Finding the right friends has helped Sam become successful. To Sam, George and Rameck are more than friends, they are brothers. It was because of them that he was motivated enough to not stop pushing even when he failed to execute as task. They also helped Sam to understand that nothing gonna bring him down as long as he has the right friends. Sam writes “I had to let these guys go. I would never be able to rise with them tugging at my heals” (98). Sam originally had been friends with people who were known to be the troubling boys, wasn’t doing him any good and that it was time to let them go. He learned that the group of boys he surrounded himself with were holding him down and it wasn't going to do him any good. This lead to one of the biggest questions from the movie, how did he become that way? Hirschi’s Control Theory is a theory that states “that social control depends on people anticipating the consequences of their behavior”(Macionis 248). It was shown in the movie that Sam had a complicated relationship with his family, so his past is a big reason as to why he acts so deviant in the future. On of the four types of social control is attachment. Attachment is family, friends and school relationships. Sam was first introduced as one of Benny’s friends “crazy cousin”. It was clear that he did not enjoy having Sam around. This can reveal that Sam has a weak relationship with his family as a whole because he wasn’t even living with his parents. This would lead Sam to acting deviant without worrying about what they would think of him. It was also later revealed that Sam was kicked out of school based on his actions. Sam never had to worry about his family or school once that relationship broke off. Another type of social control is involvement. Involvement can mean many things, but it’s basically about holding a job, going to school, or participating in a sport. The character of Sam, as stated before, was kicked out of school. So, he didn’t have school keeping him away from deviant behaviors. And then there 's the reveal that Sam can’t write or read well. Sam had made an attempt to get a job at a movie store, but he would 've had to do an application, which required him to write. He was shown to be scared and nervous after he attempted at write on the form. Sam had little involvement in anything because he was a poor writer and reader, which lead him to act more deviant. A final reason as to why Sam acted so deviant, was because had little opportunity in life. Sam’s high school is like any stereotypical high school with it’s various social crowds. The popular crowd in this movie is composed of mostly jocks and cheerleaders. These adolescents seem to be the most physically attractive and have the wealthiest parents.
This is shown in the way that he analyses his coworker Stokesie. For example, Sammie describes Stokesie as a “responsible married man finding his voice” (737), who “thinks he is going to be manager some sunny day, maybe in 1990” (737). Since this short story was published in 1959, 1990 was viewed as a very long time away, therefore applying that Stokesie will probably never move up to a management position, and neither will Sammy. Holden has not have many friends. He feels like he is outside the society. He does not accept society, thinks that society is not sincere. So he thinks everyone is “phony”. “ ‘How'sa boy, Ackley?’ he said to Ackley. He was at least a pretty friendly guy, Stradlater. It was partly a phony kind of friendly, but at least he always said hello to Ackley and all.” (Catcher 30) According to quote, even though Holden thinks Stradlater is a friendly guy, he calls him phony. He displayed a trait that is helpful to others and surprising to see out of someone many consider to not be very smart. Through the many peer pressures in life, stay away from people who have bad qualities and indulge in drugs just for a “thrill” in life. Life is much better sober and once a person is addicted to drugs and other illegal substances, it is hard to recover. In life, friends will come and go, but if these “friends” don’t have your best interest at heart, then many you should rethink your friendship. Being skeptical is not a bad thing if your being cautious for yourself. As long as you try to follow these suggestions made by Alonzo Mourning, it will help you to succeed in life and achieve your goals.
