Parinda Patel For my service project, I was assigned to go to Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). When I signed up, I was told that I would be packing food for children but when we arrived at FMSC that Saturday, I realized that we were doing much more than that. At FMSC, one of the staff members gave us a little background information about the type of children we would be helping. The images resembled the children you see in those advertisements about children in third world countries, but these images actually meant something because I knew that today, I would personally be helping these children. We worked in teams to pack rice, soy, vitamin mix, and dry vegetables into packages for children in multiple countries who were not privileged

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that nearly 870 million people of the 7.1 billion people in the world, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in the years 2010-2012. Ellen Gustafson has spoken in ted talks on the issue of Obesity plus Hunger equals one global food issue. One the main issues Gustafson speaks of is world hunger and how to end it. She also speaks briefly on obesity and how in comes into play with world hunger. Even though some people would argue that there just is not enough food in the world, world hunger and obesity can easily be prevented and eliminated with proper knowledge and programs.
I performed mainly behind the scenes tasks such as making boxes and packing food. While I did not deal with feeding the hungry directly, I still learned and observed many lessons that were reflected in class. One thing I observed that we discussed in Reconciling All Things is people ignoring and crossing divides to help those in need. The people at the food bank did not care what the person’s socioeconomic status was, they still served and helped them. A lesson that became more solidified through this project was the fact that everyone’s job at the food bank, no matter how big or small, is important to getting to overall mission completed. Whether it was someone like me making boxes or someone serving food in the kitchen, we all played a role to end hunger. Another thing that I noticed through this project was that some problems are easier, maybe not by much but still nonetheless, to solve than we make them out to be. But, there are many people that can't afford to buy food for their families, many are also homeless. “While hunger affects people of all ages, it's particularly devastating for children even short-term episodes of hunger can cause lasting damage."(“Child Nutrition Programs") Child hunger in the United States is caused by poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, and food shortage; however there are many solutions to this problem like FRAC strategies, food banks, summer feeding programs, and backpack feeding programs.
From what was just receiving volunteer hours with Rockdale Emergency Relief by graciously assisting with the preparation of 150 sack lunches daily, opened the door of a returned passion. One after another, I was filling multiple brown paper bags with a sandwich, bag of chips, a Capri Sun, and a healthy fruit snack while preparing to make my rounds for delivery to my assigned neighborhoods within Rockdale County. At each stop, I will never forget the innocent face of each child that waited for this delivery. I felt as if I were driving an ice-cream truck as all the children stumbled over one another running out of their homes towards us, Summer Lunch Program volunteers, with joy anticipating their sack lunches. Questions ran through my head wondering how one could be so ecstatic about what I had prepared in each bag. It was not candy, ice-cream, nor toys, but it was proper nourishment to each growing body reaching for their meal. As an important factor to their daily function, I could comprehend by their eagerness how much this delivery meant to each child and their parents or caregivers, and that made my heart melt. During the [Project Wisdom] program, my principal tells us a quote then he goes on to explain it. For example, he would say, "Danny Thomas once said, 'Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others." This quote hit me like a thunderbolt. I was constantly thinking about it. Then I saw homeless people while I was walking home from school. I thought of nothing but the quote, so as I got closer to the homeless people, I pulled out my wallet and gave them a ten dollar bill. The feeling I got when the homeless people looked at me is indescribable. After this experience, almost every time someone is in need of something, I give or at least try to give them what they need because of the self-content it brings me. The "Words of Wisdom" program made a difference in my life by helping me discover that it feels good to serve others.

Poor children are more likely to go hungry and are less likely to be read to during their early years. They are less likely to have health insurance and needed care. Poor children are more likely to start school behind their affluent peers and are less likely to graduate high school. They are more likely to grow up as poor adults and become involved in the criminal justice system. A family of four's annual income must be lower than 23,000 to reach child poverty. Children in single parent homes were four times more likely to be poor than children in two adult families. Hunger is a result of poverty, as well as poverty being a result of hunger. Hunger causes the body’s radius to decrease in addition to a person’s level of energy and mental functions. An adult’s hunger struggle could seriously affect their labor abilities and could eventually lead to unemployment. Unemployment and low incomes are the all time leading causes of childhood hunger. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Why should there be hunger and privation in any land, in any city, at any table when man has the resources and the scientific know-how to provide all mankind with the basic necessities of life?” (Child Hunger Fact Sheet).
