Snipers have the ability to hit a target from over 1,000 yards away. As said by Robert Valdes, “Snipers are known for their marksmanship, but it is not a skill that comes naturally and requires a deep understanding of bullet ballistics.” (10). Snipers are very well known machines of war, but there is much more to the marksman than point and shoot. A Sniper must be able to hit their target from those ranges on their first try and sharpshooting is a perishable skill meaning they have to train. These marksmen are by far the most powerful troop on the field. Snipers are the most powerful and tactical troops because of the power of their guns, their intense training, and their

Snipers are able to land hits from miles away, out of range and out of sight. For example, “A sniper rifle in the hands of a highly trained sniper can be deadly weapon from a mile away” (Valdes 5). This shows that their weapons are extremely powerful and can easily out shoot most guns. Any gun able to lay a confirmed hit from a mile and be operated by a single man would be. A very popular saying in the military is“ The most effective thing against a sniper is another sniper” (Barisik et.al. N.p.). This statement indicates that the only thing powerful enough is only just as powerful. As any other weapon would presume useless against the marksmen. This shows a sniper has ultimate power. That is why sniper are the most powerful and tactical …show more content…
Although you might not think about this at first it is a massive obstacle to the shooter. Brian explained that,” Isaac Newton realized that friction and gravity change an object velocity (speed and direction)”(7). When a sniper takes a shot he has to think of gravity and any friction with anything in the air, no matter how small. This means a sniper has to take into an account of air pressure, precipitation, temperature, wind, and anything else that might alter the course of the bullet. Even if these sound unreasonable, these types of weather measurements could greatly affect the projection of the bullet and its path to the target. Whether it be a machine or commander. Brian also explained that, “ Newton discovered that mass times acceleration equals force”(9). The sniper has to understand this law of physics. If his bullet does not have enough force it won't even pierce the target, which would then put him in danger. If a sniper couldn't pierce the armor of the target the sniper would then not be able to complete a mission and would might as well be dead. When a sniper understands these laws of physics he is then the most powerful and tactical troop on the

In “The Sniper” the conflict is man vs man, which means main character is tasked with killing his enemy, but it proves to be quite a challenge. Even though there were many challenges the sniper followed through with his job and persevered even after he was shot in the arm. Wanting to kill his enemy, stay alive, and be one step closer to ending the war was his main goals. Being brave, he took off his hat, placed it on his gun, and raised it above the edge of the roof. Instantly the enemy shot at it and the sniper, pretending to be dead, waited until the enemy got up for him to shoot him. He did some quick thinking and, with determination, handled the conflict quite well.

In Liam O'Flaherty's "The Sniper," all of these. are brought to an acute reality in a single war-torn city. Strong cerebral convictions and opposing philosophies, due to which people want to destroy the seemingly “wrong” plague this world and are the ones who are the ones who are the main reason for the plight. To aid in his creation of such emotional conflict, turmoil and plight, the author has portrayed the sniper as a very controversial character in the story. This story is oriented around one character in the Civil War which he should not even be in as he is. mentioned to be a “student” in the story.
Murder is a reprobate action that is an inevitable part of war. It forces humans into immoral acts, which can manifest in the forms such as shooting or close combat. The life of a soldier is ultimately decided from the killer, whether or not he follows through with his actions. In the short stories The Sniper by Liam O'Flaherty and Just Lather, That's All by Hernando Téllez, the killer must decide the fate of their victims under circumstantial constraints. The two story explore the difference between killing at a close proximity compared to killing at a distance, and how they affect the killer's final decision.
As we saw earlier, both authors of both stories were born in different places and did many things. “The Sniper” sets in Dublin, Ireland, during a time of a bitter civil war. It was a war between the Republicans, which wanted Ireland to become ...
middle of paper ... ... These new soldiers would be better shooters against their enemy and would save great amounts of ammunition and money. Contests were held across the country to find these elite sharpshooters. To make the cut you have to put 10 consecutive shots into a target at two hundred yards.
A gun has a high muzzle velocity and a very flat trajectory. Normally a gun is used in a direct fire mode where the target can be seen and penetration is desirable. Good targets for a gun would be things like brick or earth forts, ships, buildings, and targets in tree lines. Howitzers have a somewhat lower muzzle velocity and arc their shells onto a target. They are used in both direct fire and indirect fire mode.
The setting to “The Sniper” plays a vital role in understanding the meaning O’Flaherty was trying to convey. The main character is sitting on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge in Dublin Ireland. During the Irish Civil War, the river that flowed beneath the bridge, was the dividing line in the Battle of Dublin. From the beginning, when civilians watched the opening attacks from atop the bridge, to the end, when it shook from the final bombing that forced the Republicans to surrender, the bridge was a key factor to the end result of the war. Introduction: The Infantry faces many different challenges when it comes to making the training realistic and valuable to keep our infantrymen ready to fight in today’s complex operating environment. The term “train as you fight” is not necessarily true when training in a garrison atmosphere. The doctrine or methods of training used by the conventional infantry are outdated and paralyzed with range limitations and unrealistic guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The infantryman is a master of his assigned weapon system, and the Army needs to do better at preparing our Soldiers for the battlefield. Marksmanship skills are essential for any unit conveyed to a wartime theater. This paper will examine the four significant army marksmanship
... capable of killing in small numbers. Now, however, they are able to destroy whole buildings. Politicians can and do use the power of the gun to force others to do what they want. Guns have become such an effective killing machine that they can kill anyone anywhere at anytime and, to fulfill any political cause.
Contrarily “The Sniper” is one of the stories. In this story, theirs a Republican Sniper, fighting in Civil War knowing it's a life or death matter trying to survive. The Republican Sniper realizes that war is bad and can lead to wrong things. Killing his own brother, eventually finding out that his enemy that he killed was his own family member. Doing what he can in order to survive. A theme in this story “War knows no boundaries- age, sex, location, time of day, family ties”.
The story is representing Mr. O’Flaherty and his brother in the war. Liam O’Flaherty was a great author and created many pieces of work that have become very popular since they were published. In “The Sniper”, it shows readers that war only makes people simple objects, how bad it can affect people and the side effects, and some experiences will be with some people till they die. This short story of the two snipers was the story of what happened to Mr. O’Flaherty, and how he got a mental illness from killing his own brother. In “The Sniper”, it can show some of the true horrors that a war can bring into a person’s
There are many agencies that have the ability to perform Signals Intelligence, electronic reconnaissance and most of all signals intelligence from all available sources inducive to the environment. The United States Army uses the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint STARS) as its main entity for signals collection. The Joint STARS platform was designed to provide a highly effective, real-time, collection tool to the ground task force commanders during battlefield engagements, but for the past ten years, the sensor has been used for peacekeeping missions. Army analysts can predict the enemy’s behavior by identifying choke points, potential avenues of approach and operating patterns such as supply routes and logistical points. The analysis gives the ground commander a more complete view of the enemy’s weaknesses. The United States Air Force employs the Joint STARS in a different mission than the Army. The Air Force uses Joint STARS as a battlefield management tool versus a collection tool as used for by the Army. The Air Force uses the platform to provide immediate and direct support to the Air Component Commander and continue to observe the enemy’s movement from a far distance in the sky. Providing essential data to commanders such as size, direction, and speed of the adversaries, with minimum casualties while under battlefield conditions, makes the Joint STARS an extremely effective tool. The Air Force also employs the Predator vehicles, which are unmanned aerial vehicles that are used for reconnaissance.
