Raymond Chandler’s short story “Red Wind” is not a typical detective story since the story belongs to the genre of noir. However, it should have impressed audience in its plot, character hypothesis and using of language. What is worth mentioning in this story is the complicated relationships between main characters. The story surprises me because I could not know what is going to happen in the next scene. And the good thing in a movie or a story is that audience can never expect the ending unless they went through the whole story. The genre of noir is not a common style that people usually read, and therefore a little background introduction is needed here. Typically, noir fiction is literally related to “hard-boiled” detective that is always happened in a crime. Unlike other normal detective stories that we usually seen, in a noir detective story like “Red Wind”, the protagonist is normally not a detective or who is not only a detective but also a victim, witness or perpetrator. a drunkard shots a man named Waldo and walks out of the bar pretending nothing happened. The main character John Dalmas as the witness of this murder and a private detective, he decides to investigate this murder. As the investigation goes on, he finds out many mystery and experiences a lot of danger including almost killed by the drunkard. The story’s “femme fatale”, Lola, loses a pearl necklace which is given by her dead lover, Stan Phillips. The pearl necklace is the reason why Lola wants to meet the victim, Waldo. Lola is physically attractive and no one knows if Dalmas loves her or not. However, Dalmas is willing to help Lola to find the necklace. Unexpectedly, he finds out that the pearl necklace is actually made by Bohemian glass. Dalmas finally decides to hide the truth in order to protect Lola’s feelings.
