To achieve the requirements of the rhetoric in practice project, I decided to convey an anti-Carpe-diem through the use of a yonkoma in which was later posted to Tumblr. A yonkoma is a special type of Japanese Comic strip which consists of four panels usually culminating with some sort of joke or gag in the final panel. In these panels I used a light-hearted tone along with negatively associating Carpe-diem like ideals through dialogue to get deliver the rhetoric I wished to create. Due to this, I primarily focused on the ethos of my characters and the logos of my work throughout the comic strip. A yonkoma is a four panel comic strip in the style of other conventional Japanese manga and usually consists of gags/jokes. These panels are generally aligned from top to bottom with each panel serving a purpose. That purpose from top to bottom being setting, joke set-up, climax, and then conclusion. In a yonkoma the title is usually above the first panel and does not usually have an author stated directly on the yonkoma; however, if the author is written, it is predominantly below the final panel. In Japanese manga as well as yonkoma, loud and yelling type dialogue, is portrayed using a sharp like speech bubble while any sort of set up/narration is done through square or rectangle shaped boxes. These set-boxes can be seen within the first and last panels of my yonkoma while yelling dialogue bubbles are seen within my first and third panels. You may also notice in the final panel of my yonkoma there is a circular set of straight lines all converging around one point. This type of effect is used to create a sense of urgency, shock, or sudden strong occurrence with in a panel. In standard Japanese fashion for their comics, the dialogue and story is read from right to left instead of the western left to right. To convey my message, I created my yonkoma to portray the pathos to be playful and laid-back in order to not come off as overly serious. If the yonkoma was portrayed more seriously, it would not receive the attention it would otherwise, as it would go against the conventions of a yonkoma and would not fit my audience demographic on Tumblr itself. Since the ethos of the author is not really prevalent when accounting the credibility of a yonkoma, I had to rely on the ethos I established for the characters within it. Within my yonkoma, I created two characters, one relatable girl, and a deviant boy. I portrayed the girl in just a jacket and back while worrying about a test to create a sense of reliability to the normal demographic you would find on Tumblr; especially to my targeted audience. I also made her dialogue bubbles smaller than the boys to establish her shyness/intrinsic nature while the boy’s is larger to show his outgoing and potentially obnoxious personality. They boy is seen without a shirt the entire time with a Mohawk and is constantly attempting to get the girl to drink. While doing this he spouts dialogue that is similar to traditional carpe diem type speech such as “Don’t worry about tomorrow! The Test Can Wait!” This kind of dialogue is similar
In 102 Minutes, Chapter 7, authors Dwyer and Flynn use ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to the readers’ consciences, minds and hearts regarding what happened to the people inside the Twin Towers on 9/11. Of particular interest are the following uses of the three appeals.
Heinrichs had previously worked as a journalist before becoming a full time writer and advocate for rhetoric. He utilizes illustrative examples to convey rhetorical concepts. Furthermore, chapter four reveals the most valuable logos and pathos tactic. Lastly, this book’s use should be continued in this course.
Media such as movies, video games and television, in general, are all created to support some form of social context. This helps with generating popularity because people are able to relate to the form of media. In Greg Smith’s book What Media Classes Really Want to Discuss, he describes 6 different representational strategies that justifies people’s way of thinking. The trope that I will be amplifying is the white savior tactic. In addition, I will connect this strategy to the movie The Blind Side. There are clear examples throughout the film where racism and low-income cultures exist in which the white family is there to help. In my political cartoon, Barack Obama is holding an image of the Pope and the Pope is smiling, there is a blurb from Obama saying "Thought you might like this!".
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
The fight for racial equality is one of the most prominent issues Americans have faced throughout history and even today; as the idea that enslaving individuals is unethical emerged, many great and innovative authors began writing about the issues that enslaved people had to face. Olaudah Equiano was no exception. In his work The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, he attempts to persuade his readers that the American way of slavery is brutal, inhumane, and unscrupulous. Equiano manages to do this by minimizing the apparent differences between himself and his primarily white audience, mentioning the cruelties that he and many other slaves had to face, and the advantages of treating your slaves correctly.
“A Modest Proposal” was written in 1729 by a satirical author by the name of Jonathan Swift. Swift studied at the University of Oxford and was also know for his popular writing in Gulliver’s Travel. The purpose for his satire “A Modest Proposal” was to enlighten the citizens of Ireland about their hardship and suffering. He informed them about their scares of food, money, and property, but provided a possible solution to their problem. To persuade the people Swift adopts a comforting and friendly tone to his audience for the people to react to his solution.
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.

In conclusion, the video Ad Campaign for Physician-Assisted Death by Kelsey Milbourn proved to be a great example of the rhetorical situation. Throughout this video, Milbourn was able to effectively persuade her audience with the use ethos, pathos, and logos. These three forms of persuasion are important in making an argument because they provide the facts while playing with the emotions of an audience. I believe Milbourn did an excellent job of persuading her audience through using theses persuasion techniques.
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). This is a compare and contrast rhetorical analysis paper focusing on a print billboard advertisement and television commercial. The billboard advertisement is centered on a smoking death count, sponsored by several heart research associations. In addition, the television Super Bowl commercial illustrates how irresistible Doritos are, set in an ultrasound room with a couple and their unborn child. The following paragraphs will go in depth to interpret the pathos, logos, and ethos of both the billboard and the television advertisements. Clark (2016) suggests that rhetoric isn’t limited to oral communication, but currently has a permanent foothold in written works: magazine or newspaper excerpts, novels, and scientific reports.
The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
