Film Director
A director is someone who directs the makings of a film. They are the creative forces that drive the team forward, from deciding the film’s artistic and dramatic aspects, to visualizing the script, it is their job to guide the cast and crew to achieve their vision for the particular film, making the film what it is. Directors play a key role in the film making process.
Film Directors have many responsibilities and duties that they will need to fulfil. Directors are responsible for creating and translating the film’s script into actual visual images and sounds. Normal activities that are a part of a director’s job include working with the scriptwriters and developing themes, adapting the script, breaking down and analysing individual

A director will need to have a thorough understanding of the filmmaking process, and have to be very passionate about the field. They might also consider learning and understanding some of the more technical aspects, ones such as editing and cutting. Some subjects and degrees may be relevant and may help in providing some necessary skills. Art and design, music, or any performing arts subject may improve one’s creativity, and ask one to think outside the box. Music would also help someone when choosing different pieces to emphasize certain emotions in one’s film. Studying drama and theatre is quite essential for a director, this will be extremely helpful in creating certain aspects of films, and will give me many tips that may help me, such as ways to build tension. Language literature helps improve analytical and interpretational skills, which are essential for a film director to have. Most of these subjects would have given someone enough understanding in high school, but if they would like to extend their education in these fields, they could consider some colleges and universities. For Performing Arts, one could consider schools such as Julliard, while if one want to specifically go to a film school, the London Academy or MET Film School are both very qualified universities. However, the role of a director mainly comes form …show more content…
I find it amazing and slightly amusing that so many of the characteristics of a film director are ones that I have or value. I have only recently started to think about working in this field, and looking at all of my information and data, I believe that it is a very interesting career path that I could choose for myself. It fits my personality, my values, and my interests, which include art, music, and drama. It is quite surprising that my educational plans are quite similar to ones that could benefit me in this field, which include: Art, Drama, and Language Literature. I have never considered going to film school, but I have always had an interest in filming, so it might be a very viable option in the
In the film industry, there are directors who merely take someone else’s vision and express it in their own way on film, then there are those who take their own visions and use any means necessary to express their visions on film. The latter of these two types of directors are called auteurs. Not only do auteurs write the scripts from elements that they know and love in life, but they direct, produce, and sometimes act in their films as well. Three prime examples of these auteurs are: Kevin Smith, Spike Lee and Alfred Hitchcock.
Adam stated that the director’s main job is to keep the vision and cast on track. Moreover, the director has to understand where the vision is going so that he/she can ensure the cast and crew are on the correct track and maintain their focus. In addition, Adam says that a director must be able to develop relationships between the actors and crew so that they may work as a team. He concludes that a good director “must be somebody that people want to work with,” and a director must be personable. I agree with him; a director must be a shepherd-like figure to the members....
As you probably could have assumed, I love to watch any film I can get my hands on, and my once strong friendships are hanging on by a thread due to hours spent helping on short films of mine. Unlike some applicants, I come from a farming community with no film connection, none of my classmates are interested in pursuing a career like film, my school offers no film courses, and I have no film connection currently. Surely I sound like a poor fit for the Hollywood Reporter’s top film school, you may even wonder why I, without a single connection, would choose this field. Hopeful it may be understood me more through my background.
With many different genres and types of filmmaking, it can result in a large variety of stories and conflicts. Nevertheless, film has always brought people together as a society. If there is one thing everyone can notice about films is the achievement in style and directing. The three directors talked about in this paper are the most successful at delivering a breathtaking style and direction to their films. Baz Luhrmann, Wes Anderson, and Martin Scorsese have produced and directed films over decades and each film as impacted not only the United States but worldwide. With the unmistakable trademarks that each director has, it is very easy to feel sucked into the world in which they are shaping around you and the story. Because of these three directors, the film world and industry has been revolutionized for many centuries to come.
In film however, the production is definitely a directors medium as he or she has total control over what parts of the texts are necessary and what parts are not. The director can lead an audience's attention in film by moving the camera to various angles and from various viewpoints whereas on stage this is limited as the only way in which to catch the audience's attention is by moving the spotlight on to someone at a certain part of the stage but even so they can still look around to other parts of the stage. In films their is a different chronology of events and intercutting is often used. This could be because a director feels that it's necessary to have the audience see what's happening in the other character's lives at the time something crucial is perhaps happening in another character's.
... rather the person they embody and take on as their character in that movie. Casting directors complete a thorough and extensive process in order to find the perfect actors and deliver the best to producers and directors, thus making the best film possible. Unfortunately, they are rarely given credit where credit is due. Although they are given some award opportunity from other organizations, hopefully in the near future the prestiges awards are available too. Casting directors deserve the praise for all the responsibility and pressure put on them that other roles of the movie making process get all time, when will it be their time? In essence, casting directors are pivotal for the industry 's success yet have the most overlooked job in the business, and it 's time for that to change, where they too can give their acceptance speech on stage with thousands watching.
