As society evolves and changes with the times the concepts of diversity and culture have transformed into a melting pot of ideas. One must take into consideration how a person’s cultural identity, education, economic status, language, and religion shape their perspective of how diversity and culture influences their life.
In unit one of this course I was asked to analyze cultural identity within the educational realm. I was challenged to think out of the box to define what culture meant to me as well as how society views culture. Nieto (2008) states that “The term culture can be problematic because it can mean different things to different people in different contexts” (p. 128).

Culture is the customs and traditions that a person practices, that provide an insight on what he or she believes. Every culture or ethnic group has their own individual cultural identity that is expressed through the music they create and listen to as well as the social norms they acquire by interacting and communicating with each other. I came to realize how language influences culture. The way you speak provides an insight into on how other individuals perceive you. Language can cause misinterpretations among students and teachers. As an educator, I need to respect and take into account a child’s home language and not judge on the bases that they may use slang or have a dialect that does not fall into the social norms. Reading the book The skin we speak: Thoughts on language and culture in the classroom. by Lisa Delpit and Joanne Kilgour Dowdy provided even more insight into language as it relates to the classroom setting. Lisa Delpit’s book, “The Skin We Speak”, talked about language and culture, and how it relates to the classroom. How we speak gives people hits as to where we are from and what culture we are a part of. Unfortunately there are also negative stereotypes that come with certain language variations. There is an “unfounded belief that the language of low income groups in rural or urban industrial areas is somehow structurally “impoverished” or “simpler” than Standard English” (Delpit 71). The United States is made of people from various cultures and speak many different variations of languages. As teachers we must be aware of some of the prejudices we may have about language and culture.
The essay starts off by talking about a common belief shared by many parents now about how students miss out on “a great deal by not being taught their family’s language”(Rodriguez 525). Throughout history, there have been various perspectives of multicultural differences. According to Meriam Webster (n.d.), culture is “the beliefs, customs, arts, institutions, and the thoughts or products of a particular society or group.” Unfortunately, African Americans, Native Americans, Italians, Irish, Jews as well as various other cultural groups have been profoundly discriminated against and negatively stereotyped (Good Therapy org.). With the frequent mingling of cultures in educational settings, the workplace, and in the social arena, we are bound to encounter cultural differences.
We need to be aware of the diversity in the classroom. Cultural diversity includes: bi-racial, adoptive, immigrant, gay, and step-families. It is a large majority of the students today even in my generation. Focusing on making a balanced curriculum that exposes the students to all of these different backgrounds is very important. I know that it is likely that a teacher will not be able to cater to every student, but it is important to involve each of them. There is a large percentage of students that have dropped out due to the lack of having a connection with the curriculum. Language is the basis of human communication. It is a cultural and social interaction, and the way language is used is influenced by the circumstances in which it takes place (Emmitt, 2010, p. 49; Green, 2006, p. 2). Children become aware that there are different types of language, including languages used at home, at childcare and at school, as they observe and participate in various language situations (Fellowes & Oakley, 2014, p. 39). Some of these languages may be unfamiliar, and children will need to learn the different roles and uses of language. The different roles of language in a child’s life are, therefore, part of their growing understanding of how to behave in society and in a particular context. As they experience different types and uses of language, children develop an understanding of how to use language appropriately for any given situation.
I have learned in this class that diversity is a number of traits that every person has that makes them an individual these traits can be ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age etc. It is important to stay open with diversity realizing it gives one individuality and is a good thing and people need to become aware of this and keep an open mind.
