The Banana Man Have you ever thought you could claim that a banana or a soda can was designed by a God? I never have, but one man named Ray Comfort and his partner claimed that god designed the whole universe for us based off of not only a banana but a soda can as well. Ray Comfort is known as a Christian minister and his partner Kirk Cameron is known as an actor. Ray Comfort uses Cameron as limelight to get his claim out there and noticed. He also uses his minister persona to reach out non-believers, Christians and uneducated people about his findings. The claim that Ray Comfort makes about how the banana and soda can show us that the universe is designed by God is very flawed and problematic.

Comfort generalizes it by telling us that because the banana is made for man that universe was based off the creation of the banana and soda can. Ray Comforts argument is based off the characteristics of the banana. He describes the banana in a way that makes us feel like the banana is meant for human hands. The banana has a non-slip surface which makes it easier for us to hold. It also has a tab in which it’s easy to remove the peel off. The taste buds in the banana are also tasty. These features of the banana do not describe who the actual designer is. All these claims maybe true, but I can see that it creates a major flaw. One fallacy that I can tell is clear is the cherry picking fallacy. According to Logical Fallacious, an online source by “Cherry picking is when only select evidence is presented in order to persuade the audience to accept a position, and evidence that would go against the position is withheld. The stronger the withheld evidence, the more fallacious the argument.” (Bo Bennett) Ray Comfort seemed to pick a banana to persuade the audience that it is the almighty fruit. Some examples that I can think in which counter argue him are other fruits that are also made for humans but are difficult to consume. These fruits include pineapples, coconuts, as well as well nuts. According to About Education, “The earliest banana evidence found in Africa is from Munsa, a site in Uganda dated to 3220 cal BC, although there are problems with the stratigraphy and chronology. The earliest well-supported evidence is at Nkang, a site located in southern Cameroon, which contained banana phytoliths dated between 2,750 to 2,100 BP. Like coconuts, bananas were most widely spread as a result of the sea exploration of the Pacific by Lapita peoples ca 3000 BP, of extensive trade voyages throughout the Indian Ocean by Arab traders, and of exploration of the Americas by Europeans. (Hirst) Ray Comfort fails to bring about how the first banana also known as the wild banana was actually created. The wild banana unlike the domesticated banana is not as easy to eat. The wild banana has seeds inside that aren’t as enjoyable as the domestic banana. Ray comfort also fails to talk about the domestication of the banana is designed for humans by the almighty God himself. If he would have informed his audience about the history of the banana his argument might have been more
While it is still unsure when and how banana cultivators reached the Americas, it is sure that they have been present in the region for about 400 years. Banana trade formed itself around a single species of banana called Gros Michel. The banana is a narrow genetic base that shapes its future export production in tedious ways. For example, Argo-ecosystems were a result of small and large-scale production of Gros Michel bananas. Which are “places created and transformed by fluid processes that are subject to change over time and space” (Soluri 5). Natural habitats were replaced and spaces were created that invited the pathogens with Gros Michel’s monocultures, which caused problems for
In Charles Darwin’s life he had helped make a significant advancement in the way mankind viewed the world. With his observations, he played a part in shifting the model of evolution into his peers’ minds. Darwin’s theory on natural selection impacted the areas of science and religion because it questioned and challenged the Bible; and anything that challenged the Bible in Darwin’s era was sure to create contention with the church. Members of the Church took offense to Darwin’s Origins of Species because it unswervingly contradicted the teachings of the book of Genesis in the Bible. (Zhao, 2009) Natural selection changed the way people thought. Where the Bible teaches that “all organisms have been in an unchanging state since the great flood, and that everything twas molded in God’s will.” (Zhao, 2009) Darwin’s geological journey to the Galapagos Islands is where he was first able to get the observations he needed to prove how various species change over t...
The intricacy of a simple time telling device has sparked controversy about the creation of the universe. In William Paley’s “The Analogical Teleological Argument” he argues that the universe must have been created by a universe maker, God, due to its complexity. However, David Hume, provides an empiricist objection by arguing that one cannot prove the existence of a universe maker due to lack of experience regarding the creation of a universe. Ultimately, I will argue that Paley’s argument by design is not sufficient for proving God 's existence because, as individuals, we cannot assume that the world works the way we wish it.
In his introduction, Soluri introduces his idea of the banana as a symbol, something that he repeats throughout the book. I believe this is one of his strongest arguments. To him, the banana is a symbol of the "distance" (2) between those who grow the banana and those who consume. According to Soluri, while the actual fruit lost its exoticism
Ray Charles one of the greatest African-American artists of all time. He left a legacy of hits and Grammy awards, but the musicians he influenced were very diverse in genre as the music he wrote, arranged, performed, and recorded. Ray Charles died at the age of 73 on June 10, 2004 from acute liver disease. Months after his death on October 29, 2004 the movie Ray was released to the U.S on a budget of forty million dollars. The film went on to become a box-office hit, earning over $100 million dollars with an additional $75 million internationally. It ended up with a worldwide gross of over $175 million.
