Everyone knows that family is very important to who someone is and will grow up to be. But a subsection of people think it's more important to have a healthy relationship with everyone around you. Even though these are great opinions, I think that it is important to love and respect others and winning isn’t everything. In the story “Raymond’s Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, the theme is slowly introduced through the beginning, middle and end of the story. Initially, Toni develops the theme through inner dialogue and character interaction. The first time that character interaction is used is when Raymond was being bullied, so she stepped in saying,“That’s right, Fatso. And the next word out of anybody and I’ll be their mother too.”(13) Of course this shows her being outright rude to them. And I get they’re bullies, but that's not an excuse to act that way. The next piece of evidence uses inner dialogue when she shows she doesn’t care about repercussions,”I much prefer to just knock you down right from the jump and save everyone a lot of precious time”(6). The first thing this happens is when she thinks to herself, “You’d think they’d know better than to encourage that kind of nonsense. I am not a strawberry. I do not dance on my toes. I run.”(15) she said this whilst reminiscing on her memories of the days when her mom forced her into a pageant. Of course this again shows up later on when she’s thinking,”he’s got no right to call me Squeaky, if I can’t call him Beanstalk.“Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker,” I correct him and tell him to write it down on his board.”(18) She thinks very poorly of the man with the clipboard which also shows that she doesn’t respect most people for who they are, but instead how she thinks they are. This does die down and reveal the theme of this story in the third and final body
