Realism in Eudora Welty's A Worn Path
Eudora Welty's "A Worn Path" is a story that emphasizes the natural symbolism of the
surroundings. The main character in the story, Phoenix Jackson, is an old black woman who
seeks out to find medicine for her sick nephew. This story contains a motif, which is the
continuous walking of Phoenix Jackson throughout her journey. She lives in the pinewoods
and faces the challenging experience of walking through the snowy, frozen earth to get to
the hospital in the city of Natchez. Phoenix Jackson is a very caring person, and is in
love with life. Although she is very old, it seems that she has many years ahead of her.
Eudora Welty brings realism into the story describing the realities of being old.
It is Christmas, and Phoenix Jackson has to head out to the city to obtain the medicine
for her nephew. A long time ago, her nephew swallowed lye that burned his throat, and the
medicine is the only thing that relieves his pain. The woods are filled with pine trees
that cast dark shadows throughout the terrain. The darkness that surrounds Phoenix is the
total opposite of her. She is a poor woman, but is very neat and tidy. She appreciates
the small things in life and respects what she has. Although she is old, she has
extremely dark hair, wears a red bandana, and has much "life" within her:
Her skin had a pattern all its own of numberless branching wrinkles and as though a whole
little tree stood in the middle of her forehead, but a golden color ran underneath, and the two knobs of her cheeks were illumined by a yellow burning under
the bark. (87)
It is almost as if she is a part of nature herself, when Eudora Welty describes her as
having a tree within her forehead. ...

represent natural symbolism that is directly related to the realism of Phoenix Jackson.
The windmill is a perfect representation of the circle of life, and Phoenix has many more
years to live. When Phoenix dies, her spirit of the Phoenix bird will live on in her
nephew who most likely will live a long, happy life.

There are also mental obstacles that obstruct Phoenix’s journey. She has to triumph over her weariness because of her old age and her mental fatigue. As she is walking her mind plays tricks on her, such as the time when she is in the field and mistakes the scarecrow for a dark mysterious figure that she is frightened of. Another time is when she talks to herself and the animals in the woods. She tells them not to get in her way because she has a long trip ahead of her. The love that one person gives to another is never truly appreciated until the recipient realizes what that person has actually done. The grandson may be too ill or even too young to realize what his grandmother is doing for his safety.

“A Worn Path” is a short story written by Eudora Welty. It is based on an elderly African-American grandmother named Phoenix Jackson, who goes for a walk to the town of Natchez on a cold December morning to get some medicine for her ailing grandson. This story speaks of the obstacles Phoenix endured along the way and how she overcame them. The theme, central idea or message that the author wishes to convey to his or her readers, in “A Worn Path” is one of determination. Phoenix Jackson is determined to get to Natchez, in order to get medicine for her grandson; she does not let any obstacles get in her way. The theme of determination is shown in many ways throughout this short story.
In "A Worn Path", a short story by Eudora Welty, the main character, an old colored woman named Phoenix, slowly but surely makes her way down a "worn path" through the woods. Throughout her journey, she runs into many obstacles such as a thorny bush and a hunter. She overcomes these obstacles and continues with her travels. She finally reaches her destination, the doctor’s office, where she gets medicine for her sick grandson back home. Many critics have speculated that this short story represents the love a grandmother shows for her grandson. Others say this story represents life and death, where Phoenix represents an immortal figure. Dennis J. Sykes disagrees with the other critics by saying, "A parallel exists between the journey described and the plight of the Southern blacks after the Civil War" (Sykes). Ultimately, Eudora Welty demonstrates how blacks have been persecuted in a white world.
At first glance, what makes a fairy tale a fairy tale may seem obvious—some kind of magic, hidden symbols, repetition, and of course it’s evident it’s fiction—but fables are more than that. As Arthur Schelesinger puts it, it’s about “[expanding] imagination” and gaining understanding of mysterious places (618). While doing this, it also helps children to escape this world, yet teach a lesson that the reader may not be conscious of. A wonderful story that achieves all of this is Cinderella, but not the traditional tale many American’s have heard. Oochigeaskw, or The Rough-Faced Girl, and Ashputtle would be fitting for a seven-year-old because they get the gears of the mind turning, allowing for an escape on the surface, with an underlying enlightenment for children of the ways of the world.
In conclusion, the extent to which a specific fairy tale meets Zipes’ definition varies dependent upon its adaptability and acceptance by society. Some fairy tales are harder to manipulate and their plot is insufficient to reflect society’s values so not all fairy tales are institutionalised. Thus, the manipulation of Little Red Riding Hood throughout its history and its adaptability to a myriad of usage passes Zipes’ definition of ‘institutionalisation’.
Phoenix's precarious journey may seem dangerous, but her determination is what carries her through the obstacles she faces as she makes her way through the woods. Phoenix makes her way across the worn path and discovers many active opponents. She continues forward over barriers that would not even be considered a hindrance for the young. The long hill that she takes tires her, the thornbrush attempts to catch her clothes, the log that Phoenix goes across endangers her balance as she walks across it, and the barbed-wire fence threatens to puncture her skin. All of these impediments that Phoenix endures apparently do not affect her because she is determined that nothing will stop her on her journey. Fairy tales portray wonderful, elaborate, and colorful worlds as well as chilling, frightening, dark worlds in which ugly beasts are transformed into princes and evil persons are turned to stones and good persons back to flesh (Guroian). Fairytales have long been a part of our world and have taken several forms ranging from simple bedtime stories to intricate plays, musicals, and movies. However, these seemingly simple stories are about much more than pixie dust and poisoned apples. One could compare fairytales to the new Chef Boyardee; Chef Boyardee hides vegetables in its ravioli while fairytales hide society’s morals and many life lessons in these outwardly simple children stories. Because of this fairytales have long been instruments used to instruct children on the morals of their culture. They use stories to teach children that the rude and cruel do not succeed in life in the long run. They teach children that they should strive to be kind, caring, and giving like the longsuffering protagonists of the fairytale stories. Also, they teach that good does ultimately defeat evil. Fairy tales are not just simple bedtime stories; they have long been introducing cultural moral values into young children.

Normally, when one was a child, our parents would tell us fairy tales as bed time stories, or to simply entertain us. This is a worldwide tradition in which every parent tells their child the stories they were told when they were little, or new stories. There are infinite stories to be told as well as infinite stories that have already been written or told. Our text book describes fairy tales as cautionary tales designed to frighten us, as children, into proper and obedient behavior (pg 169). They are to warn people of potential dangers. Through the years, we have all heard variations of the stories of “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Hansel and Gretel,” along with many more. In these narratives, we are supposed to notice the underlying dangers of talking to strangers, wondering around without adults, and the dangers of not listening to authority. There are also deeper meanings to these stories, such as protecting your virginity and to be wary of situations where death is possible. These may seem a little too dark for children, but it all depends on how deep you want to read into the narratives.
