What makes up our personalities? I believe that we are born into this world with a sense of nature that has been passed onto us by our blood, and then our surrounding environment influences us to be who we are today. This is an equally important combination of nature and nurture. There are Several Theories related to this that are reflective of who I am ranging from Freud, Horney, Maslow, to Pavlov and Skinner. Nature Freud States that the human consciousness consists of three distinct parts, the id, ego, and superego. Freud believed that the ego worked to suppress the ids urges and the resolve conflict between the superego and id, Resulting in our personality. With this came several neurotic needs that can be fulfilled according to Horney. There are a few that apply to me. The neurotic need for affection and approval is something that I feel applies to most teenagers; we are trying to find ourselves in this world, and be accepted. I may not be overly sensitive due to this, but I do feel the need to be approved by those important to me in my life. The neurotic need for personal achievement greatly impacts my personality. This is because this I do feel insecure as a person, I often feel like I could excel in some places where I do not, and so I push myself to study harder, be more social etc. as I feel everyone has insecurities that we as a beings try to “improve” even if there may not be a problem to begin with. The neurotic need for perfection and unassailability is the need to be perfect. This is something I feel that everyone can relate to, as we all pick on flaws within ourselves. Resulting in self-alteration. Media is a large influence on this aspect as it creates images of perfection that we try to fit. This causes terrible problems amongst some people such as anorexia. This occurs over an entire life span as the environment creates a series of set reactions, as they are coded into my being. One example of this is how you learn to recognize sounds and associate them with emotions. For me specifically the first time I heard an ice cream trucks song I didn 't recognize it. I then bought my first ice cream from the truck. From then on whenever I thought of ice cream I would crave it. The trucks song would stimulate this, and so my mouth would water. This is a conditioned response to and unconditioned stimuli. This happens in many instances when regarding food and cravings. Another example, of a form of classical conditioning that is solely connected to who I am is how my parents have conditioned me to be selfless in scenarios when children come over. As a host my parents have repeatedly taught me to watch over the children I am overlooking, to ensure entertainment, and make sure they are fed. This is a form of classical conditioning as now whenever a child is present it is as if I have a different mode set on to ensure that the child is having a joyful time. Classical Conditioning was a phenomenon that a man named Ivan Pavlov explored in the twentieth-century. His work laid the foundation for many other psychologists such as John Watson. Pavlov’s idea came when he seized on an incidental observation. He noticed putting food in a dogs mouth caused salvation. However, the dog not only salivated to the food it began to also salivate to mere sight of the food, or the food dish. He began experimenting; first he slid the food presented the food by sliding the food bowl and blowing meat powder into the dogs mouth at the same exact moment. They paired it with a neutral stimuli event the dog could see but did not associate it with food (Myers, 2014, p.256). Food in the mouth automatically, unconditionally triggers the salivary reflex. Pavlov called drooling the unconditioned response and the food the unconditioned stimulus. Salvation in response to a tone is learned, it is conditioned upon the dogs associating the tone with the food it is called conditioned response (Myers, 2014, p.256). Nature vs nurture has been an ongoing debate for many decades among some of the greatest minds in psychology. Everyone is trying to figure out the source of human personality. Does our personality develop primarily by genetics, known as nature or is it based off of our environment and the way we were raised, nature?
