Propaganda is a powerful weapon during times of war. Smear tactics are used to dehumanize and create hatred toward a supposed enemy, either foreign or domestic, by creating a false image in the mind of the public. This can be done by using derogatory or racist terms, avoiding some ideas or by making accusations of enemy attacks. The immersive nature of some games makes them a powerful form of communication and vehicle for propaganda. The fact that a majority of people still does not take video games seriously only increases the effectiveness of the propaganda within. If the public is not looking out for propaganda they will be more susceptible to its power. The belief that people are not stupid enough to be effected by video game propaganda is the exact kind of mindset that will lead to many being affected. Those who think nothing of it may allow their children to play a game that conveys certain views and, especially if the individual had had no thought on the subject before; those views may become the player 's views. Game such as Call of Duty and Battlefield put the player in the shoes of members of United States Military fighting against foreign enemies. This creates the image that the people from the countries portrayed in the games are violent, evil, and deceptive. The stories that are created for the games revolve around nuclear weapons, tragic war events, and shooting the bad guys.
