Reality Portrayed in Film Blood Diamond is an amazing movie that everyone should see. The plot for Blood Diamond is a very entertaining and exceedingly suspenseful. The movie Blood Diamond is a 2006 American-German political war adventure film co-produced and directed by Edward Zwick, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou. The movie takes you through the story of Danny Archer- an ex mercenary from Zimbabwe now a diamond smuggler and Soloman Vandy, a Mende fisherman living with his family in a small village in Sierra Leone, Africa. Throughout the movie we watch as Soloman Vandy is kidnapped by the rebel forces and forced to work in the diamond mines. Together the men take a journey to recover the diamond as well as save Vandys family from the war and chaos in the country. The entire plot portrays the struggle they had to endure from the Sierra Leone Civil War from 1996-2001. Blood Diamond was nominated for 5 awards in the 79th academy awards, Djimon Hounsou won three national awards for his role as Soloman Vandy, including Best Supporting Actor. An important reason that everybody should watch Blood Diamond is the awareness this movie brings to conflict diamonds. Blood diamond is a term used for a diamond mined in a war zone and sold to finance a rebellion, an invading army's war efforts, or a warlord's activity; also known as conflict diamonds. Although it may seem like a miniscule problem in today's society, two thirds of blood diamond sales are made in the United States. To me that shows two things, as Americans we are very superficial and materialistic but not only that, we also keep a blind eye to reality in third world countries if it will benefit us.
