How important is the reputation of a business?
Article published in NewStatesman by Ian Leslie, titled ‘’The reputation game: how to control the way we appear in the eyes of others,’’ states that; ‘’this is your reputation, it is you, because it derives from your actions, and also not you, because it is composed of other people’s opinions and it is a portrait of you that you didn’t commission and don’t own’’ (Leslie, 2018). Put in a different form, character is what you are doing; reputation is the confidence others have in you. One is objective, the other is subjective. The character of someone is completely different from his or her name, and this is true about brands similarly (Reputation,

The image and reputation of any company should take precedence over and above its most high-profile chief exec, even though the reputation is complementary depending on who is doing what about the reputation (Bracey, 2012). While the reputation of the CEOs will always affect that of the business, it is not dependent on the name of the CEO. Yes, the company though isn’t dependent of the CEO, the CEO will add value in times of boom and the confidence bestowed on the company or brand will always be relied upon when things becomes difficult.
However, in recent years we've seen a variety of very successful business start-ups that are as a result of the reputation of the CEO. I am talking about “celebrity CEOs” here. When the success of such a business is basically attributed to the robust name of the CEOs, it is usually said to be in equilibrium with that of the company (Alva Group,

It can make or mar you or your organization without giving any notice, because it is a very important marketing strategy. It earns you customer buy referral from others who know much about you and your firm. ‘’A good reputation inspires others, because we all need positive role models, even the best and brightest among us’’ (Lickerman, 2010).
However, sometimes, a good reputation can quickly turn negative, just like in the case of today’s Uber, which is totally different from the Uber that took us by storm a few years ago by reshaping the taxi industry. Based on the above, I would ‘’want to be insured by a company that is willing to allow the benefit of any doubt’’ ( DF Unit 7
Having a reputation is unavoidable. People will always make subconscious judgments of you which will affect their opinion even if there is no base behind it. However, letting it conform your personal identity and conscience is something that any individual can do. Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a perfect example of this idea. Boo was assigned his father’s reputation by society; cruel and cold. However, even in the solidarity of his home, he chose to define himself as he pleased and refused to let the reputation handcuff him into being someone that he’s not. A similar situation has happened to myself, with the reputation of being a nerd likewise being chained to me. However, I could consciously refuse to allow that to define who I believe I am. This leads me to believe that even though any individual may have a distinct reputation forced upon them, they always have the
Do you have a reputation? Is it a good idea? Bad? Not a bad idea. How has your reputation influenced your life?
Our reputations are beliefs and opinions that are held by our friends, family and even complete strangers about bout us. Someone’s reputation determines how they will be seen before even meeting them, almost like a first impression. Which is why your reputation is something you need to handle with care and protect, however some will go to extremes in doing this for instance the play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller. It is a look into what it was like back in the 1800’s during the Salem witch trails. During this play Miller makes the strong argument of the importance of reputation and the countless ways people will protect it. In the play this occurs with many of the characters some more than others yet it’s of importance to everyone in some way or another. The protection of one’s reputation also occurs outside of the play, an example of this would be in politics and sports. In the play The Crucible, Author Miller makes the argument that reputation is incredibly important and people will go to great lengths such as betrayal and lying to protect it, quite often ones morality will become altered when protecting their reputation.
A reputation is not just decided in someones deeds and actions, but what people say of that person. Someones reputation is a powerful thing, especially hearing it from another person. When hearing an opinion of a person it may be true, but also false. In Much Ado About Nothing, the people of Messina find much importance in a person’s reputation. Don John, Claudio, Dogberry, Benedick, Leonato, and Hero are all involved in the opinion of others and their own reputations. William Shakespeare said “reputation is an idle and most false imposition; oft got without merit, and lost without deserving”.
Reputation arises from the expectations that people around us have. Oftentimes, we are vulnerable to our own reputation because we either strive to embody the person that other’s think we are or we strive to prove we are more than what other’s think we are. Individuals are susceptible to the opinions of others and will direct their pursuit of goals towards proving themselves. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini suggests that when an individual’s pursuit of goals is preceded by the expectations of others, they will attain feelings of vulnerability because they fear that their reputation may become accurate. Moreover, the individual will aspire to become more than their given reputation causing them to direct their goals towards furthering the
As far back as the Old Testament, the topic of reputation has been, and continues to be, weaved into story lines. The protagonist in a story is quickly identified through the author’s characterization as being a “good guy” or a “bad guy.” The technique used by the writer can be either direct, using the narrator, another character, or the main character themselves, or it can be deduced by the audience through observing the characters actions, manner of speech, interaction with others, and appearance. Once established, the storyline observes the ability of the protagonist to maintain, destroy, or enhance their reputation. The great play writer William Shakespeare demonstrates the difficulties the characters in his plays experience in maintaining a good reputation, greatly due to the outside influences of others. An examination of the impact influence, through the wording of William Shakespeare and from a historical perspective, can have on ones repute, as shown through Shakespearean character Mark Antony from Antony and Cleopatra, will illustrate that a good reputation, while difficult to obtain, is even harder to maintain when left on its own accord.
The article talks about how valuable a name can be. Whether it is the name of a person or a company, a name can bring about monetary value to someone. “Like any asset, a good name can be bought or sold.” (Clarion-Ledger) The article uses examples such as the names of companies and goods, and relates them to a value that society has placed on them. “If you have a good thing, it will draw a crowd.” (Clarion-Ledger) It is the crowd that will respond to the name and spend money in that direction due to name familiarity.
their own issues instead of the CEO doing all of the talking so to speak. If you haven’t notice in the last few years CEO’s have not done a great job of keeping their companies together such as the Enron scandal. Therefore, companies can pick the best individuals in the workforce and tie them together in certain job styles and let them become as one an lead themselves to success.
My conclusion is that he is a very effective leader. If I were to become a successful CEO, I would follow his example.
In both Othello by Shakespeare and A Dolls House by Ibsen, reputation is valued more then anything else. The characters need a good reputation in order to secure social status. They also fear that they will be seen in a negative image without a good reputation and they use reputation to appear as something that they are not. In both plays, reputation does not reflect one’s true self.
A good reputation is needed in order to be with respect in a society. Those who have maintained a good reputation in society are given respect, but those who have not maintained a good reputation face more challenges in their life.

