Mass media has evolved in the last century because of technological advances. The advances have created new markets and new ways for the channels of communication to reach its target audience. With the developments of mass media, the American culture has been majorly influenced and changed. However, even with the new mass media advancements, there has not been a complete demolish of the past media connections. Media convergence continues to affect the connection of the media and its distribution. Media convergence has to do with “the technological merging of content across different media channels,” but it also “describes a business model that involves consolidating

The development of the internet allowed for people across the globe to connect immediately and provide an almost instant access to information. The internet has changed American culture significantly without eliminating other avenues of mass media. American culture has changed to expect quicker results. Before the internet finding out information could require research and time to locate an answer. Now a simple search can provide answers or opinions to any subject. After the internet creation, it resulted in the development of social media. The draw to social media and the internet caused networks to change their methods of promotion and engagement with the audiences. While networks still have multiple channels and radio stations, they needed to ensure that they were current and an important aspect in today’s society. Now tv shows will use social media to connect in ways that were never thought of before. Multiple tv shows do live chats during the original broadcast. For example, The Walking Dead has a twitter page that provides a whole network of people who are watching the show to chat about what is going on in the show. And at special times you can chat with the cast during the show. Another effect of the internet is the ability to create multiple gatekeepers. A person can create a blog with relative ease and provide their own insights into issues. This can create more information that is available to the everyone. However, this also leads to major issues with media literacy. Media literacy includes access or description, analysis, and interpretation of the information. However, with quicker access and demand for information, incorrect details can be released and can result in a lack of media literacy. A person is bombarded with different opinions, details, and stated facts that will contradict itself. A person needs
When discussing the media, we must search back to its primal state the News Paper. For it was the News paper and its writers that forged ahead and allowed freedoms for today’s journalism on all fronts, from the Twitter accounts to the daily gazettes all must mark a single event in the evolution of media in respects to politics and all things shaping. Moving on in media history, we began to see a rapid expansion around 1990. With more than 50% of all American homes having cable TV access, newspapers in every city and town with major newspaper centers reaching far more than ever before. Then the introduction of the Internet; nothing would ever be the same.
The internet is truly a modern marvel that contains all known information instantly at ones’ fingertips effortlessly. With the rise of the internet American thought has shifted to the point where people assume that all information presented is true. This has led to media outlets posting what their specific audience will read and believe for profit which is also a problem Postman associated with modern television. Ushering in a new age, where the accuracy of information is skewed so it gets attention and goes viral before anyone even checks the facts behind the statement. Television, the internet, and the era of mass media is a devolution of discourse and technology and needs to be reversed by remembering that man invented television and that we need to control it and not let it control
Throughout the years, media has advanced along with technology. They now range in sizes, small to large, and weight, heavy and light. The means of communication we have used evolved from newspapers to televisions, social media, and the list goes on. They aid people in keeping us connected and keeping them informed of new products and of the environment. Media is an important part of the lives of neighbors, friends, family members, and the rest of the world. It is how they all stay connected. significant why it matters Why: mold the children molds the world. Affects how they act, feel, act towards others, and how they react to different events in their lives.
The media play an indispensable role in modern life, and are considered amongst the most powerful and inaccurate sources of social information, education and entertainment. Our mass media is an electronic (TV, film, video, videogames, internet) visually dominated media with print (newspaper, magazine)...
“American Media History is the story of a nation. It is the story of events in the long battle to disseminate information, entertainment, and opinion in society. It is the story of the men and women whose inventions, ideas, and struggles helped shape the nation and its media system.”(Fellow) The evolution of media has influenced countless societal and cultural changes leading to the present day. But it didn’t get this far over night. It is estimated to have begun more than 30,000 years ago through the process of cave painting. (Crewe) Following cave painting, came the invention of books being printed on blocks “The Diamond Sutra”, the Gutenberg printing press, newspapers in 1640, photographs, the radio in 1894, television, and recently computers; which lead all the way to modern day social media. Through the hard work of multiple inventors the media was able to reach where it is today. It has changed the way people communicate with each other, mostly for the better.“ The way people experience the meaning, how they perceive the world and communicate with each other, and how they distinguish the past and identify the future.” (Gitelman) Or as we know it as: a new way of communicating information from person to person.
For years, the population has been exposed to different forms of media. Newspapers, magazines, television, films, radio, and more recently the Internet are ways of promoting ideas, spreading news, and advertising products.
The Mass Media is a unique feature of modern society; its development has accompanied an increase in the magnitude and complexity of societal actions and engagements, rapid social change, technological innovation, rising personal income and standard of living and the decline of some traditional forms of control and authority.
Electronic media is all around. Society absorbs media like sponges and uses it like it is literally a part of us; sometimes it would appear as if we are addicted to using it. Cellphones, televisions, online education etc. has an influence so powerful in our lives that we don’t even recognize its presence at times. Media is one of the variants in molding culture. Society can use this media to its advantage if we pay closer attention to its impact on us. There are diversified Pros and Cons to Electronic Media. Pros include accessibility, sharing your opinion with the public on social websites, and instant updates on news. Cons include news stories being blown out of
The mass media operate other important societal functions as well. Harold Lasswell, political scientist and communication theorist, illustrates three features: surveil¬lance of the world to report ongoing events, interpretation of the meaning of events, and socialization of individuals into their cultural settings (Lasswell 1969). The other fourth function must be added: manipulation of politics. The way that these four functions operate, influences the political destiny of individuals, groups, and social institutions, as well as the course of internal and international politics.
The definition of mass media is “a means of communication that reaches large numbers of people in a short time, this can consist of the use of television, newspapers, magazine, and radio”, and within the last decade the internet as well. (HarperCollins) The media can actually be a minor or major effect on individuals depending on how or what their view is on the particular subject or matter. The effects it plays on individuals and societies will depend on the exposure to the subject matter at the time, but it effects all ages from young to old.
What is media in contemporary America? Media is the essential source of information about what is going on in America and the world. The media is where the vast majority of the people receive their information and news. The manipulation of the media can promote the death of freedom in modern America. The media is a great tool for information, but people should not give nearly all of their faith towards what is being portrayed onto them. The media evolved from an information channel to an entertainment source. Small children are becoming worse due to the influence of the media. When children start to become rowdy and energetic, parents begin to get drained or exhausted. These parents start using television and devices that capture their child’s
Thirty years ago, if I told you that the primary means of communicating and disseminating information would be a series of interconnected computer networks you would of thought I was watching Star Trek or reading a science fiction novel. In 2010, the future of mass media is upon us today; the Internet. The Internet is and will only grow in the future as the primary means of delivering news, information and entertainment to the vast majority of Americans. Mass media as we know it today will take new shape and form in the next few years with the convergence and migration of three legacy mediums (Television, Radio, Newspaper) into one that is based on the Internet and will replace these mediums forever changing the face of journalism, media and politics. In this paper I will attempt to explain the transition of print media to one of the internet, how the shift to an internet based media environment will impact journalism and mass media, and how this migration will benefit society and forever change the dynamic of news and politics.
The Mass Media has had a greater in influence on modern culture than either education or history.

Media is such an influential part of our society that we forget that not all media is created equally. Media has become so widespread that we might be oblivious to the messages right in front of our faces. Media such as television, newspaper, radio, Internet, social media, and billboards have created an information epidemic that has the ability to influence a person’s thoughts and ideas. Media literacy is a tool that allows people to take information and evaluate it so they can form their own thoughts and ideas about the information presented to them.
