You never realize how much you have until it’s gone. In “All Summer in a Day,” the children only get dreadful, sorrowful rain every single day. They try to dream of a better place, where the sun is shining and the rain is gone, only to be woken by the drumming of the heavy rain. The rain has taken over their lives, and the only way to escape is to use the sun. Only Margot remembers the sun for what it is, and still tries to desperately hold onto those memories. In the story, author Ray Bradbury uses several craft moves such as similes, metaphors, and symbolism to emphasize the importance and power of the sun and nature. As an example, “And the jungle burned with sunlight as the children, released from their spell, rushed out, yelling into the springtime.” When the children lock Margot in the closet prior to feeling the sun, it is because the children are devoid of any emotion, and feel no empathy or emotion towards Margot. They are heartless prior to feeling the warmth of the sun. They only feel remorse and guilt after experiencing the warmth of the sun, further solidifying the symbolism of the sun. Only after the feel the warmth of the sun do they realize the wrongness of their actions. Without the sun, they lack any human emotion. The rain drives them bitter and insane, and they lose any features that make them human. They are pale and lifeless, both in appearance and in emotion. The usage of the word “spell” indicates that they weren’t humanlike prior to feeling the sun. They were under a spell of a sort that made them inhuman and emotionless. With no sun, they have no emotions, feelings or happiness. Only after encountering the sun, do they feel emotions. This “spell” made them nothing but ghosts of what were once children, and all human emotions and feelings were gone. The rain made the children lifeless and all the emotions that made them human were gone. So, when they lock Margot in the closet, they think nothing of it. Only after feeling the warmth of the sun do they gain all emotion and feelings, and realize the horrid act they had to commit to Margot, who, like them, just wanted to feel the sun.
