In order to maintain a healthy relationship there is many main components such as: commination, trust and mutual respect. In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare there are many examples of: lack of commination, lack of mutual respect and absence of trust. Although, the adult figures in Juliet’s life try to guide her through life, they instead become negative role models and are the biggest contributors to her death.
Firstly, communication is vital for a healthy relationship. Without communication, relationships tend to fall apart and become toxic. Juliet and her family members have very poor communication between each other. The most toxic relationship in the Capulet household is the relationship between Juliet and her father, Capulet. From the beginning of the play, Capulet is contently trying to marry off

Juliet to Paris, even though she is already married to Romeo.
Juliet dislikes this idea, but does not communicate to her father why. So, Capulet amused that Juliet is just being a suborned, thirteen year old girl and he decides to arrange the marriage without Juliet’s approval. Capulet later barges in Juliet room yelling that “But fettle your fine joints ’gainst Thursday next, to go with Paris to Saint Peter’s church, or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither” (Act III, Scene V, 154-156). This caused Juliet to go behind her parents back and go to Friar Laurence to find a way out of her marriage arrangements. The whole issue could have been avoided if Juliet and Capulet communicated better. Also, there is a major miscommunication disaster between Juliet and Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence wrote a letter to Romeo, who has been banished to Mantua. Friar Laurence tells Friar John that “The letter was not nice but full of charge of dear import, and the neglecting it may do much danger” (Act V, Scene II, 18-19). But, Friar Laurence’s letter was never delivered to Romeo. It was essential for Romeo to have received the letter because it was the only way he could learn about Friar Laurence’s plan to fake
Juliet’s death. Friar Laurence could have delivered the letter himself or found some other way to get the essential communication to Romeo. Instead, he gave the letter the Friar John to be delivered on foot. Friar John ends up not being able to get the letter to Romeo and Romeo does not know that Juliet is under a potion that makes her look dead. Since the letter was not delivered, this lead to the tragic deaths of both Romeo and Juliet.
When you walk down the street you notice millions of different kinds of people. Some with a piercing, some with bunch of friends and some with a book in their hands. What is it that makes people so different from one another? Our personality and our character are not born with us, but they are influenced by our actions and the people around us. When we are young we are around our family and they teach us their tradition, which becomes the building blocks for our personality. However, where do traditions come from and what happens when someone fails to follow the traditions? Questions like these have no definite answers but different point of views. Shakespeare for example shares his point of view about traditions in his two famous plays “Romeo and Juliet” and “Much Ado about Nothing.”
In my life I’ve seen many different healthy relationships. The most healthy relationship that I see everyday is Jayden Mink and Lauren Devries. They have been together for almost five years. That is a very long time and I haven’t seen any relationship last that long. They are both good at sports, they both work on a ranch, and they’re both really smart.
The house of the Capulets invites loyalty among the people but also hot tempers. Through the inability to understand Juliet and put aside their anger they may have been the cause for the events that transpired during the story. Lord Capulet, patriarch of the Capulets, is a man that demands respect and has quite the temper. When his character is introduced he is a reasonable father, taking Juliet’s age into consideration the first time he is approached by Paris about marriage. He allows Romeo to take part of his party after Tybalt discovers him. This seems to take a complete 180 later on when Juliet disobeys her father, after her cousin’s death, he threatens to hurt her. “I tell thee what: get thee to church o' Thursday, or never after look me in the face. Speak not. Reply not. Do not answer me. My fingers itch.” Act 3, scene 5,
“Don’t waste your love on someone who doesn’t value it.” In the play Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare exposes the life of two young lovers in the Renaissance period fighting for something they cannot live without; each other. Although fate takes its toll, the everlasting feud between two families, conditional love by parents, and the irresponsibility’s of father and mother like figure are the main causes in the death of Romeo and Juliet. The idea of love is something that is valued in this play from many different aspects of characters, lines, and scenes. Shakespeare leaves the minds of readers soaring over not why it happened, but who was at fault.
The Portrayal of Romeo and Juliet's Relationship in the Play. In my opinion, the relationship between Romeo and Juliet is portrayed. in lots of different ways. It is portrayed as tragic, united, shows.
In the second act of the play Romeo attends a Capulet party that he knows he never should be going to. The Montague family would forbid of him to do this, but Romeo continues with his actions. After he meets Juliet he marries her without anyone in his family knowing. If he felt as though he must be with Juliet he should have talked to his family regarding the thoughts he was having. After marrying Juliet, he kills Tybalt and becomes banished. If Romeo never goes to the Capulet party and has an altercation with Tybalt he would not be banished. Finally, Romeo returns to Verona and kills himself without ever once sitting down and discussing with his family what is taking place in his life. The impulsive, rebellious actions Juliet partakes in also helps lead to her death. Juliet continues to talk Romeo even after she finds out he is a rival Montague. She then lies about seeing the Friar for confession and marries Romeo. Juliet then proceeds to muck at the idea of marrying Paris after romeo has killed her cousin. She completely becomes a rebel by faking her own death so she can live with Romeo which causes her real death. Romeo and Juliet are two extremely rebellious
Within the play of Romeo and Juliet, there is an evident connection between the actions of the
Therefore my findings are that those characters that share a close relationship have the same attitudes to love and marriage – the Nurse and Juliet – whereas those that have distant relationships – Capulet, Lady Capulet and Juliet – have different attitudes and views. I think that Shakespeare did this to cause tension between the characters and to keep alive the expectation of what is to come.