It is not possible for one to become a celebrity without having characteristics that people will look up to. It is not possible for one to become a successful entrepreneur without being a leader. Which is why this woman’s leadership style is just as significant as her wealth. There is a number of very distinct traits in Oprah’s leadership style. Firstly, she is a very expressive and vocal person. She doesn’t put away her feelings and she doesn’t hide facts or realities of her life. This woman is transparent, speaks about her beliefs on everything as well as realities that can be hard to discuss or share. and speaks her mind. Her bluntness and openness is what gets her so close to individuals. Oprah isn’t just the head of the people in her company, she also leads the people that watch her shows, read her publications and connect with her in more ways than one across the
The main concept I took from chapter 13 is be professional a graduate students main goal should focus on building a brand or reputation as a professional student. Students should surround themselves around other students that have professional reputations or have the same goals and objectives as them. Being a graduate student should be treated as a job, so avoid negativity, gossip, and inappropriate conduct. Peters warns the reader the damages that can be caused by students who participate in gossiping and the effects it can have on your reputation as a student. Displaying a positive attitude or what Peters describes a cheerful disposition will make you appear professional when interacting with both professors and other students. It’s okay
Becoming a CEO of a company whether it’s big or small, is a huge task to take on, but can be the most rewarding depending on how your company does. Either way when going into such a job, in which you are so powerful, you have to think of each and every challenge that you come across within your job. Challenges that your company will face can vary in many different ways, from environmental issues, to social issues, economic issues, as well as many more
