, use of logos, rhetorical question with simple syntax and use of metaphors.
However, such accusations such as laziness and entitlement, although common, have been prevalent amongst those of college age as proven in “A’s for Everyone.” Shepard had investigated the cause behind this and had put the blame on grade inflation in the years prior to entering college, the pressure to get superb grades due to high tuition costs, and most importantly the belief that “effort” constitutes a grade bonus. However, if one has entered the school system in America, one could see the relative ease in which one could improve their grades through inordinate amounts of extra credit. Those students with meaningless diplomas are the ones who have been cruising along even though they do not truly understand the materials that were taught to them. Those students that plainly do not understand the material taught to them make excuses. Teachers see these student’s excuses as a lack of attention and fail those students but instead all those students needed were a bit of guidance. It takes a teacher's involvement to understand, not a teacher's threat. Sherry argues that our educational system is to blame for cheating those students out of a proper education.
John Adams, a United States diplomat and soon to become the second president, is now traveling with his son. Virginia Woolf gave a speech in 1931 to the Women’s Service League about her life as a professional woman. Virginia Woolf was born in London in 1882 and became a professional novelist which was rare for a woman in this time period. She struggled with a mental illness and drowned herself in 1941.
