I spoke with six close friends about race and their perceptions regarding the topic. These conversations were open and honest, and made me think of aspects of our generation and race I hadn 't previously considered. We were all white females, but all grew up in different areas, so it differed depending on the location. One of my friends brought up an interested observation that appears way too often in our generation. She mentioned that when people are referring to someone who is black they’ll normally describe them by saying, “That black guy” verses when someone is referring to a white person they normally don’t include the race description. We discussed that it happens because we have a preconceived idea that the person is white, so we need clarification when they are a different race. We also talked about how we also might be the most racial accepting generation. Several of us mentioned that our grandparents would be shocked and concerned if we married a black man, and especially a black women. Two of my friends even said their parents would be really mad if they began to date black or Muslim men. While our generation is not pure of racism or racist ideology, I believe we would be a lot more accepting of biracial relationships. Our high school experiences were all relatively similar. My family is so accepting and has only preached equality for all humans. I think their experience of acceptance and love has taught me how I should act in conversations of race. I know during conversations of race you need to be supportive and understanding. I also know that as someone who is white, I will never understand how it is to be racially oppressed. Race and ethnicity is a main factor in the way we identify others and ourselves. The real question here is does race/ethnicity still matter in the U.S.? For some groups race is not a factor that affects them greatly and for others it is a constant occurrence in their mind. But how do people of mix race reacts to this concept, do they feel greatly affected by their race? This is the question we will answer throughout the paper. I will first examine the battle of interracial relationship throughout history and explain how the history greatly explains the importance of being multiracial today. This includes the backlash and cruelty towards interracial couple and their multiracial children. Being part of a multiracial group still contains its impact in today’s society; therefore race still remaining to matter to this group in the U.S. People who place themselves in this category are constantly conflicted with more than one cultural backgrounds and often have difficulty to be accepted.
Firstly, I plan to explore how race has influenced my life. My mother is of Hispanic, and Irish decent whereas my father is of African decent. One of my earliest experiences with racism came from my mother’s side of the family. My grandmother would often say awful things about my dad to my brother and me when we visited and my parents were not around. She never hid how she felt about my parent’s relationship from us. My grandmother was opposed to my mother’s relationship with my father solely because he was, according to her, a “nigger” and of a different ethnic background and was not good enough for her daughter and that my mother was bringing shame to the family. My grandmother never accepted us whole-heartedly as her grandchildren compared to how she treated our other cousins simply because of their race and their complexion because they looked more like her side of the family than we did.

Such an individual would have the disadvantage of not knowing what the next race is truly like and therefore is lacking social "wholeness." In this world of ours, one needs to know how to deal with, talk to, and relate to all races of people. One cannot be intimidated by the next individual because of lack of knowledge of his background. Socially, I have an advantage, I know what to say, when to say it, and who to say it to. No one can be taught how to deal with "different" people. It is through experience and an open mind that one learns their most valuable lesson in life: everyone can encounter the same misfortunes, yet the dignity you display in dealing with them greatly effects the outcome and aids in completing the "circle of color."
Over the past weeks we have learned a lot of new things. I learned about different races, ethnicities, and cultures. The world would not be the same if everyone was the same race and it is a great thing to learn about everyone and where they are from, and where they have come from. Everyone is different in their own way and it is our duty to accept everyone as a whole. I am going to talk about the social construct of race today, some of our readings, and a lot of our discussions that are always fun.
I wanted to wear brand clothes/shoes they did, I wanted to do my hair like them, and make good grades like them. I wanted to fit in. My cultural identify took a back seat. But it was not long before I felt black and white did not mix. I must have heard too many comments asking to speak Haitian or I do not look Haitian, but more than that, I am black, so I always had to answer question about my hair or why my nose is big, and that I talked white. I have heard a white person tell a black person, that he or she does not act black. I have also heard the statement, “I am not racist, I have a lot of black friends.” When I hear statements like these, it makes me think that people are trying to negatively compare white and black people, even if they are not meaning to. Although I wish we could combat prejudice in the society, I don’t think that we can ever truly stop it, and racism will always be a problem in America” (Friedman, 2007). I can relate to this, not as far as race, but in a different way. At my school, there were stereotypes about the “volleyball girls”, and I was part of the volleyball team. At one point, people thought this group of girls was all about partying and not school. Although, I was only focused on school and ended my high school career with only two B’s. Although this is not as extreme a case as Junior, I can still relate.
