Introduction
The following writing consists of my reflexion on a course that has meant a lot for me. This course was a cultural diversity class that changed the perspective I saw the different people and cultures that live in the United States. As a future psychologist, the experience of the course of cultural diversity will be of substantial help. This is because this course helped me learn important lessons about socialization between multiple nationalities. Coming from a Caribbean Island, I always wanted to visit the United States, but there are not many different people or cultures where I am from. Furthemore, when I got to travel, I came to live in a city where different cultures live and work together. This was shocking for me,
For example, in New York City there are different heritage museums, supermarkets, and even clothing stores pertaining to a specific ethnic group. In addition, for children there are magnet schools that immerse the child to a new culture within the same city. Furtheremore, by socializing with different ethnic groups a person can even learn some of their language. Also, when a person opens their social life to diverse friends, they have friends in different parts of the world without having to travel in order to associate with them. Furthermore, knowing why some cultures behave in a certain way, helps reduce anxiety in a given moment, and allows people to understand each other. For example, occassionaly it may seem that people in a Dominican party are fighting, however, they might just be playing a table game. Therefore, if the Dominicans in the party understand that not all cultures are the same, and they have a guest of another country, the would do the effort of explaining the person, or moderately lower their voices. In conclusion, this book gave me a whole new view on life and how we can interact better with different people. The book emphasized that culture is key to understanding people. Sometimes it is hard to connect with others because they are indicated as different but in due time we can adjust. Every culture has their own traditions when it comes to what they eat, what to wear, dating, various ceremonies, holidays and more. Reading this book helped me become more accepting of who I am and where I come from.
Whether you have experienced a lot of traveling to other countries and continents or perhaps you have never left the East coast, it can be assumed; whether through school or a work environment, you have had at least one experience dealing with different nationalities and cultures. We need to be aware of the diversity in the classroom. Cultural diversity includes: bi-racial, adoptive, immigrant, gay, and step-families. During this semester, I had the opportunity of working with a class of 2nd Graders in the Long Beach area. Even though in my last two serve rotations I was exposed to students from different linguistically and cultural backgrounds, this year I had the opportunity of truly experiencing multicultural diversity in the classroom. Since Jane Addams is located in the ghetto area of Long beach, the majority of the students are the so called minorities. Mrs. Chavarria classroom represented pluralism and world cultures; in her classroom there were Filipinos Samoans, African Americans, Latinos a couple of white kids, and a Hispanic/Chinese boy. One problem that affected my family pretty deeply was diversity issues when they both started working in their careers. My mom and dad both started out in their careers working for Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). “The treatment of Native Americans, Asians, African Americans and Hispanics by California Anglos has been characterized by systematic and individual violence at worst, and consistent political, economic, and social discrimination at best” (DeBow, pg. 238) During the start of their careers, my mom and dad faced difficult challenges, a lot of racism and bullying. My mom would be bullied by her boss and I remember she would complain on a weekly basis of her boss treating her poorly and embarrassing her in front of other employees, until one day her boss moved on to another job. Meanwhile, my dad was bullied by other employees and was constantly being picked on, calling my dad with racial slurs and treating him with a hazing-like mentality. It was brutal, but they both persevered in a way I have never seen to this day. They stuck it out like true champions, but it was a time in their life where they really had only each other. My mom continued to stay, while my dad left for an even better job, thus with City and County. Diversity is still an issue today because I still hear from my dad that he witnesses diversity issues in the workplace.
Cross-cultural experiences allow the partaker to "walk a mile in someone else's shoes." This old adage is quite relevant when addressed to the experience of learning in another surrounding. One gets to encounter how another person lives his or her life. They get to taste the different cuisine, enjoy music, and interact with citizens who are dissimilar. By doing this, the individual is seeing what life is like in another atmosphere. They are becoming aware of the different plights and jubilant exercises someone across the globe views as normal. For instance, if someone from a relatively peaceful country visits a warlike realm, they will understand and see "firsthand" the variation of the two atmospheres. When focusing on the situation, it is easier to clarify why certain individuals behave in a different way. These experiences also teach one about oneself. It offers the chance to promote the great country from which one came. Often, America is stereotyped for all types of ideals, such as baseball and apple pie. However, once entered into a new culture, one can adequately portray America for the diverse melting pot and land of opportunity for all races that it indeed is. Cross-culture is a shared mutual respect for the world in which we live. It offers strong ties to other countries, while promoting the greatness of the red, white, and blue.
The concept of diversity is very broad and it covers many definitions. We can say that, above all, diversity is a characteristic feature of our world and the reality of the society around us. A reality that in recent years has been reinforced by economic globalization, and the mobilization of markets and people. More and more people move around the world, bringing their culture and personal experience. For our society, cultural diversity is a fact that in many years it has become very evident largely due to the incorporation of immigrants. In the case of a business, cultural diversity can bring a number of positive elements such as creativity, innovative spirit, commitment, responsibility, knowledge, experience, etc. However, very often, cultural diversity is interpreted in stereotypes and prejudices. And in a way, more or less open, people are considered different in many cases subject to negative consideration. It is evident that people who only surround themselves with others from the same cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds are only capable of assessing problems the in same way. It has nothing to do with their lack of knowledge on the issue, but rather to do with their lack of cultural diversity. America is often referred to as “The Melting Pot” of the world. With this appellation, it is not wrong to assume that the U.S. has one of the most diverse cultures. Conversely, a majority percentage of people in America would disagree with this sentiment and argue that the U.S. is comprised of many subgroups. These subgroups vary based on race and skin color and are hardly “melted” together. This apparent racial divide is very common in many American corporations as well. Management researchers have found that maintaining a racially diverse workforce has been proven to have many important benefits within a corporation. For example, having a racially diverse workforce can help match the culture of the customers in the economy to build trust, provide new and differing insights, and right some of the wrongs caused by racism and sexism in our society. Facilitating diversity is not easy, and many organizations have encountered challenges from attempting to do so. Fortunately, there actions that organizations can take to overcome these challenges in order to make diversity a reality.
