The Renaissance was a significant, culture movement that began in Italy during the early 1300’s. During the Middle Ages the branch of learning that was most important was theology which means the study of God. Some Renaissance religious leaders had the belief that corrupt cities could be redeemed if their citizens sincerely practiced Christianity. (Hankins Web) During this time of the English Renaissance: Roman Catholicism, Puritanism, and Anglicanism were popular religions that played a major role during this period. The Roman Catholic Church is the largest body of Christians in the world. Catholics are concentrated more heavily in North America, Europe and South America than any other place. The traces of the beginning of the Catholic Church began about A.D. 30; this is the time when Jesus Christ was mandating his apostles to spread the teachings about the Kingdom of God. (Gills Web). Catholics have the belief that Christ inaugurated the church to carry to his people the salvation that he had brought to the world. They also believe that with the aid of God they have managed to preserve his teachings. Belief in God’s revelation is religious faith. Some beliefs that the Roman Catholic’s acquire are the Trinity and creation, Sin, the Incarnation, and salvation, Life after death, Worship and Baptism, Confirmation, and Mass. (Gills Web). Trinity and creation is where Catholics presume there is only one God. This one God exists of a unit of three persons – The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three persons form the Holy Trinity. (Gills Web) Although this is true there is still only one God. This God has no beginning and end, is beyond time and space, and also is faultless and unchanging. They are not a complete system of doctrine but there are clear differences from Roman Catholicism and Anabaptism which indicates an agreement with Reformed and Lutheran positions. The queen added in a statement in Article 20 that “The Church hath power to decree Rites and Ceremonies.” (Shepherd Web) The settlement of Elizabeth still remains the foundation of Anglicanism. Anglicanism has never had a dominant theologian. Theology for Anglicans tend to be biblical, apologetic, and pastoral rather than confessional or opinionated. (Anglicanism Web) Anglicanism is bonded by the liturgy that is common, contained in various recessions of The Book of Common Prayer. Prayer book is prescribed in all Anglican churches.