Giving to others through humanitarian projects is not only inclusive of providing monetary solutions for food. Philosophies and intention to reach specific goals are also associated with the needs of others. The Hunger Project is designed with the central goal of eradicating poverty. However, it is found that this is not done only by feeding the poor, but instead through empowerment initiatives that allow others to change their lives. When looking at the approach used to The Hunger Project, it can be seen that the ability to provide empowerment to others will assist in changing lives through donations. The impact which is made by making a donation creates an initiative not only through the power of changing lives of those in need. It also alters the socio political landscape and the global society at large. This impact is one which can redefine the overall functions in the globe, specifically by eradicating poverty.
Child Poverty has been an ongoing issue throughout the world for decades. The problem of child poverty affects every part of the world. Poverty has pervasive consequences that can last a lifetime. In this paper I will discuss poverty and how it impacts the lives of children and include the lasting influence of child poverty in adulthood.
1: The social problem I decided to do research upon was world hunger and its impact on poverty. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 were initially created by Obama to end the recession. When this policy was introduced it focused mainly on ensuring that Americas could economically bounce back from this recession, mainly the low-income families that were the most devastated by this. However, after this policy was successful it started to grow. It helped increase jobs, helped with healthcare; also it created a program to address the problem of world hunger. This program was called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program. Since the resources needed to provide for ideal agriculture conditions are diminishing, genetic engineering of food is the best option. As this program is heavily funded and approved by the government, it is on a path to fix all the glitches of genetic engineering. The world hunger situation is a big one, because resources needed are on a decline as the need grows. By advancing this technology, it will help the community not go hungry, by helping low income families as well others to save money, by turning their regular habits (consuming food), into a more environmentally sufficient method. Genetic engineering is projected to be cheaper and as healthy, if so even healthier than normal farming will eventually help low income families to put food on their table. To conclude, this policy was created to make America more efficient, and avoid the end of any resource whether it is money or food. The work this policy is doing to advance technology will help lower costs, and will still fulfill the resources the common family needs.
Over the years, human beings have not made the right conclusions when it comes to benevolence. In considering when a decision should be made regarding a fellow human being in need, trivial conditions are used as excuses such as distance, magnitude, and how well you know someone. Considerably wealthy countries have given money but it amounts to a fraction of the costs of their own development of transportation and entertainment. The morality of the situation is skewed in order to coddle the conscience of the inactive. As much as people and governments would like to, they cannot deny what is happening in the world around them. The position taken by Singer is that the way people in wealthier countries respond to situations in which others around them need help due to some man made or natural disaster is unjustifiable. Singer argues that many thinks need to be redesigned—namely, what shapes and affects our definition of morality and our way of life that we tend to take for granted.
I assisted teachers, spoke to the kids as well aided the janitorial crew. However, there was this young kid, who was always picked on and made fun of. His mother had died when he was at a young age, and his dad is always working to support the rest of his family. He didn’t have much luxury as other kids in the already poor area. I talked to him and he opened up to me. He told me about his feelings and family and everything that he has been through. I showed empathy and put myself in his shoes. He told me that I was one of the first people that had actually tried understanding and caring about what has happened in his life. When the topic of world hunger is broached, the majority of people’s minds will automatically equate the two words with an impossible-to-solve problem affecting only Africa. However, to make that connection is inaccurate, and ultimately damaging to the actual efforts being made towards eradicating hunger. There are more than 870 million individuals in the world who suffer from chronic undernourishment, with the majority of undernourished individuals residing in Asia or the Pacific. While Africa understandably rises to the forefront of the mind when hunger is discussed, the statistics prove that hunger permeates into a plethora of regions, and affects a wide range of countries, cultures, and age groups. Despite its wide reach, global hunger is a solvable problem. The fact that a solution has not yet been implemented speaks loudly to the lack of cooperation being exhibited throughout the world. There is more than enough food to end world hunger; it is merely a lack of proactivity and cooperation among those in power that continues to allow the problem to grow. Solving world hunger may seem to be a daunting task, but a solution is within reach as long as a more cohesive semblance of cooperation throughout the globe (including both developed and developing countries) is achieved. This cooperation would embrace the sharing of excess goods to countries in need of them, as well the establishment of sustainable agricultural systems in countries currently lacking them—goals which are only achievable through recognition of the problem and an increased involvement by the entire globe.
For instance, it was an extremely sunny day in Ghana, West Africa, and I had gone out to the well to fetch water. It was while carrying the bucket of water on my way back that I noticed my neighbor’s children fighting over the insufficient amount of food that they had to share. My family and I were not rich but from what I saw, I knew that we were better off than other people I knew. I carried the bucket of water inside the house and came back outside to call the two youngest children that were fighting over the last grain of food. I shared my food my food with them and though it was not sufficient for all, feeding the younger ones alone was better than not helping any one of them at all. There was only little that I could possibly do but by sharing, I had helped them in a great way, even if it was just for the time being.
