There are many factors that can influence a person’s reading and writing. For most people, it can be an author’s work. Some may reference the text that was most significant for them in order to base their own work on it. When I work on my writing, I think of a particular poem that stands out for me. The poem Repetition by Phil Kaye reminds me of what I aim to avoid in my style of writing. At a first glance, Repetition is a poem about a person explaining why repeating the same word over and over again will eventually cause the word to lose its original meaning. But taking a closer look at how he structures his poem reveals that it is more than just a poem about repeating words. Kaye begins to tell a story from when he was seven years old.
Most of the time repetition is used to add emphasis, however, the kind of repetition seen in One Fish, Two Fish is mostly for drama or entertainment. Dr. Seuss writes, "One fish / Two fish / Red fish / Blue fish. / Black fish / Blue fish / Old fish / New fish" (Seuss). As you can see, fish is the repetitive word here and it appears on the end of every line. This is known as epistrophe. (Jobe and Stevens). Isocolon is another form of repetition found in this book. Isocolon can be described as, "repetition of the same grammatical structure in two or more phrases or clauses" (Jobe and Stevens). A prime example of isocolon as seen in One Fish, Two Fish is, "This one has a little star / This one has a little car" (Seuss). Almost the whole line is repeated except for the last word which makes these two lines

“Watch your tone young lady” a phrase known all too well to the American culture, whether it be from mom giving her children a lecture or on a television screen being spoken out by an actor. The tone of voice that one uses while speaking plays an extremely significant role in what the spoken words actually mean. Many times one can say one thing and mean another just from placing emphasis on a particular word. With tone of voice plays such a vital role in the meaning of a sentence it becomes clear that poetry, although often times found in books as written work, is meant to be read aloud; this was not all that clear to me until I attended my very first poetry reading. On November 10th Ramapo College welcomed the marvelous poet Mark Doty to its campus. Through Mark Doty’s reading of “House of Beauty” and “Theory of Marriage” it became clear that the use of emphasis and tone are vital characteristics that allows for the poet to challenge poetic traditions and conventions.
My way of reading has drastically change over the years being part of the writing arts program. My writing is better because my way of reading has also improve because they are so linked to each one gets affected by the other. Due to that I read other’s people writing my writing gets influenced by them because I easily takes note on their structure, tone, format and style. Being able to see how other’s write has inspired me to being open to the different styles of writing there

Many people think that reading more can help them to think and develop before writing something. Others might think that they don’t need to read and or write that it can really help them to brainstorm things a lot quicker and to develop their own ideas immediately (right away). The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.

Although the greater picture is that reading is fundamental, the two authors have a few different messages that they seek to communicate to their audiences. “The Joy of Reading and Writing” depicts how reading serves as a mechanism to escape the preconceived notions that constrain several groups of people from establishing themselves and achieving success in their lifetimes. “Reading to Write,” on the other hand, offers a valuable advice to aspiring writers. The author suggests that one has to read, read, and read before he or she can become a writer. Moreover, he holds an interesting opinion concerning mediocre writing. He says, “Every book you pick has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones” (p.221). Although these two essays differ in their contents and messages, the authors use the same rhetorical mode to write their essays. Both are process analyses, meaning that they develop their main argument and provide justification for it step by step. By employing this technique, the two authors create essays that are thoughtful, well supported, and easy to understand. In addition, Alexie and King both add a little personal touch to their writings as they include personal anecdotes. This has the effect of providing support for their arguments. Although the two essays have fairly different messages, the authors make use of anecdotes and structure their writing in a somewhat similar
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like “ Theme for English B” and “Let American be American Again.”
When a writer starts his work, most often than not, they think of ways they can catch their reader’s attention, but more importantly, how to awake emotions within them. They want to stand out from the rest and to do so, they must swim against the social trend that marks a specific society. That will make them significant; the way they write, how they make a reader feel, the specific way they write, and the devotion they have for their work. Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgard Allan Poe influenced significantly the American literary canon with their styles, themes, and forms, making them three important writers in America.
For this assignment I elected to read a collection of works by a poet I have grown to become more and more familiar with, the ever so syntactically brilliant Carl Phillips and his collection of poems titled Double Shadow. As a poet, I have been influenced a fair amount by Carl since attending his reading a month ago on October 21st. So when it came to reading a collection of works, I chose to read one the books of poetry I bought from that same reading. With regards to Carl and his literary style, Carl has mastered something that I am striving to reach, not just in poetry, but as an artist and human in general. Among the five authors that I have chosen they all relate themselves to the material that they write. The authors that I have chosen are, the poets, Robert Frost and Robinson Jeffers, the prose writers, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman and Willa Cather, and the dramatist, Eugene O’Neil. In all of their writings they have an autobiographical nature that tells the reader about the authors own life. Without the aspects of these authors’ lives their writing could differ.
When reading or listening to poetry, the main objective for me is to feel moved. Happiness, longing, sadness are some of the feelings that can be achieved just by listening to others’ words. It is within these words that creates another world, or separates us from our own. Words all have a certain kind of attachment to them, so if used properly an author can stimulate a reader beyond belief.
'Anxiety of Influence' by Harold Bloom is the book in which the author presents the idea of poetic influence as an imperative in creating a poem. Poets stick to settled methods of writing, which appeared in the literary works of their predecessors. In another words, poets are rarely revolutionary when it comes to bringing new ideas of writing to literature and introducing new themes in their poems. What inspired a poet more than reading one great piece belonging to a literary canon? Writers don't want to be forgotten, which is possible only if their literary work is accepted by the reader. That is why authors have to establish the communication with reader, the easiest and the most effective way for which is to write in a way which readers are used to. The reader response theory deals with reader's 'horizon of expectations', which is filled up when reader's accepting a particular piece of literature. That means the author's intention to reach it was successful. “According to Jauss, the reader approaches a text armed with the knowledge and experience gained from interactions with other texts. These earlier texts arouse familiarity for the reader based on expectations and rules of genre and style.”
Literature is rarely, if ever, merely a story that the author is trying to tell. It is imperative that the reader digs deep within the story to accurately analyze and understand the message the author is trying to portray. Authors tend to hide themselves in their stories. The reader can learn about the author through literary elements such as symbolism, diction, and structure. A good example of this is Robert Frost’s poems The Road Not Taken and Nothing Gold can Stay in which he uses ordinary language unlike many other poets that became more experimental (Frost, Robert. “1.”).
