Paradise Lost begins by stating that Adam and Eve’s fall from grace is the fellow rebel angels are chained to a lake of fire in Hell. Satan is a strong, figure with great abilities as a leader but he goes back to Hell in serpent form. Satan gradually degrades himself by the sequence of different shapes he takes on. He is able to disguise himself a humble cherub, then as a cormorant, a toad, and finally a snake. He loses his ability to reason and argue. He persuades the devils to agree with his plan, but later he makes himself believe that the Hell he feels emotionally is reason to do more evil. Beelzebub has suggested that they attempt to corrupt God’s new creation, humankind. Satan agrees, and volunteers to go himself. He is met at the gates by his children Sin and Death, who follow him and build a bridge between Earth and Hell. In Heaven. God talks about how he can see what Satan is planning to do. He orders the angels together for a council meeting of their own. He tells them of Satan’s intentions, and the Son volunteers himself to make the sacrifice for humankind. At this time, Satan travels through Night and Chaos and lands on earth. He takes disguises himself as a cherub and sneaks past Archangel Uriel. Satan takes a moment as he reflects on the splendor of Paradise, it brings him pain rather than pleasure. He then reaffirms his decision to make evil his good, committing crimes against God. Satan leaps over Paradise’s wall, takes the form of a cormorant (large bird), perched atop the Tree of Life. When Adam and Eve return to Paradise, Satan takes the form of a toad and whispers into Eve’s ear. Gabriel the angel finds Satan and orders him to leave. Satan wants to battle Gabriel but God shows the golden scales of justice sign in the sky and Satan runs away. He warns them of Satan’s motive to corrupt them and watch out for Satan. The rebel angels fought a war which lasted two days. God sent his Son to put an end to the war and deliver Satan and his rebel angels to Hell. Eight days after being banished from Paradise, Satan returns taking form of a snake. He convinces Eve to eat of the Tree of Knowledge and she convinces Adam to eat from the tree also. With a display of justice and mercy God send the Son to give out the punishments. The serpent whose body Satan took is condemned to never walk upright again. Adam and Eve will suffer pain and death. Eve and all women will have to suffer pain during childbirth and must submit to their husbands. Adam and all men must hunt and grow their own food on a depleted earth. Satan returned to Hell where everyone thinks he has beaten God. Sin and Death travel the bridge they built on the way to Earth. Against their will the devils are transformed into snakes and try to reach fruit from imaginary trees that wither into dust as they reach for them. The earth is transformed.
