As far back as I can remember I have been raised in a Christian setting. Upon coming to Williams I knew I would be entering another world in which I would have to learn to view and accept other individuals inputs and values regardless of our differences. It is interesting to see the diversity of the campus religiously despite the predominance of certain ethnicities. Like Hegel, Schleiermacher, Nietzsche and Kierkegaard I actually have my own ideologies behind the concept of religion. Religion is defined as: the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. That definition is given to us. Nobody knows the origin of the definition or who created the concept of religion. It seems to me that the first person to ever orate or deal with religion dictated the whole lineage of what would ensue. Regardless of the different classifications and names of religions ALL religions have the same fundamental characteristic, just modified in ways that are personally appeasing. The characteristic is the fact that all religions worship or believe in a superhuman entity or entities that control the vast majority or all aspects of their lives. Some preachers have accumulated unmerciful wealth while people within their congregations were still struggling, there have been cases of sexual abuse within churches, and few preachers have even been caught up in adultery. It’s entirely ironic that corruption is more frequent within churches that teach from the bible versus all other religions. Although this happens and it is discovered, many people believe it wont happen in their church so no activism follows. With all these negative factors, it reinforces my opinion that church is just an escape, a resort, and asylum to feel that better things will