Although the Capulets did arrange orchestrate Juliet’s marriage to Paris, they believed that Juliet was aware of what it entailed, and openly accepted it. They did not intend to upset or harm Juliet and felt it was best for her, in addition to not knowing of her secret romance. In Friar Laurence’s case, he was aware of how much the two loved each other, and chose to provide Juliet with a potion that would lead to her death. Romeo did not know of this, and when he did hear of what she had done, it was too late. If Friar Laurence had chosen to ask Friar John to deliver the letter to Romeo promptly, Romeo would have known the urgency of the situation, preventing the unfortunate deaths of the couple in the end. Friar Laurence’s actions had a directly negative impact on the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, based on his failure to consider the effect of his own actions on their lives and
He did not give much thought on how Juliet feels about the marriage and agrees to marry the two even though Juliet had not given him consent. For example, when Paris asks Capulet if Juliet would love him; Capulet responds, "Of my child 's love: I think she will be ruled. In all respects by me; nay, more, I doubt it not." (4.3.13-14). Capulet’s relationship with Juliet is superficial; he does not understand or know his daughter well. By creating the wedding, he causes Juliet to become desperate as she would be marrying someone she doesn’t love. To add to the matter, instead of trying to understand his daughter’s perspective, he becomes aggressive and gives her with an ultimatum. Capulet shouts, “Disobedient wretch! I tell thee what: get thee to church o 'Thursday, Or never after look me in the face.” (3.5.160-163). By forcing Juliet into marriage, she becomes desperate and causes her to begin considering death as a way out. "I 'll to the friar, to know his remedy; If all else fail, myself have power to die." (3.5.241-242). Capulet’s controlling and aggressive parenting forces Juliet to marry someone she does not love. Furthermore, this causes Juliet to starts considering suicide as a way out. Capulet’s actions to forcefully marry Juliet to Paris brings her death because it results in the Friar’s potion plan which would cause the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. If Capulet did not
Juliet?s parents, Lord and Lady Capulet, play an important role in Juliet?s tragic end. Lord Capulet insisted on Juliet marrying Paris and got angry at her when she refused, telling her to ?go with Paris to Saint Peter?s Church, or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither ? out, you baggage!? (III, iv, 154-156). This forcefulness demonstrated by her father has surely contributed to Juliet making rash decisions without thinking them through as her sense of isolation grew. Lord Capulet also never makes any attempt to end the generations of feuding between the Capulets and the Montagues. A peaceful relationship between the two families would have given Romeo and Juliet no reason to hide their love for each other. Most importantly, the Capulets were traditional parents, strictly adhering to the society around them. Lady Capulet compared Juliet to other girls by saying ?younger than you, here in Verona, ladies of esteem are already made mothers? (I, iii, 69-71) whi...
How Shakespeare Presents Love and the Problems of Love in Romeo and Juliet With particular focus on Act 1 Scene 5 and Act 2 Scene 2, show how. Shakespeare presents love and the problems of love in Romeo and Juliet. In the book Romeo and Juliet we look at the love and passion between Romeo of the Montague house and Juliet of the Capulet house as well. the feud between the two houses. Act 1 scene 1:
By illustrating the negative effects of deception in relationships in the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows how important honesty is in
Juliet’s arranged marriage with Paris, as well as the ancient feud between Capulets and Montagues, eventually contributed to the deaths of their children. In Act 1 Scene 2, Paris asks Capulet, ‘But now, my lord, what say you to my suit?’ which shows that Capulet and Paris are discussing Juliet’s possible marriage without consulting her, perhaps implying they think she is too nave to decide on her future. They are arranging her marriage for her, which implies that men are very controlling of women’s lives, especially those of their daughters. The scene establishes how Juliet is subject to parental influence, and how she is very constrained since her father can force her to marry whoever he wants. Juliet’s status as a woman leaves her with no power or choice in the decision of whom she should marry.
“Is she a Capulet? O dear account! my life is my foe’s debt” (1.5.117-118). There are many factors that put pressure on Romeo’s and Juliet’s relationship throughout Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The young couple is effected in many ways by every instance that creates stress which Romeo’s and Juliet’s relationship is being forced to carry. The biggest factors that impact them are, their families ongoing feud, the broken relationships they both have in their families, and all the instances of miscommunication. Through the story of the couple who meet one another at a dance, sneak around at night to see one another, and fight for eachother, they face challenges many challenges, that add stress to their relationship.
