Reflection Paper # 3: The Development of Relationships
The idea and development of relationships was always very black and white for me. I had always seen all relationships such as friendships, partnerships, and family relationships, falling under one category. I have recently learned this is not the case at all. There are actually many different components that make up a relationship and as well different categories for different relationships. Robert Sternberg created a model of love called the triangular model of relationships that encompasses the various elements that are necessary for any relationship and as well the different classifications of relationships (Brannon, 2011). Like I mentioned earlier these relationships include the components of intimacy and commitment. I feel that my friendships fall under this type of relationship because within my friendships I share a lot of intimacy with my friends. When I say intimacy what I mean is that my friends and I are really close. Most of my closest friends I met at a young age and I have remained friends with many of them since then. With my friendships, there is also commitment between our relationships. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for my friends and I know they feel the same for me. I have really enjoyed the class. I have learned about relationships and have been enlightened on not only how we share love, but as well how we express it. What has surprised me the most is the amount I have learned about myself. I have been able to see the different types of relationships that I have in my life and how they have both positively and negatively affected me. I look forward to learning more about relationships and how they relate to gender development and more importantly I hope to learn more about myself.
