As a writer, I would like to think that I have progressed a little bit throughout the semester. From the Doyle essay to the Food and Identity paper, there has been some improvements. I feel I have improved when it comes to writing papers that need sources like the what if essay and the food and identity essay. I feel like my creativity aspect has improved a little due to the Doyle essay. This class has also helped me gain a different perspective of other people’s ideas and opinions. I think that is the most helpful thing that I have used while making progress on my writing. Having different perspectives helps me write without having a bias to something. The workshops, whether online as a discussion board or in class, allow me to get feedback from others besides Professor Carter. It gave me a chance to have other perspectives besides my own. Although some of the feedback was not helpful as it was generic or not useful for my piece of writing. The discussion boards also helped me with writing. On some, I questioned why something was believed to be a certain way, but on others, I argued with point of views. It also allowed me to explore different perspectives once again. I guess the whole class helped me as it allowed me to explore different perspective that I never realized or have seen. Although some of the things I did not agree with, it still opened my eyes to a whole new world. A world that I did not realize affected mine. I would write them, reread them, and then edit them. I found it that free writing helped me just think and write everything down without worrying if it made sense or if it went along with my other points. Before this class, I never did free writing. I normally would just start with the introduction and continue the paper from there, but that was not the case this semester. Like with the Doyle Essay, I wrote an introduction and free wrote my paper, allowing my thoughts to just flow and once I was finished, I went back and deleted my introduction because it was not needed. Something else that surprised me is how much I feel the need to write now. I am surprised by how peaceful and calming it is to me. I have found myself writing simply because I am upset, angry or happy. I have always found myself wanting to write more lyrical essays. I have found a new writing style that I have fallen in love with because it is challenging, but exciting at the same time. I also learned that I tend to write better if I am writing in the dark and have music playing through headphones. I have yet to figure out why this works for me when writing because it does not work when I am working on other homework. But I usually get my best ideas at night, so I feel that if I write in the dark, my mind is more open to ideas and
After reading our mentors notes and analyzing what we have learned through this term, I have read all assignments that were submitted before our midterm exam. This gave me chance to follow up with how I advanced my writing skills from the beginning. As it was interesting to see how I can point out the missing qualities of these essays, it was nice to see our mentor’s notes justifying my points.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Pollan’s main point is introducing science into our food system has had more of a negative impact than a positive one, we should go back to eating more of a traditional diet. In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
In general, I like this course because it taught me a lot of great things, such as how to revise the essay in order to make it better. My writing has improved a lot throughout this year, I learned how to organize my essay’s structure, using the transition sandwich to perfect my writing. In the future, I hope to continue developing all the skills that I learned in this English class, and I will continue to go to the Writing Center to ask for help to perfect my writing. However, it is the end of the year, but it does not mean that this is the end of my writing.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
The psychology of eating is an essential field of study in the modern world, especially when it comes to nutritional science. With obesity becoming a major health issue, psychologists have researched the emotional and psychological aspects of eating in an effort to explain eating behavior and help people deal with weight or health issues. This includes a lack of eating or an addiction to. Problems are usually caused by psychological problems relating to food or drinks and can result in eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.

I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.

America is a capitalist society. It should come to a surprise when we live like this daily. We work for profit. We’ll buy either for pleasure or to sell later for profit. It should come to no surprise that our food is made the same way because we are what we eat. We are capitalist that eat a capitalist meal. So we must question our politics. Is our government system to blame for accepting and encouraging monopolies?
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
