Resilience
Resilience is the quality that allows people to be knocked down by life and come back even stronger. Rather than letting failure overcome them and drain their resolve, they find a way to rise from the ashes. (Pyschologytoday.com/basics/resilience, n.d.) Resiliency comes from the Latin resalire which means to bounce or jump back (Guillfoyle, 2015). Being resilient does not mean that someone does not experience distress in their life, in fact people who are resilient normally have gone through many emotional trauma in their lives. (Guillfoyle, 2015) The road to resilience often involves learning from past traumatic experiences and trying to work on the way you react to distress. (Braddell, 2015) If a social care worker is not resilient at all this can lead to them being very miserable in their job or even a break down. A social care worker is usually required to be energetic and enthusiastic which can be very draining especially if they are under a lot of stress. book remains a true testimony to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.
Caring for an individual who is facing a life threatening illness is often completed by a multidimensional team, including doctors, nurses, therapists, and caregivers, as well as family members. Social workers are an integral part of this team, since they are usually the healthcare workers that are involved in the evaluation and assessment of patients and their family members’ needs and concerns at the end ...
Social workers deal with intense situations daily. It is important that social workers are aware of how they are affected by these interactions. Priscilla Dass-Brailsford explains in her book, that countertransference, vicarious trauma (VT), secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue and satisfaction, and burnout are all different ways that counselors can be affected (Dass-Brailsford, 2007). This is where it is important for social workers to have a plan of self-care and stress management resources to use.
Weick (1992) states “every person has an inherent power that may be characterized as life force, transformational capacity, life energy, spirituality, regenerative potential, and healing power, which is a potent form of knowledge that can guide personal and social transformation” (p. 24). No matter the crisis or oppression, it needs to be brought to client’s realization that they are strong, resilient and can overcome. They may not be aware of this inner power due to the constant stress and overwhelming sense of impending doom in their lives, but with the help of the strengths perspective, we can assist clients in realizing that they have strengths as well as weaknesses. Clients want to know that they can rely on social workers to provide adequate resources and respect their current situation, no matter how difficult it may be. Clients want to know that we can empathize with their situation and provide support, care and concern for the issues they are going through; they need to know that we will help them achieve their goals and not give up on them as many may have before in their lives. Saleeby (2013) states “your cli...
Social work burnout is an issue for many people; burnout does not just affect the social worker though. If a social work is experiencing burn out then they are less likely going to be able to preform at their best capacities, accordingly the client will suffer from this. Social work burnout is more common than expected. The NASW did a survey and found that roughly 65% of social are experiencing fatigue, 37% are experiencing Psychological problems, and 23% are experiencing sleep disorders. (Arrington, P. 2008) These statistics show that there is an issue with social work burnout. If a social worker is feeling fatigue or did not get enough sleep, their work with their clients will suffer. Nonetheless if a
Social workers must have a certain level of integrity in their field of practice. This characteristic is important because it helps a person be true to their own beliefs and allows them to set their own boundaries. Integrity can show a social worker what types of clients they are comfortable working with and what types of professions they should not be in. Social workers who have integrity are able to put their energy into cases that they are capable of handling and will have less opportunities of harming the client in any way. When a person is able to show integrity, they stay true in what they believe in and work
Ellison, Posada, and Richardson (2015) discuss the importance of self-care in social work as individuals are constantly giving ‘other-care.’ It is the goal to apply ‘other-care’ to the self. The NASW’s focus on self-care has been continual over the years. The NASW defines self-care as “a core essential component to social work practice [reflecting] a choice and commitment to become actively involved in maintain one’s effectiveness (NASW, 2012, p. 268).” One study found that over half of workplace stress is caused by a lack of time and heavy workloads.
...nce of human relationships, integrity and competence (NASWCE). As a social worker, one will have to understand and stand by these principle’s whether it is in a difficult situation or not. The main key is to stand by what is right. For an example in the story “The Seed,” the young boy stood by his plant even though it did not seem right. Sometimes what one think is not going to work will be the main thing that will work as long as they have the courage to keep pushing and working hard at it. As stated, “if you plant hard work, you will reap success (The Seed).”
Resilience is the act of persevering through life threatening challenges to reach a positive outcome. People use resilience in a range of settings such as pushing through conflicts with peers or surviving in the wild alone. No person could survive without being resilient. Being resilient can be achieved through making peace with others, making peace with oneself, making peace with nature, and making peace with society. Resilience is used by humans who make peace in different ways when enduring horrible acts of cruelty.
"Social workers are increasingly being called on to assist survivors of childhood abuse, domestic violence, violent crime, disasters, and war and terrorism," (Bride). Because social workers are being introduced to more stressful situations, they are gaining more responsibilities. Social workers aim to help people who struggle with challenges in their everyday lives. They also protect at risk children and support low income families in need of assistance. Some social workers diagnose and help treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues.
Social work practice has become a vital part of our society. They are found in almost every aspect of our community as well as our schools. Social workers are problem solvers that help people deal with daily issues that may become problems that affect them. As our society becomes more challenging, social workers help bridge the gaps for people who face extraordinary challenges in their lives. The social worker’s scope of practice may contain helping at risk or overwhelmed individuals find resources, develop new coping strategies, resolve problems and conflicts, and secure opportunities to improve their quality of life. (Flynn, 2013) Although the scope of practice is basically the same, there are various types of social workers with various levels of education. It doesn’t matter if you are a medical, clinical, school, military, psychiatric or community social worker, the goal is
Have you ever experienced something extremely tough and difficult to cope with in your life? A situation that made you feel weak and defenseless? These types of situations can range from suffering from an extreme illness, such as cancer, or injury, such as a broken bone, to the death of an important family member to difficulties involving school; all are still valid hardships. I am sure most of us have gone through something similar in our lives. The truth of these situations is that in the end they will make us stronger, tougher and more resilient.
My understanding about the social work profession is one that works with a diverse group of people to better their well-being in all aspects. Social workers requires: responsibility, passion, and knowledge. The social worker has to understand their own personal cultural values, beliefs, and appreciate the multicultural identities of different people. The profession of social worker requires a lot of skills because they have different tasks and responsibilities. They are aware of social policies and programs for the diverse clients advocating.
While this factor demotivates to a great deal, it is also the leading cause of job stressors, which contribute to burnouts and discontent, factors which in turn reduces social workers’ capacity to dispense quality services. In addition, per Browne (2016), with increasing needs among clients approaching social
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
