The end of the twentieth century and the start of the twenty-first century have been heavily influenced by the development of technology. Due to the incorporation of personal devices in society, it has created a society where people do not communicate with themselves to the fullest extent. However, of all of the age groups, teenagers have been affected the most by the new technological wave. One of the major points presented by Marie Winn is that by reading children gain the “rudiments of writing”(Winn, 253). While reading, a child will recognize that a word is said in a certain way that will eventually translate into a child learning how to write words. For children gain writing skills by reading, Winn shows that by reading a child not only gains a beneficial experience but also a chance to improve their writing skills. In addition to improving their writing skills, a child can also develop an imagination through reading books. When a child reads a book, they begin to create pictures within his mind, which leads to a better imagination. On the other hand, viewing provides a child with images which do not exercise the viewer's imagination. Winn’s final argument is that reading allows children to gain improved concentration skills. When a child reads, he or she requires a higher level of concentration because he is required to decipher abstract figures into meaning. This is presented through Mildred when she is shown unconscious on her bed with “little seashells”(53, Bradbury) in her ears with an “electronic ocean sound playing”(53, Bradbury). Bradbury displays Mildred in this way to show how she does not have critical thinking skills, which is why she has listened to the voice in the seashells and taken the pills. Since the society Bradbury created has banned reading it makes sense that its citizens resort to destructive uses of their time such as swallowing pills for no reason. Through Mildred’s action, Bradbury is asserting the message that technology has created a society dependent on an authority figure to tell them what to do. Doctor Jean Twenge is an American psychologist who published an article for The Atlantic titled “Has the Smartphone Destroyed a Generation?” in September 2017. The purpose of Twenge’s article is to highlight the growing burden of smartphones in our current society. She argues that teenagers are completely relying on smartphones in order to have a social life, which in return is crippling their generation. Twenge effectively uses rhetorical devices in order to draw attention to the impact of smartphones on a specific generation.
Pearson UK (n.d.) stated “Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. In fact, reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.” This review and comparison consists of two lessons. One lesson presented by Megan Tupper is a comprehension and rhyming lesson that helps children understand the body characteristics and the understanding of what their body characteristics do in the story Eyes, Nose, Fingers, and Toes (Hindley & Granstrm, 1999). Another lesson presented by Nina Deroziere where she used her talent to bridge the gap between music and language arts by reading the story Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon (Lovell & Catrow, 2001).

The author argues that the society in which young adults grow up, reflects on their view of the world. Growing up in a technologically advanced society, teens seem ill prepared to deal with their day to day surroundings that require social interaction. Many millennials show little interest in anything dealing in the past. Instead, they are focused on the future and the next great technological advancement. Lastly, at the end of her essay, Turkle expresses the true social issues of teens due to the abundance of technology. She claims, “teenagers who will only ‘speak’ online, who rigorously avoid face-to-face encounters, who are in text connect with their parents fifteen or twenty times a day, who deem even a telephone call ‘too much’ (243). Turkle claims that there are consequences resulting on the heavy reliance of technology. Teens only speak over text and cannot even speak on the telephone, because they are too internal. Rather than speaking externally with others, teens are quiet while only communicating with themselves and over the phone. They would rather write words, than speak them. Bauerlein begins his piece by asserting that “digital diversions,” which is anything technological that distracts the younger generation from finer past times, are in fact cutting the younger generation off from culturally enhancing mediums and is in turn making the teenagers less intelligent. Bauerlein continues to claim that it is the responsibility of adults to guide the younger generation towards meaningful topics. The author adds that teenagers live life minute to minute and because of that suggests that the younger generation is not concerned with the past. Bauerlein states that because of technological advances, including cell phones teenagers are in constant contact with each other. The author states that this constant contact with peers makes it very difficult for adults in the younger generation’s life to guide them toward cultural topics. Bauerlein then adds that if the younger generation continues to indulge in “digital diversions” and is not guided by adults to finer pastimes by the time they are in college they will never take part in high culture. Bauerlein concludes that “digital diversions” and lack of adult guidance will result in a less intelligent generation.
