I’ve always known that visual merchandising is related to making a retail store look presentable and appealing for customers to buy more. That visual merchandising is in charge of making the window displays and merchandising the store. However, in this course I learned the reason why it’s done in a specific way and I learned all the principles and elements of designs. The process of designing a layout and choosing the best merchandising strategy that best benefits our target market is more complicated than just making it look pretty. Learning the principles and elements of design, and usage of lighting and signage clearly made me understand what the term visual merchandise entails. It gave me the opportunity to see how each aspect can affect the final results. I wished that this had been the last project, because the other projects really help to have a better understanding of this project in particular. I’m aware that this term is quite different, but if there were a way to change it in a future it would be very beneficial. The Visual Retailing project was my least favorite one, because it feels a little repetitive with CIMM projects. In the case of this term, it probably would have been a good project to understand the merchandise strategies in order to apply it for the D&M Shop project. However, it felt like we were repeating the D&M Shop project, but in a virtual version. When a person is shopping they typically are drawn to something eye catching that is either in or on the storefront. Some storefronts appeal to a very specific customer group whereas others are very general. One storefront that does a good job of pulling the attention of a fairly specific customer group is H&M. The front of this store is very modern, with clean lines that make it appear very sleek and elegant. Something else that this store does that helps them is that almost the entire storefront is made of huge floor to ceiling windows which not only go along to the sleek, modern design but it also allows the customers to see completely into the store. The project ended up not being particularly valuable for me in the sense that the change was never really able to become permanent. This is most likely directly because I did not strictly adhere to my change plan either by choice or by extenuating circumstance. The project has shown me that in order for a difficult change to be made it has to be an incredibly high priority. My change ended up not being as high on my priority list as studying for exams or going out with friends when I had limited time around exams which was ultimately the downfall of my change.
I think the project that most impacted me as a learner was the memorial project. This projected made me grow as a learner because I had to work with someone that I had never worked with before. When we started just getting a topic that we both wanted to do was the first thing that made me realize that this project was going make me need to use and learn some new skills. My partner and I had some trouble with trying to come up with a design to show everything we wanted to show for our topic. We had to be patient with each other making sure the we both listing to each other and understanding what and why they wanted to do this. We also has some trouble with communication because we didn’t completely understand what the other wanted making ti hard to finalize our design. Another thing with communication was who was doing what my partner didn’t always know what to do so we would sometimes end up wasting time trying to find something for her to do that she wanted to do. Communicating was something that I really improved on for this project teaching me how to be more specific with what I say so that we don’t get confused later.
