In the first week I have learned about various health and safety issues of the community and its impact on the community. Learning about Tuskegee syphilis study helped me to understand about various ethical issues and its significance in healthcare. Learning about descriptive statistics, inferential statistics and research summaries such as meta-analysis, meta-synthesis, systematic research reviews, clinical practice guidelines, and care protocol helped me to identify the level of research evidence and where to seek the evidence in order to find an answer to my clinical question. Gaining more knowledge about Evidence Based Practice (EBP) brought knowledge about its importance in nursing and how to apply evidences into practice. Counselors are very dependent on the research of others. Counselors are among many who are responsible for producing evidence based practice. Counselors have a responsibility to be eager and capable of locating and using evidence based interventions. Research reports are used to help summarize the findings of different types of research in the counseling profession. The results of a research report should summarize the findings of the research. According to Sheperis, Young, and Daniels 2010, “it should be easy for the reader to connect the findings with the stated research questions and to determine whether the finding support or refute your hypothesis” (p.239). The following are two challenges that the counseling profession is faced with when it comes to outcome research: (1) producing sufficient volumes of evidence and (2) being able to find, interpret, and use the evidence from previous research. These challenges place a limit on the variety of interventions that are available to the counseling profession. One intervention that works for one child, might not produce the same results for another child. So it is very important that research provides information that is useful and effective. The lack of studies makes it more challenging to determine whether or not an intervention is an effective solution that will improve a student’s behavior or academics. “Ultimately, regardless of how effective a counselor may be, if the problems are not properly measured and assessed, intervention is disadvantaged and treatment is comprised” (Sheperis, Young, & Daniels, 2010, p. 3). In order to best serve clients we have to complete comprehensive research and use the results to the advantage of the client.

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a process, a clinical master tool, so to speak, used by the nurse who is focused on positive outcomes in patient care. Registered Nurses (RNs), that assume a leadership role, continuously assess their practice in order to find out what is working and what is lacking or in need of more information (Barry, 2014). The RN who uses EBP strives to prevent healthcare errors, critically thinking through processes and anticipating obstacles, methodically drawing upon clinical research and expertise, including their own knowledge and drawing upon the individual patient experience toward improving safety and quality care (Barry, 2014). This systematic approach sets the RN apart from others, who may otherwise be tempted to remain stuck in old ineffective routines, and allows the RN the unique opportunity to affect change, most importantly, change that is directed toward keeping patients safe and receiving the best quality care (Barry, 2014).
Qualitative and quantitative methods allow researchers to investigate, explore and inquire the nature of the phenomenon being studied. It is important that the researcher develops a clear understanding of the problem and design a plan to investigate it (Cresswell, 1998, para. 1). There are a variety of research methods; nevertheless, it is important to consider which research method is appropriate for the study. Qualitative research focuses on human experiences while quantitative research relies on numbers, measurements, and testing. Nevertheless, qualitative and quantitative methods use similar approaches to conduct research and collect data. For example, observations and interviews are approaches used in both research designs; however, the approaches are used and viewed otherwise. This will be discussed later in the paper.
Evidence based practice (EBP) is "the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The practice of evidence-based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research" (Sackett et al, 1996). This definition takes into consideration the need to delve into the professional’s clinical knowledge (Burns, 2007) as well as looking into the best evidence to support the professional. Clinical practices may become out dated if new evidence is not sourced and professionals should be aware of appropriate evidence that can be integrated into their practice (Aveyard & Sharp, 2013). Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an interdisciplinary approach to clinical practice that many organizations are being utilized. “The benefits of EBP, including greater cost effectiveness, and better patient safety, clinical outcomes, and patient and staff satisfaction are widely acknowledged” (Embedding a culture of evidence-based practice, page 14). In this paper, I will discuss how evidence-based practice is being utilized in the organization I work for, how nurses at the bedside are encouraged to participate in planning and implement evidence-based changes and what factors are available for nurses to use when implementing evidence-based practice. I will also discuss how nurses can suggest or help improve evidence-based practice and sustain a positive environment for EBP.
Evidence-based practice is important to consider when researching for interventions, further knowledge, or help to guide a new idea in the health professions. Evidence-based practice is comprised of three significant concepts: respect and awareness for the targeted population’s values, previous clinical practice or experience with that population, and systematic research to establish a better understanding of what is already known about the study’s focus. When NPs do some of the patient care, the orthopedic surgeons will have more time to do more surgeries which will generate more revenue. Non-standardized protocol created a financial burden to the hospitals, related to medical supply. The physician’s vendor preference could be influenced by vendor relationship and personal benefit rather than evidence that benefit patients and contain costs. The patient’s outcome is going to suffer due to a lack of standardized protocol.

Descriptive Reflection Throughout my nursing career I have never truly understood or accepted nursing theory as anything of great importance. Truthfully through previous courses I found myself wondering how nursing theorists even considered themselves a part of nursing at all. Nursing theorists’ views in my eyes were so drastically removed from what was actually occurring medically within my patients that I felt that the entire subject was worthless.
The main data collection techniques used by the researcher included observations and interviews. These set of techniques ensured that the data collected was direct from the source, increasing its validity. The first journal article made use of the qualitative methodology. The research team used this approach with the aim of quantifying the issue of housing and health through the generation of numerical data that was transformed into statistics. The researcher, by using this methodology, attempted to quantify not only the attitudes, but the behaviors, opinions, and other variables of the sample population and generalized the results to the real population.