Too much of a snare? With the announcement of the new iPhone 7, and the continued release of new features and accessories, technological involvement in everyday lives is only increasing, and parents are still stuck in the past with technological restrictions. In the news articles Blame Society, Not the Screen Time by Danah Boyd and Don’t Limit Your Teen’s Screen Time by Chris Bergman, both authors express their thoughts on this generation’s teenager’s use of technology and why guardians should allow their kids to utilize the internet. The authors use rhetorical appeals to persuade and convince their audiences that technology and the internet is a safe place for teenagers to find their interests and be themselves. While Bergman does a better job appealing logically to the audience through pointing out parents’ hypocrisy, Boyd effectively balances ethos and pathos by gaining credibility as a researcher on the topic of screen time and excelling in connecting with her audience emotionally with her experiences as a teenager in the past.
During adolescence, I began reading and writing through a fundamental learning program called, "Hooked on Phonics." This program consisted of long hours spent reading short novels and writing elementary phrases which were commonly taught in the second and third grade. With the motto, "Improve your child's reading and writing skills in just four weeks!" I was bound to become the next Mark Twain. The method of this course specialized in the improvements of word acquisition rates as well as reading speed; however, it lacked in the area of teaching comprehension. At a young age, I was instilled with the dire need to be highly educated and although I was unable to experience a fun and adventurous childhood like many other children, I am grateful for being raised with a greater knowledge and wisdom than that ingrained in many.

As a fellow teen, in my daily life, I use technology constantly. Either in school or outside of school. I feel teens rely on today’s technology to heavily that it may be having harmful affects on teens. The youth of today are constantly engaged in technological advancements. technology promote nonstop communication and instant gratification. whether through cell phones, gaming systems, laptops, or i pods. are these technological advancements a good thing? The growth of technology has negatively influenced the social interactions of today's youth because it isolates individuals from reality, hinders communication, and effects the teens learning ability.
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
Reading and writing has always played a vital part in my life. From toddler to adult, pre-elementary to college, I’ve managed to sharpen both skills to my liking. However, even though it significantly helped, schooling was not what influenced me to continue developing those skills into talent. Many different things shaped and influenced my learning, and now reading and writing have become the safety net of my life. I know that even if I have nothing else in the future, I’ll still have my talent and knowledge. To ensure my success, I hope to further develop those skills so that I may fulfill my wishes.
Teens may be technologically savvy, important in a culture reliant on technology, but have fewer skills in dealing with real people. The economic divide pushes those without financial means further from those with internet access and the latest gadgets. How did we survive as teenagers without cell phones and texting? Increasing reliance on e-communication puts those unable to avail themselves of technology at greater disadvantage as they enter adulthood and the workforce. Nevertheless, these problems are not confined to the youth of the world.
Every child deserves a positive, safe, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment where they will grow academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. My role as an educator is to provide my students with this type of environment as well as an education that will help them succeed academically and become life long learners. It is the responsibility of a literacy educator to provide students with this type of environment, but also to provide instruction that will help students become successful readers and writers. There are numerous programs and philosophies about literacy and reading. Through years of experience and research, one begins to develop their own creative approach on teaching these skills. After looking at different programs and seeing the positive and negatives of each, an integrated and balanced approach of literacy seems to be the best way to teach the differing needs of each student.
There has been a long lasting debate in the resent years on whether or not technology has a positive or negative impact on today’s kids. Smartphones have become a problem in today’s generation especially for adolescences that has shown a decline in focus and intellect in the past few years. Although smartphones are created to help make communication easier, they also affect youth’s performance and productivity in school, in their workplace, home, and their communication with adults. Other teenagers use social media to express their feelings online and to release their anger and stress. Most of the time, when teenagers reveal too much on the internet, violence and rumours can take place afterwards, which results in arguments and misunderstandings. The youth today feel as if they cannot live without their smartphones and without access to the internet. They have become highly dependent on their smartphones and this has changed the way youth interact with adults. The advancement of smartphones has negatively impacted youth’s social relationship with their teachers, employers and their parents.
Literature has an enormous impact on a child’s development during the early years of his or her life. It is important for parents and teachers to instill a love of reading in children while they are still young and impressionable. They are very naive and trusting because they are just beginning to develop their own thoughts, so they will believe anything they read (Lesnik, 1998). This is why it is so important to give them literature that will have a positive impact. Literature can make children more loving, intelligent and open minded because reading books gives them a much wider perspective on the world. Through reading, children’s behavior can be changed, modified or extended, which is why books are so influential in children’s lives while they are young (Hunt, 1998). Literature has the power to affect many aspects of a child’s life and shapes their future adult life.
