Reality television is now one of the most consumed television genres broadcasted to the general public. Over time, reality television is more about mindless watching, and creating the most unrealistic environment possible, rather than creating a show for an important purpose. Today, shows like Beauty and the Geek, Big Brother, and every other reality show fit into this mold, but when viewed critically, lessons appear. In the case of TV today reality shows depict an altered reality, but even though they are unrealistic they promote important life lessons and messages.
Firstly, Beauty and the Geek claimed they conducted the “ultimate social experiment,” and yet remains considered as a show in the genre of reality TV. Since Beauty and the Geek

In this case, Beauty and the Geek is the lesser extreme even though they were both filmed, producers performed edits to the footage to condense and make the show more entertaining. On the other hand, Big Brother had the cameras on contestants 24/7, and their exposure to the camera did not end when the TV screen went black. What “upped the ante” was the ability to allow viewers to tune into the contestants of Big Brother at any time by logging on to Big Brother’s online website, and the constant camera exposure on both shows causes what sociologists call “The Hawthorne Effect.” The name, “Hawthorne Effect,” means a person alters their behavior when they are aware of being observed. If people act differently when they are on a TV show, how is it reality? To prove this point, a person even in real life, not being viewed by a camera, may change their behavior in front of someone because they want to appear in a certain way, and the behavior exhibited is not their true behavior, thus making their actions fake and unrealistic. Another reason a person changes their behavior, for better or worse, in front of a camera includes trying to stand out and attempting to receive high ratings in order to hopefully continue their own career and/or the career of the show. Both shows depict an altered reality because of the “Hawthorne …show more content…
from unexpected people. Contestants in Beauty and the Geek were the stereotypes of the “geek” and the “brain dead gorgeous girl,” and in this case, both sides came to teach the other to be smart or to be more charismatic. When looking at the women on the show, the viewer might think they have nothing to offer when these geeky guys contained all of the smarts, and these girls are considered dumb, but the brainy men actually need the help of these women to improve their social skills. So, this show promotes this idea even though these women appear useless, there partners require what they can offer. It is important to remember for real life interactions because it is better to remain open-minded than close-minded, so a person can learn new skills or information from an unexpected
It is clear that in the world of reality television, personality and popularity are everything. Popularity on reality TV shows can translate into commercial viability and an unreal life beyond reality television.
The shows portrays a melting pot of each character lives with money, sex, social media, and relationships unfiltered and toxic, yet irrelevant to the real –world. Another key point is the exploitation of the television world and the millions of viewers, that it’s okay sociably to exemplify deviant behaviors in real –life. Also, culturally and sociably, the reality show creates a bigger problem as the platform provided for the cast is characterized in a negative state. On the negative side, this creates the illusion to act in like manner, from the deviant behavior portrayed on
The first wave of reality TV shows (such as Survivor, The Weakest Link and Dog Eat Dog) played on people's collective anxieties about the new workplace culture whereby nothing is secure. The threat of expulsion and humiliation is what draws people to this style of programming. This was followed by the lifestyle programs, which were the once removed cousins of Reality TV. Naturally no one is entirely satisfied with the way they live so these programs played on people's desires to improve their lifestyle and living conditions. The third wave of Reality shows (such as Joe Millionaire, The Bachelor and For Love or Money) plays with people's fears of falsified relationships; are there ulterior reasons behind a `supposed' loving relationship (such as money)? The main appeal of Reality television is that the viewer experiences raw human emotions like humiliation, deceit and rejection from a removed perspective. The ability to inspect and analyse the happenings of others without being seen takes on a god-like perspective. It invokes the fantasy of having access to all that is hidden.

Reality based television has a broad landscape ranging from competitive game-like shows to programs following the daily lives of a group of people. Every major network now has some form of reality programming because the genre’s shows are high in viewership and require low costs for production. The genre is appealing to viewers because it provides them with a first-hand look into the lives of everyday people, which allows them to observe social behavior that helps them determine what is appropriate or not (Tyree, 2011, p. 397). Since the majority of modern reality stars start out as unknowns, frequent viewers of reality programming believed that fame is obtainable if they appear on a popular show (Mendible, 2004). According to Mendible’s evaluation of the genre in the article Humiliation, Subjectivity, and Reality TV, people enjoy reality programs beca...
The first effect of reality shows is the image it gives viewers. Reality shows give misconceptions of everyday life; the Real World and Jersey Shore show young adults relaxing, having a good time, and partying every day. The...

