Item Two--Parthenon

The Parthenon was an Athenian temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. The name Parthenon derived from Athena’s epithet: Parthenos, ‘Parthenon’ means ‘house of Parthenos’. Its construction began in 447 BC and completed in 438 BC, with decorations been done in 432 BC, it was built in the age of Pericles while the Athenian Empire reached the peak of its power. According to the History Writer Mark Cartwright, the temple itself was known as the ‘large temple’ as it was the largest Doric Greek temple. The whole architectural style of it has mixed both Doric and the newer Ionic. Its height and width, the width of the inner cella and its length were all constructed using 4:9 ratio. The architectural techniques and styles of the Parthenon heavily influenced the architectures been created later on, such as the neoclassical architecture, the Roman architecture and the beaux-arts architecture. Many modern architectures were designed similar to the Parthenon's style of tapered columns to its material used.
The Second Bank of United States was designed by architect William Strickland and built between 1819--1824, cost half-a-million dollars. It was inspired and modeled by the Parthenon. The structure of this building showed one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the world. According to the description of it being provided by the National Park Service, the Second Bank of the United States was measuring 86' x 140' with 16' x 10' porticoes at the north and south ends, contains 11,954 square feet of interior space. The main or north entrance was approached by a flight of marble stairs to a portico with eight large fluted Doric columns, 4' 6" in diameter, and a full Doric entablature.
