Reflection On Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting

I attended the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting on April 12, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. at Highland Heights United Methodist Church. The meeting began with the chairperson welcoming all guests and newcomers and then with a serenity prayer, the reading of the AA preamble and several other readings. There was a large group in attendance with around forty participants, and the group was made up of all ages, ethnicities, and an equal amount of men and women. It was on open-ended group, where individuals share a common problem. The participants within the meeting can leave and others can join at any time while the group is active. There was a lot of strong powerful emotions that were released throughout the meeting. The participants were able to express positive and negative feelings. One of the problems was that some participants did not want to participate and I wonder if that was due to concerns about confidentiality. Another problem was that some of the participants were not listening due to outside noise and distractions. Some of the therapeutic techniques that I saw were empathy, the participants were non-judgmental, and giving the participants an opportunity to enable change in there lives. They also shared a sense of possibility and hope for the future. My experience with the Alcohol Anonymous meeting was exactly what I expected. The participants all seemed to connect and relate to each other’s stories, I noticed several times when participants would laugh and smile at each other. I noticed there was a common theme in all the stories told by the participants; problems that were regarding feeling alone, family problems, and work problems.
