Representation of the Future in Various Films
One of the most important factors or conventions of science fiction
films is that it is always set in a dystopian future, which means the
worst possible future. In the films there is lots of technology and
gadgets, the film look technological because of the grey/silver
filters which give it this look.
Science fiction is usually about fears held in society at the time the
film is released, for example minority report tells us about fears of
violent crime, murder being the most important shown in the film, as
well as drugs.
Science films are popular because they have a lot of technology and
gadgets in that appeal to young people, but also science fiction can
appeal to people in their 20’s and 30’s because they are more
concerned and aware of fears in society.
In metropolis Fritz Lang portrays how he thinks the future would be,
which is that the city is divided into two, upper city for the rich
and lower city for the poor. Upper city is set above ground and lower
city is set underground.
In upper city the buildings are closely packed and very tall, the low
angle shots make them look this big. There is lots of technology for
example planes, cars and trains all to help the rich people, lighting
in upper city is very light and there is gardens that can be used by
them. The characters in upper city wear very thick white make-up to
show they are rich their actions are exaggerated and they wear white

police. When john anderton is operating the computer the same non
diagetic classical music is played and at the beginning of the film
there is modern dance/hip hop music over images of the pre-cogs after
that there is no music when there is pictures before the family is
murdered, the effect of this is tension building.
The main fear shown in minority report is the fear of violent crime
and systems failing. The most important fear of violent crime shown in
the film is murder.
Both films have portrayed the future to be different. In metropolis
the people are divided into rich and poor and live in separate
places. In minority report the film is divided into the police (who
have control over everyone) and the rest of the people.
These days more and more audience like to see their beloved actors and actresses portray superhero or heroine figure in spandex suit blasting laser beam from their eyes, turn into fire then fly away to outer space, or even a scientist who turn into a huge, green, car-throwing, head-smashing monster with indestructible pants when he transforms. But not small amount audience like films with classical-antiquity geographical and timeline set such as Ben-Hur, 300, Spartacus, etc. Antiquity and modernity always be an important part in filmmaking, whether in its screenplay, set design or character design. In some movies these aspect can be shown separately or combined in sort of a new way in filmmaking.

Standing Out in a Crowd: The Aesthetic of Modernist Cinema 2 Among the large objects, such as vast plains or panoramas of any kind, one deserves special attention: the masses. No doubt imperial Rome already teemed with them. But masses of people in the modern sense entered the historical scene only in the wake of the industrial revolution. Then they became a social force of first magnitude. Warring nations resorted to levies on an unheard-of scale and identifiable groups yielded to the anonymous multitude which filled the big cities in the form of amorphous crowds.
With this short but very interesting and informative class I have just scratched the surface of the what it takes to make a full fleged film. It takes much more than I had presumed to make a movie in Hollywood. The number of people that it takes to make a minute of a movie let alone the entire movie was astonishing to me. There are many things that it takes to start making a movie but without an idea of some sort there is no movie to be made.
The story Divergent takes place in a future version of Chicago. In this futuristic city there are five distinct factions. Each faction has a different characteristic by which they follow. They all have a different opinion on which is best, but, the Dauntless believe bravery is the best, the Erudite think knowledge is the key to success, Abnegation is a bit out there and believes being pro-self-sacrifice is the way to go, the Amity loves friendship, and the Candor are the realists of this crazy place. The main character of this story is Beatrice Prior, she grew up in an abnegation family, but when she turned 16 she decided to join the Dauntless. She made this choice, because, she thought they were “cool” they have tattoos, piercings, and leather jackets. Beatrice also didn’t really fit in with the Abnegation, she was Divergent.
Filmmaking, the art of the motion picture, is a comparatively new art form that combines a moving image in conjunction with sound, primarily to tell a story. Due to the medium of capturing the image is evolving, so is the art in its entirety. Modern technology is allowing a more cheaper, streamlined form of production, thus rendering older methods unnecessary. Celluloid filmmaking is the old method of capturing film on a negative film strip and developing it later in its most natural state, whereas digital film is capturing synthetic and manipulatable pixels on a computer-like device. Digital filmmaking should be a primary film medium but not completely eradicate the dying celluloid film culture.
It is natural for films based on novels to different in formats, such as the setting. Scotts films imagery differs greatly from Dicks vision in the novel although they have the same story plot. Even though Scott left out and changed most of the settings in the film, he still provided Dicks vision of a futuristic mix of old and new technology.

A single theme of “what might have happened” runs throughout each of the inclusions, each inclusion being devoted to a particular Hollywood movie. Thus, the text as a whole is united by means of this common thread, but the thread is thin and stretched tightly, resulting in each inclusion having the ability to stand alone as a complete and independent work, related to the others, yet individual. The complete collection may be examined as a work, or conversely, each individual “story” may be considered a finished work to be studied.
The postmodern cinema emerged in the 80s and 90s as a powerfully creative force in Hollywood film-making, helping to form the historic convergence of technology, media culture and consumerism. Departing from the modernist cultural tradition grounded in the faith in historical progress, the norms of industrial society and the Enlightenment, the postmodern film is defined by its disjointed narratives, images of chaos, random violence, a dark view of the human state, death of the hero and the emphasis on technique over content. The postmodernist film accomplishes that by acquiring forms and styles from the traditional methods and mixing them together or decorating them. Thus, the postmodern film challenges the “modern” and the modernist cinema along with its inclinations. It also attempts to transform the mainstream conventions of characterization, narrative and suppresses the audience suspension of disbelief. The postmodern cinema often rejects modernist conventions by manipulating and maneuvering with conventions such as space, time and story-telling. Furthermore, it rejects the traditional “grand-narratives” and totalizing forms such as war, history, love and utopian visions of reality. Instead, it is heavily aimed to create constructed fictions and subjective idealisms.
In today’s society there is a high fear of crime by society. Society actions show that there is anxiety and fear about crime. Therefore, anxiety and fear about crime has placid our cities and communities. Society express fear of being victimized by crimes, criminal activities, and behaviors. Therefore, according to, (Crime, 1999) states that “ the level of fear that a person holds depends on many factors, including but, not limited to: “ gender, age, any past experiences with crime that a person may have, where one lives, and one’s ethnicity.” All of those factors have a huge impact on one’s fear level.
In this paper I will argue that there is a significant difference in the way time travel to the future is possible as compared to time travel from the past is possible. While there are many similarities especially in the physical act of potential time travel, the logical aspect of time travel can cause a plethora of problems.
