Reflection On Walkthroughs

I conducted my walkthroughs during the week of September 26th. I asked permission from the 8th grade teachers at FCMS to be able to conduct a walkthrough during their class with the main objective to be observing student engagement. Every teacher I asked was more than happy to let me come into their classroom. It was a learning experience to be the one doing the walkthrough versus the one that the walkthrough is being conducted on. The biggest concern that I have as a teacher and future educational leader is that a walkthrough is only a snapshot of the class. WCPS is using the block schedule so classes are 90 minutes long and that is a lot of time for the teacher to change their instruction for the better or for the worst. It is important that the teachers are using roughly the same classroom procedure and rules (ex. Warm up). This allows students to be treated consistently and have a routine. It is just like at FCHS we are having trouble with the cell phone policy as couple teachers are allowing students to use cell phones during class for non-educational reasons. I believe that individual teacher data is used to help that teacher improve. If you have data for a teacher it will help you as an educational leader work with that teacher to improve their classroom. I believe for you to value on walkthroughs you must conduct multiple and they need to be during different parts of class (ex. Beginning, middle, end). It is very clear during the 3 to 5 minutes that you’re in the classroom, that you can tell if learning is occurring and students are engaged. It is important to be able to see the teacher during different parts of class to see how they are keeping the students engaged in the learning
