The way we think plays such a huge role in our day to day lives, we are unaware how much thoughts shape the way we handle things and how we react to them. I chose this particular theory based on the fact that this concept has helped me get out of my depression. It is shown that this specific theory has often shown helpful for clients suffering from depression, anxiety, panic and obsessive-compulsive disorder. (Mulhauser, 2014). While dealing with depression for instance one can find it quite hard changing their mindset so I can understand that this a challenging aspect of this therapy but none the less every theory has its pros and cons. When I was seeing a therapist at first I have to admit it was a very trying endeavor but while looking at this therapy more extensively I have noticed that a lot of the methods she used on me were from the cognitive view point. While any kind of therapy or theories for that matter work for some and not others it about how much you put into bettering yourself regardless of what theory that therapist has chosen to work with. While on theory might work for some it might not work for others. But with this type of the theory and the techniques applied I found it to be rather helpful during my time of depression. I can stay that when I applied those techniques for instance the thought record that I was told to help with my negative thoughts it gave the insight that I need to get out of that kind of mind frame. This theory promotes a positive mind set. Which I think is great way to go about problems I also enjoy this theory because they strictly focus on the thoughts and why one is having them. To me this theory makes the most logical sense in regards to helping someone who is depressed or had anxiety and it has been proven to be effective in treating those areas unlike some of the other theories like psychoanalyst that look too much on the past. I find that this theory focuses on the future which can promote helpful when someone is dwelling on the past like I had done. She has no interest in hobbies, which have been very important to her in the past. Her lack of ambition and her suicidal tendencies are causing great concern for her family members. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy has its foundations in two distinctive therapeutic theories, Cognitive Therapy and Behavioural Therapy. Cognitive Therapy (CT) believes that thoughts, feelings and behaviour are connected. I believe this theory would allow me to develop an integrative approach. The theory is about accepting what it means to be human, and that we are all authors of our lives. I feel that this particular theory allows people to accept who they are, what they do, and what they believe, but helps them realize that who they are is not absolute or unchangeable, and that they can re-create themselves. In my group, in addition to my primary theory being existential, I would draw from psychoanalytic (insight on unconscious motivation), cognitive therapy (cognitive restructuring), rational emotive behavior therapy (eliminate self-defeating outlook), reality therapy (choices) and narrative therapy (separate from problems). If I had to limit myself to one supplementary theory it would be rational emotive behavior therapy. I feel that this theory would compliment existential, due to existential focusing on accepting what it means to be human, while rational emotive behavior therapy helps reduces unhealthy emotional response, and eliminates a self-defeating outlook on life. I believe that in order for one to accept what it means to be human (existential), and to become an author of their own life (existential), they need to eliminate their self-defeating outlook (REBT), and unhealthy emotional responses
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a method of correcting invalid thought patterns to a more positive view of the person and their place in their world. Some people do not believe that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a real treatment for depression, claiming it is a form of positive thinking ("The Daily Mail," 2009). On the opposite end of the spectrum, others argue that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy should be used in all therapies for depression as it allows the patient to take an active role in their treatment. According to Graham (2005), CBT aims to change a patient’s unhealthy behaviour through examining assumptions behind the thought patterns (cognitive restruction) and also through using behaviour therapy techniques. When conducting a research study on participants who suffer from depression, I will be looking for individuals that range in ages between 18-25 that attend local colleges. It is important to know that we are seeking both male and female participants and all races can partake in the study. Applicants must attend one of the local universities. I am looking for adults that suffer from mild to severe forms of depression only. We are looking for individuals to take part in a research study to see how different treatment options may affect their depression symptoms. There will be a pre-screening done with a questionnaire to see if participants qualify for the research study. We did put the criteria together in a specific way and if you do not qualify or meet those specific criteria we will notify you immediately that this study is not for you. The results depend on the severity of the individual’s depression range. These results will determine if a potential participant is eligible to take part. These results will determine what level of the predictor variable that each participant will fall into derived on the range of depression symptoms.
