Moving into a new environment is a huge transition in a person’s life. Throughout the process of initial adjustment, the person may feel confused and anxious about new culture until they form an understanding of their environment and the social constructs associated with the new surroundings. During the summer courses, I felt anxious and uncertain about the new academic expectations imposed on me. My fellow classmates seemed quite superior in their English proficiency and as a mature, married student, and I felt depressed and frustrated.
Both workshops for a Master program and for a specialized in Education were interesting. Personally, "interesting" means that something was not boring, enough understanding, and quite helpful to get some idea or more interest, and the workshops did so. I could learn lots of information that I should know while I am studying at Brock University. Also, I could meet significant faculty members for my studying

journey and learned a bit about them. The workshops provided educational resources that would aid the academic and professional development of the new graduate students. We were encouraged to ….. Through a conversation with seniors, I realized that active participation is key to communication with the school, classmates, communities, professors, and many facilities.
As international graduate students, we are encouraged to find our place in the community where we volunteer and broaden our learning opportunities in various campus activities. Voluntary participation can lead students to communicate better as well as enjoy the benefits of learning and living Canada so that could be assimilated into Canadian culture. In order to do this, I also learned time and health management is significantly crucial.
Particularly, I enjoyed the presentations conducted by the seniors and some professors. Their presentations inspired and sparked enthusiasm for learning and exploring various theories in education. I learned there are different styles and streams as well as various topics for research. Additionally, I recognized that in order to be successful I should plan wisely and study to improve my English proficiency and academic
writing A famous Korean proverb states: “Know the enemy and know yourself, and you will never be in peril in a hundred battles.” It means that if I want to win or succeed in any challenges, I should know and learn about the object first rather than be ignorant of it. This quotation apparently inspires me that learning of differences could be a crucial strategy to be successful in transitioning to a broader, higher different educational climate in the Master of Education International Students Program (M.Ed. ISP) at Brock. Workshops were quite constructive for me in terms of providing an opportunity to learn about Brock University, master programs, and human resources, which are important factors for a successful transition in academia. I am reminded of my passion when I planned on studying at Brock and one of my favorite quotes, “Making change is not a thought but an action”. I appreciate having those workshops and meeting seniors and professors as well.
I learned significantly a lot more than I would have previously. The example of lactose intolerance was very interesting; it really did give prime reasoning to human adaption. The concept of current human evolution was surprising to me; it is shown through evidence that I would not have connected to before. I found value in the talk by how well it relates to real life events and how these examples give confirmation to this theory. Pobiner left the audience with the indecisive question that left me wondering: is this adjusting or adapting? Only the future will
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
Multiple essays have been formulated during the duration of Composition 1. These essays have taught me an important lesson about my writing, failure is acceptable in order to grow. On the other hand, I made an important discovery last year that I want to study journalism and advance further in that field after college. From taking journalism classes, to blogging in my spare time, to always getting an A on my papers, I thought I had no room to improve. I was mistaken. Therefore, because of the rigorous essay work each essay brought, I learned more about how to write different pieces and grow from my “failure”.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
I am studying at Auckland International College (AIC), whose students come from many countries in the world, such as New Zealand, South Africa, America, Russian, China, Korea, etc. In this aspect, I believe that this life is similar to life at university because I, as well, have to communicate with people who have different nationalities and speak different languages. Nationality and language are factors that usually prevent a student from assimilating into a new environment. However, I think the experience at AIC can help me overcome these obstacles; and I, in turn, will support other international students. This is the way that I will contribute to life at Rice.
One of the first and most common problems most, if not all international students face when they first arrive in the UK for study is culture shock. culture shock is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary(2014) as the feeling of disorientation experienced by someone when they are suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life, or set of attitudes. When students first move to the UK they observe and experience several things for the first time and it tends to overwhelm them. New international students often find themselves feeling powerless and unimportant which often forces them into self-isolation(Bailey, 2005). The culture shock also tends to result in the students being unable to make friends in their new community because they are unsure of what is customary and regarded in good light (Bailey, 2005).
One of the major problem that international students face during their days in the United State are the stresses they had in many different areas. Since many people migrated to the United States for better opportunities and jobs, it had become into a “melting pot”, where there were many different ethnic groups. In the article written by Ying, she explained, for an international student who just arrived at the United States, he/she would be unfamiliar with everything and will be experiencing “cultural-shock”. Which causes international student struggling with anxiety, stress and “psychological disequilibration”. It will take time for one to adapt to the situation. However, it will not be any easy task for one to overcome, since the stressors are everywhere and will be in different areas of one’s
I knew most of the buzz words prior to the course but have now started to truly understand them. Discussion forum. The discussion forums this week were incredible. Most of the responses where very detailed and thoughtful, and displayed a level of interest beyond the previous norm.
International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying in also has a very different way of life than theirs. Also the laws in foreign country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture. Me personally as an international student in the US studying in ASU have faced three particularly difficult challenges that I was able to overcome through time. In this essay I will explain how international students can overcome tough challenges and situations.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and
One of the most important ways in which this class provided a beneficial learning experience is the fact that as a student it gave me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge by being able to properly do research, document that information, As wells as bringing my message in an informative, answer-driven format by broadening my communicational skills.
I have discovered a lot about myself in general and how to deal with many issues for myself and others. I learn to think more critical in the class and in the real world as well. This course has helped me overcome my fear of worrying. I was unsure of myself when I first start class, but I quickly learn to understand myself and other people behavior by looking at my own self first that meant on the inside and outside. I have always been goal-oriented and generally known what I want out of life. This course has helped me to know myself better. It has taught me a valuable skill that I can apply at work with the students and in the master’s degree program. I have found that I like online education, and I know that I can achieve my goals if I work hard enough. This class forced me to become more organized. Through the various assignments, I have mastered the use of technology. I learned to communicate through discussion question with my classmates and instructor.
It was really interesting to learning about college culture, which just means like if a college is a sporty school,or if it is a very laid back types of school. I thought it was very helpful to know; because that way you will be happy at college. With knowing about College culture. I knew that Mars hill University was the college I wanted to transfer
This essay investigates the barriers that students may face in adjusting from normal life to university culture. The barriers are changing in attitudes and experiences of students, developing metacognitive skills, culture shocks and the university requirements such as IELTS exam and learning.
There was a significant amount of knowledge given in this course, involving concepts that in our teaching career will be extremely important. From this course I have gained a significant amount of learning experiences. I had the pleasure learning about how the educational system has come to be what it is today and who were the important people in the creation of the public education, like Horace Mann. Watching the videos and reading the chapters required has opened my eyes more of how a teacher should respond to different situations involving a student, For example when we read the chapter on the laws that revolve around the educators and the students. I had absolutely no clue that students had rights while in school property. Another learning