A crew includes a screenwriter, whose job it is to provide the written blueprint version of the entire film. This is basically the starting point for any movie. Next there is the producer. There are many types of producers; executive producers, co-producers, assistant producers and line producers. They all do very different things. Some are the producers are responsible for raising the funds for the movie while others are responsible for the production that goes on during the filming of the movie and still other producers are in charge of what physically goes on the set. Then it is time for the director. The director is in charge of the actors. The director works with the actors to visually bring to life what was written on the screenplay (Fortunato, Who Does What on a Film). Now the idea needs to come together. The idea of writing, “what you know” is not always true and writing, “what you come to know” is in fact a more accurate way to write. Other good ways to formulate ideas are to use existing plays, novels, short stories, life stories, new articles, or even past TV shows and film. When using existing work a person needs to make sure that one secures the copyrights before starting write. Securing the copyrights does not mean one is finished yet. Now a person needs...
The essay investigates how a director should communicate and work with actors during rehearsal and on set to produce engaging performances. The essay investigates different acting styles, the rehearsal process, directing on set and communication between actors and director. The essay assumes the actor has formal training and basic experience. The essay then proves effective communication achievable through the “actor’s vocabulary” is key not to over-direct and building trust with the actor.
So, you want to become a Movie Director? With becoming a Director, especially a Movie Director, comes many advantages and disadvantages. Advantages can be anything from gaining a great amount of salary annually, that you are your own “boss,” or that you get to dream for a living. Some of the disadvantages are that Directors work irregular hours, they have very stressful work, and it requires lots of skill. To start out though, what are Movie Directors duties? They have to select a script or an idea for a movie. As Steven Spielberg says, “It all starts with the script: it's not worth taking myself away from my family if I don't have something I'm really passionate about.” Basically, what he means is if you don’t have a script, you don’t have a movie, therefore, just go home. Some more jobs that they must do is select a casting director to find a cast, to make sure that a project stays on track as far as time and money, and they also tell the actors what they have to do to make the movie better. Well, as they say in Hollywood, “Let’s get this show on the road!” Advantage number 1, is that being a Movie Director can bring in a boat load of cash, if you’re good at it. According to The United States Department of Labor, Directors can get on average, about $68,000 a year. Now you have to remember that that is the minimum. If you’re one of the best Directors in the world, such as Steven Spielberg, then you might get paid upwards $330,000,000 a year. If you think that crazy, then you won’t believe that per second, he makes $47.74, per minute he makes $2,864.58, and per hour he makes $171,875. Now, onto advantage number 2, which is that you would be your own boss. Just think, that while there can be anywhere from 1 to 1,000 other people working on the movie, that you have the all complete power. This can also be bad, because if the movie ends up being a flop, people point fingers at you because you made all the production critiques. Advantage number 3, which is the final advantage, is that you get to dream for a living! Steven Spielberg himself says, “I dream for a living.” The coolest thing, I feel, about being a Movie Director, is that in the end, the movie is your dream and imagination.
In I am The Messenger, Markus Zusak demonstrates how acts of kindness and helping people can not only benefit the recipients but also bring contentment to the deliverer, in this case, our protagonist, Ed Kennedy. Zusak conveys this theme through the fulfillment and purpose Ed gives himself through the delivery of his messages. Two of Ed’s messages are about alleviating negative characteristics: Loneliness and Lack of Purpose. Ed’s first message was delivered to Milla, the lonely old woman who lives on Harrison Avenue.
Before each of these conventions is defined and analysed the process of making a Classical Hollywood film must first be described; it begins with either the completion of a script or the hiring of a scr...
Thomas Crowl’s Shakespeare and Film’s second chapter, “Close up: Major Directors I” features three directors. These three directors are most responsible for the atmosphere of the Anglo-American Shakespeare film. Laurence Oliver (1907-1989,) Orson Welles (1915-1985,) and Kenneth Branagh (b. 1960) each fashioned different methodologies to transfer the text from Shakespeare’s plays to innovative and thought-provoking films.
Filmmaking is an art like no other. It brings people together to create magnificent stories that people can view either on their television or on the big screen. The creators of film could not have imagined how far filmmaking would go and how much it would impact the world of entertainment. The invention of filmmaking has evolved over a long period of time and will continue to impact the world of entertainment.
"The Six Things You Must Know to Make It in the Film Industry." Indiewire. Web. 04 Apr. 2014.
Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