A white student from Chenjerai’s class, Will Johnston from Clemson University, is the next speaker to approach the topic. Will explained his point of view from being in a couple of Chenjerai’s classes. He explained how ignorant he was to his white privileges until he was broken down in Chenjerai’s class. Will explains how it took a while to be able for him to talk about the topic in a diplomatic way. Tanner Colby, co-host of “about race podcast” and author of Some of my Best Friends are Black, was the next speaker in the podcast. Colby tells that he thinks people are uncomfortable about talking about whiteness and race. He says that people are unsure of how to talk about the topic which makes conversation hard. Demby and Meraji sum up what they have learned after they talked with everyone about where they stand in the conversation on whiteness. Meraji tells that they learned how difficult it truly is to talk about whiteness especially when people do not have the information they need to have a good conversation about it. As a child, I never really knew that there was anything different about having parents of two different races because that was the norm for me. But as I started getting older, there was confusion when my dad picked me up from school because friends had seen my mother the day before and she was white. As a kid, I didn’t understand what race meant or its implications. I was pretty much oblivious to it. Race meant getting some kids together and running a foot race. The one who made it to the end of the block won. I never felt that I was special because of my race. Nor did I feel discriminated against. Of course, I was sheltered from race and racism. I never knew any people of color because I grew up in an all-white, lower-to-middle-class blue-collar neighborhood. I never encountered someone of another race, and my parents made sure of it. I wasn’t allowed outside of our own neighborhood block, as my mother kept a strong leash on me. Not until I was much older did I wander outside the safety net of our all-white neighborhood.
As I reflect back on my childhood years, and utilizing a Critical Race Study lens, I can see both positive and negative aspects of my early onset experiences. In this paper, I will focus on both the negative and positive aspects of Internalized oppression/racism, as well as, identifying experiences in my life in which I was considered ‘privileged’ and how my different intersectionalities shaped and molded my views in my current helping profession role.
This is because after elementary, I moved into an Asian dominated junior high and high school. In this environment, Asian stereotypes were not taken seriously and were more often told as jokes. For example, what do you call a Vietnamese person walking a dog? A vegetarian! (my favorite joke). However, though I got over the stereotypes, my elementary years still haunt me as of today. I am now more socially awkward and uncomfortable when I am the minority or I am around white individuals. It frightens me that when I am around people who aren’t the same color as me because I feel like the judgments and incomplete stories will start to erupt, and that the incomplete stories will lead to the development of stereotypes and thus once again reenact my elementary years. This environment and atmosphere is reenacted every Monday and Wednesday’s in the WMST dialogue, where I am the minority and feelings of anxiety start to come
Throughout time, some views on particular issues in society change dramatically while others remain unchanged. Sometimes, only one aspect of the issue is perceived differently while the rest of the topic stays the same. This is demonstrated well in the case of racism. In the United States, racism itself has not changed, but the allotment for what is considered acceptable has. Racism deals with the actual outward discrimination upon a race or the mental process of thinking a race inferior to your own. This phenomenon exists in the U.S. today just as it existed in the first years of the nation's existence; however, the way it is perceived has changed drastically. Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Beecher Stowe expressed similar though not identical views of the African-American race and a belief that blacks are rational human beings. A hundred years later, Malcolm X held a dramatically different view of racism and the extent to which it affects society as a whole.
Racism: a Short History George Fredrickson makes an argument ultimately against the dichotomy between civilization and savagery, specifically the resurgence of ethnoreligious bigotry that, according to him, replaces 20th century race theory in order to justify continued inequities and sociopolitical oppression worldwide in Racism: A Brief History. His book delineates the rise of modern race theory, beginning in Medieval Europe and synthesizing an explanation for the existence and success of the overtly racist regimes, the United States, South Africa, and Nazi Germany. Fredrickson cautions, however, that racism can easily become interchangeable with religious bigotry when facing corporatism that aims to alienate, marginalize, and devalue human beings as mere consumers with little agency or any collective sense of identity. Racism's ultimate goal, according to Fredrickson, is to establish a permanent hierarchal order that "has two components: difference and power." Fredrickson's analysis is probably one of the most direct and functional definitions of racism that I have run across in a while.
This essay explored one 's experience of race/ethnicity and gender. It really made you think about your personal experiences based on your race/ethnicity and gender. For me it actually made me think deeply about how my race/ethnicity and how my gender has affected my life.
