Reflective Essay: A Place In West Side Long Beach

Globally, different spaces mean different things to different people. Based on their background or childhood experiences, a certain space can hold different meanings. To some people, a place like church might represent strength, faith or love, but to others that same church might represent more negative values like colonialism or repression, especially if they have had bad experiences with church or religion. Growing up, one of the most unique and important places for me was a place in West Side Long Beach called Hudson park. Hudson park was where I practiced football, but it also was more than that. At Hudson park, my teammates taught me about intensity and always bringing energy to practice. The competitive nature of our practices led to lifelong friendships and a desire to work toward success. Although it may not be the best park in Long Beach in terms of equipment and location, Hudson Park still captured and represented the desire that my community and its members had of working toward success.

On the one hand, Hudson park is accessible because there is no fence around the park. By not having a fence this creates opportunities for anyone to enter the park and enjoy it. On the other hand, Hudson park is not accessible because unless you know where it is, you may not know how to get there or know that it is even there. One thing that make Hudson park hard to find and access is that it is not really located by a train station or a bus stop, so it is not really close to public transportation. For a place to be comfortable and safe it needs to be in a good neighborhood and look safe and inviting. Hudson park is not a very comfortable safe place because of the area that it is in.