It was commonly believed that early hominids left the jungle to live on the open plains of Africa. Called the Savannah Theory, it was strongly promoted by Professor Raymond Dart, after he gained recognition for discovering the Taung skull in 1925. The Taung skull was the first admitted link between man and ape, and Prof. Dart based his theory on the modern location of the discovered fossils. However, a report in 2000 by Marc Verhaegen claims that a savanna evolution is extremely improbable. Based on biological and physiological data, he tries to disprove the savanna theory and suggests that our evolution would more likely occur in a humid and wet setting than the dry heat of the grasslands.

It is evident that McCloskey’s arguments in an attempt to disprove the existence of God lacks evidence. He disputes the existence of God based on a lack of undisputable evidence, but he provides no undisputable evidence to counter this existence. He dismisses the idea of a creator by theory of evolution. Although he may have a valid argument for evolution he still does not account for the start of the world. Everything must come from something. The cause cannot be unlimited, there was a cause that had to be free of all other causes, and this points us to creation.
Along the Caribbean coastline a banana business became a United States capitalist empire, which shaped the course of twentieth-century Central American history and nationalism (Langley 33). As American businessmen and entrepreneurs had their eye on profits they turned to Central America and the Caribbean as an untapped or uncultivated abundant source of bananas. Thus the “banana men” stormed the weak political fronts in this area, such as Nicaragua and Honduras, to begin their venture of bananas by taking advantage of the political and economic climate. These were areas prone to exploitation because of their weak political systems, which eventually lead to the capitalist expansion and market driven destruction of the region by the “banana men”.
According to Philo Cleanthes’s argument of design does not work because it is a bad comparison. Arguing that the universe is like a machine as imaginative as it may seem, does not work, because it is a comparison of a part of a whole and that is problematic because there is no way to compare a part of something, to that something is part of that something is completely unknown. By saying “observing the growth of a hair, can we learn anything concerning the generation of a man?” in page 24, Philo reveals a fatal weakness in Cleanthes’s comparison. Just like it is impossible to know the generation of a human being by observing how his hair grows, it is impossible to understand the universe in its entirety by understanding how a machine. Philo contends that Cleanthes’s comparison may be too narrow for a universe with so much diversity, in page 25 “When nature has so extremely diversified her manner of operation in this small globe; can we imagine that she incessantly copies herself throughout so immense a
Thirteen point seven billion years ago the universe went from a small and dense state, to an exponentially large state. Big things do come in small packages. However this is not the only story of the creation of the universe and it’s inhabitants. On November fourth two thousand and fifteen two scientists went head to head to prove which creation story would be a “viable model for today's modern science,” creation or evolution. Defending the side of evolution was none other that an old friend from our childhood, Bill Nye, also known as Bill Nye the Science Guy. No doubt wonderful memories are flooding into your brain right now. Defending the side of creation is a man named Ken Ham, also known as the man you have probably never heard of before. Each side had a limited time to argue their topics. In the end of this debate,
In conclusion, it is my belief that the universe came about from a creator of intelligent design. The basis for this belief is probably more biased than concrete. However, I still hang on to the fact on the Bible is an eye witness account to the occurrence of the creation of all.
The origin of the coconut is unknown; however, many historic records show varying accounts of the origin of the coconut. Cumo (2013) wrote in his books of ‘Encyclopedia of cultivated plants: from Acucia to Zinnie’ about the origin of coconut. He stated that in the 19th century, scientists proposed the coconut is an origin in central or South America where fossil evidence proves coconuts grow in prehistoric times. Other than that, various authorities have proposed Melanesia and India where Melanesia is one of the candidates because it is supported by a scientist documented that large population of insects that feed on coconut implying that it has long been part of the flora of the islands (Cumo, 2013). Meanwhile, a coconut-like fossil dating
The purpose of this paper is to briefly analyze why burrs and rough spots suddenly started to appear on quarter panel parts at an automotive company. Three out of four production lines at an automotive plant facility experienced defects of manufactured panel parts. Also, an analysis of how the panel problem is related to organizational sub-culture, organizational politics and job stress. Although there are several implications of various issues related to organizational culture, organizational politics and job stress is important because it determines how human capital within an organization will demonstrate the capacity to cope with working for the organization, thus determining the success of the organization. “To illustrate, studies have shown that job stress results from the interaction of the worker and the conditions of the workplace, i.e., the culture (Vigoda, 2002).” “Likewise, there are studies conducted that found organizational politics to have an adverse effect on psychological issues such as job stress (Ferris, Russ, & Fandt,1989).” Therefore, an organizations most valued asset is its employees.
