English reading and writing Throughout my high school career I’ve had 3 different English teachers. I attended James Monroe High. This school has a law and government/ Police academy Magnet program; I was in the Police academy. High school requires English for all four years. I would say throughout my English classes it has had a somewhat impact on me and that I’ve learned a good amount of materials during my four years of high school. Freshman year, my English teacher was a laidback man who loved music and philosophy. We would do independent reading for about 15 or 20 minutes. The teacher really encouraged students to read books. Going on to college is a big leap from high school because you are on your own. My teacher was the same as from freshman year. Like freshmen year, we also had a 20-minute individual reading. I really liked this year for my English class because it was very informative and I learned so much. We spent a great amount of time on analyzing films. We used the diagram from John Campbell, which was “The 17 stages of John Campbell’s Monomyth”. This is about the hero’s journey throughout the film and how the hero evolves and transforms. These were educational films that were handpicked from our teacher to teach a complex diagram by John Campbell. We analyzed films such as Finding Nemo, Shawshank redemption, Wreck it Ralph, Stardust, and many more. Besides analyzing films we also had required readings, which were The Phantom Tollbooth, The Hobbit, and some poetry. My teacher didn’t like to give us boring books, but to give us a fun reading and still learn the curriculum that was required. Also in this class we learned about Plato’s theory of forms. This was by far the most interesting subject we took on because it really messes with your mind and gets your brain
However, extra academic courses helped expand my knowledge in these areas. I was able to take Phycology and Sociology, in High school. The study of why people do what they do really intrigued me because I was nothing like my siblings. Phycology and Sociology expanded my vocabulary and literacies. I looked at history from a different perspective, which interested me. It also introduced me to humanities courses. I pretty much skated by in my English classes. The books we read, I had no interest in, and I did not feel like I was getting anything out of my classes. This was until my senior year. My English teacher taught us how to read. I do not mean the words, but the content. Different methods of active reading, and note taking helped me have a deeper understanding of the content I was reading. The shift in instruction which was historically influenced helped me progress in my literacies (Panther, 2015, presentation). I could relate to the novels we were reading. The journey through language and literature has always been an intriguing one for me. It is for this reason that I chose English as my major. It seems that every teacher or professor that I have had, has always been able to pinpoint one specific element in my writing that I need to work on. This has not been a negative thing by any stretch, because with each passing semester there is an element of my literature that will be perfected for the next. This is the wonder that is English, and the reason for my passion in this subject area.

When I was younger, I was interested in reading. I loved leisure reading and used to get different books from the library at least once a week. As I have grown older, I read dramatically less and reading is more irritating. I hate reading and sometimes get annoyed when I have reading assignments in class. Through the years, there were readings that I was forced to read and did not enjoy. It has turned me off from reading for the most part. I know that reading is something that is important, but I also know that it is something that I hate doing most of the time.
Many that would discourage me as I walked through the door for the first time. None of my teachers would teach me how to write like Mrs. Plot did. It is so hard going from an encouraging teacher that cares for you, to a teacher that is only there to get paid. In my opinion, English is the most important class to be taught.To teach English you should have to be more qualified because it is not fair to the students to fail the basics of all subjects and miss out on practicing how to write. I would only read books that were required for class, and even then I usually would not finish them. Reading was never something that I liked. When I got into high school, I started reading books for fun a little more than before. I was always a Harry Potter fan but since I did not like to read I only watched the movies. I remember reading those books and actually liking them. My junior year was also a time in my reading history that I remember well. As a class we were reading the Great Gatsby in time to see the movie for the midnight premier. Each day we were instructed to read up to a certain page, no further. I did not like the book at first, just like any other book I was forced to read for school. But, one night I was reading and the book got so interesting for me I could not put it down. That was the first book in along time that I enjoyed reading that was assigned to me. After my junior year, I went right back to my old ways of not reading books. My senior year I took AP English, so this required a lot of books. Thinking back to that year of school I remember finishing maybe one or two of those books. Although, I didn’t read all of those books, I still got a good grade in the class. One thing I did learn from that class about not reading all the books was reading the summaries is not good enough because, they leave out all the
College English is a big difference compared to how high school English was taught. Many differences that I have noticed with these few past weeks that I have been here at Fresno State University would be how the group exercises are structured, how the professor shows interest about the student’s improvements with their work, and how the course materials are presented to the class. High school was not the greatest experience that I could have had during my educational years. Reading and books became a real struggle for me from elementary all the way to high school because I found it hard to comprehend the books that I was made to read. These books were not interesting to me and I found myself starring at pages for hours at a time and would not know or understand what I read.
English is like a form of martial arts. Just like getting your belt in karate, I earned my stripes in the English Language Arts. I started with ESL, then I had regular classes, worked my way into an Honors English class, and currently I am taking the challenge of AP English Literature.
When I was younger I used to like reading a lot, but since middle school, we have been told what to read and how quickly to read it. This year, we were allowed to read whatever we wanted as long as we did read, allowing me to read 3 books I never would have read alone. Since this school year started, I personally have looked forward to the beginning of class every day when we get time to read our book. It helps to transition into a reading/writing state of mind and to make class more enjoyable. This school year made me believe two things about implemented reading in the classroom; this system helps make kids more understanding and patient, encourage them to read by choice, and it also helps students become more self-reliant.
For myself, I believe that I could read quite easily and was able to pick up on it quickly. I really enjoyed reading and still do to this day. I was taught how to read through simple books I had a school and at my home. I remember those books having a similar format on each page with the way the sentence was set up, and the words which made that sentence. Reading those books were fun for me, especially when I was able to move up to the next level. As well, I can recall being read to as a child, either by my parents or grandparents or teachers. Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.
Reading always became tiresome to me. We had a reading block in class everyday. The reading block was to make us read fifteen minutes straight a day. Ms. Peshca, my seventh grade teacher, ensured that the class would read. I never read the books until we started reading The Hunger Games.
