Reality TV is an art form. Reality is defined as: “The world or state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.” It is something that is actually experienced or seen; it’s when something is lifelike – an original. Reality TV is not this at all, it takes what is real and manipulates to a point where it has become real in name only. The purpose of reality TV is not to show a “real” world but rather a distorted, perfect world. The myth creates by reality TV is that it that it is truly reality. ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ is one example of a reality show. ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ shows a myth, an altered form of reality that we begin to see as real because of the way it’s presented. …show more content…

On the surface, it seems that the conflicts and the rivalries are only natural for the competitive nature of the program. Yet when you look beyond the surface, you have to wonder how the producers and editors knew that conflict was going to arise in that particular scene? Why is it that certain challenges peg contestants against each other only after the conflict has happened? The more look into reality TV, the more you realize how scripted and manipulative it is. Although reality TV claims to be non-scripted, it is clear that there is a lie in that statement. With the huge advances in technology, it is getting easier and easier to mash up different scenes, conversation and events and make it appear as though it happened consequently at one time. Reality TV is akin to taking apart every sentence, every word written in your favorite novel and re-arranging them in a way that you know will gain more attention, more publicity and therefore, more money and by doing so, it mystifies reality. It has the same concepts of reality, it’s just artificial in the way that it is presented and many people don’t see this. They see the overdone world of celebrities and other TV personalities and aim to be in a similar world. The goal of Reality TV is to create an art piece that captivates the most readers it possibly can. In terms of competitive TV shows, the contestants may have no idea of the tampering that the executives do with the footage and hence you can argue that they (the contestants) are real. However, knowing that the idea of being on TV appeals to many teenagers and adults alike, it’s easy for producers to convince these people to say or do certain things to set up arguments and create the drama and suspense for the viewers. With the addition of the dramatic music and camera tricks, these reality shows become a story. These fabricated stories