Every major network now has some form of reality programming because these programs are high in viewership and require low costs for production. The genre’s shows provide audiences with a first-hand look into the lives of everyday people, which creates resonance among viewers because they feel like they can relate to the characters on screen (Hasinoff, 2008). Since the majority of modern reality stars start out as unknowns, frequent viewers of reality television have essentially bought into the belief that they too can achieve overnight fame by appearing on a popular show (Mendible, 2004). She states that" Actually individuals compare themselves with others for different reasons including: determine relative standing on an issue or related ability; emulate behaviors, determine norms, life sprits or feel better about life and personal situations; and evaluate emotions, personality, and self worth." She believes, social comparison has upward and downward effect on peoples, and those who engaging in upward comparison may learn from other, and be motivated in their life. On the other hand it can be a downward comparison if target is less fortune. I am totally agree with Frisby, I believe reality shows biggest impact on society is social comparison, people analyze themselves with others, according to their talent, wealth, and appearance. Social comparison downward effect on young girls and the way that they see the real life situations. I think many of reality shows today are giving impression that a women 's value is based on their appearance, and have influence them to go under knife, to look prettier. In the other way, reality shows may have also have upward effect, as the author mentioned. People can learn from people in reality tv, they can select them as role model , learn rom their experiences and be inspired by their life and get motivated to reach their
Reality Television has changed television in a way that no one could have imagined. Being the one of the most talked about genre in history, it is seen by millions of viewers. It has more ratings than any other kind of show (Breyer 16). From its start, there have been many Reality Television shows. Shows like The Real World, Survivor, Big Brother, and Jersey Shore. All of these give off a negative portrayal of reality. While Americans watch these shows, it seems that the show is real life, but in reality, no pun intended, before the show is even filmed, it’s written, edited, and produced (Breyer 21). Writers humiliate and degrade people just for the plot of the show, making their private lives public (Breyer 16).
English fashion model Georgia Jagger has made the bold statement that “Reality TV rots people 's brains”. This seems to be a common opinion among many people. Which leads one to wonder why these reality programs are still created year after year despite all of the constant criticism. The reality T.V. show that continue to reel in audiences on a weekly basis seem to be those which have to do with finding love. These types of shows can, and are often, altered to keep the genre from going stale, but essentially they all serve the same purpose. Dating shows aim to match up complete stranger in an attempt of finding “true love”. Although most shows recycle the same program with slight differences, their audience does not seem to go down. The reason
Since the very first reality show launching in 1990, the reality genre has rapidly developed to become the most popular experience of television nowadays. A plethora of research has been undertaking in recent years to identify the origin of reality shows’ appeal which concentrated mainly on the psychological side such as the theory of human motivations called ‘16 basic desires’ which linking the most fundamental purposes of human life to aspirations with their attention to media conducted by Reiss and Wiltz (2004) or the element of mastery sense named ‘schadenfreude’ introduced by Hall (2006).
In this day and age, there isn’t hardly a person who doesn’t watch some form of reality television. Whether it is an adrenaline pumping baking competition, a talent based show with singing and dancing, or the pure entertainment of a day in the life of celebrities most everyone watches some form of reality television. There seems to be a few different sides of reality TV that make it so entertaining for people to watch. There seems to be the shows that lure people in because of the motivational aspect, the drama, or the deep down genuine appearance. However, most people are oblivious to the fact that the screen they are watching isn’t usually what actually happens in real life. James Poniewozik explains the manipulation going on behind the camera
According to Shannon Kelly, reality television has the worst reputation of any type of television programming. Reality tv has gotten bad ratings and reviews due to its violence, profanity, racism, behavior, etc. if these shows had regulations, there wouldn’t be so much negative feedback upon them. “Complaints about the amount of ‘reality’ that is actually a part of reality television, is not the only issue the genre has to contend with.” (Reality TV 62)

On the surface, it seems that the conflicts and the rivalries are only natural for the competitive nature of the program. Yet when you look beyond the surface, you have to wonder how the producers and editors knew that conflict was going to arise in that particular scene? Why is it that certain challenges peg contestants against each other only after the conflict has happened? The more look into reality TV, the more you realize how scripted and manipulative it is. Although reality TV claims to be non-scripted, it is clear that there is a lie in that statement. With the huge advances in technology, it is getting easier and easier to mash up different scenes, conversation and events and make it appear as though it happened consequently at one time. Reality TV is akin to taking apart every sentence, every word written in your favorite novel and re-arranging them in a way that you know will gain more attention, more publicity and therefore, more money and by doing so, it mystifies reality. It has the same concepts of reality, it’s just artificial in the way that it is presented and many people don’t see this. They see the overdone world of celebrities and other TV personalities and aim to be in a similar world. The goal of Reality TV is to create an art piece that captivates the most readers it possibly can. In terms of competitive TV shows, the contestants may have no idea of the tampering that the executives do with the footage and hence you can argue that they (the contestants) are real. However, knowing that the idea of being on TV appeals to many teenagers and adults alike, it’s easy for producers to convince these people to say or do certain things to set up arguments and create the drama and suspense for the viewers. With the addition of the dramatic music and camera tricks, these reality shows become a story. These fabricated stories
