It has been raining for seven long, treacherous years without stopping. In the science fiction short story, “All Summer in a Day,” by Ray Bradbury, it has been raining on Venus for seven years. In the short story, Bradbury writes about a child’s life on Venus. Her name is Margot, and she was born on Earth and moved to Venus when she was four years old. In the short story and movie, many similarities and differences were present.
Between the short story and the movie, many similarities were shown. To start, a similarity in both the short story and the movie was that Margot was locked in the closet by her peers to show their dislike for her. short story it states, “They surged about her, caught her, and bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door.” This is a similarity because both the short story and the movie shows Margot missing her opportunity to see the sun by being locked in a closet. Likewise, another similarity in both the movie and short story, was that the children felt guilty after locking Margot in the closet, therefore taking away the one thing she needed to boost her spirit. Evidently, in the short story it states, “They turned through the doorway to the room in the sound of the storm and thunder, lightning on their faces, blue and terrible.” This excerpt from the short story shows how guilty the children felt knowing they had taken away a valuable privilege from an innocent child. Lastly, the short story and the movie shared common characteristics that made them similar. Furthermore, differences between the short story and the movie were also very obvious. Even though the short story and the movie contained many similarities, they also contained several differences.
To begin with, a difference between the short story and the movie was that in the short story, the text claimed they were underground. In the movie, it portrayed that they were on ground level. For example, the short story says that the children were underground because there were tunnels that led upward. On the other hand, the movie visually shows the children living on ground level, since the windows looked directly out to the ground. This is a major difference because in the story, it mentioned lightning striking the ground, so if in the movie the building was on the ground, there was a chance it could be struck by lightning. In addition, another difference was the fact that William said locking Margot in the closet was a joke in the movie, while in the short story, William does it intentionally. In the short story, it states that the children intentionally locked Margot in the closet without wanting to let her out, since the children smiled, then ran off to find the teacher. In the movie, William says that he was going to let out Margot after a few minutes, and that locking Margot in the closet was a joke. This is a difference, since in the short story, the attack on Margot was not meant to have been a joke, while in the movie, it was. In conclusion, the short story and the movie had many important differences that are able to be noticed by both the reader and
viewer. Many similarities and differences were visible in both the short story and the movie. Overall, the similarities and differences between the two made them both unique. Even though the short story and the movie were both intriguing, I preferred the short story over the movie because it allows the reader to see things from their perspective.

Margot goes to school with classmates that resent her. They hate her for having seen the sun, something they wanted so badly. This jealousy led to an overwhelming hatred that they were reminded of any time they saw her. Her classmates let their hatred take over and they locked her in a closet as revenge for the pain she had caused them all. But unlike Wendy and Peter from The Veldt, Margot was affected negatively from her classmateś actions.
Back in 1990, a man named Gary Soto decided to write an autobiography about himself, titled A Summer Life. One of the more interesting portions of the book was when Mr. Soto described a summer day back when he was six years old. On that day, young Gary found out what it felt like to be a true sinner, as he stole an apple pie from the local bakery. Some readers found this as one of the more interesting parts, not because of the plot, but because of the literary devices used, such as detail, imagery, and pacing. The three aforementioned literary devices are almost a backbone to the story, because without those three, the story would be shortened and fairly bland. In the novel, Lennie is said to be “a huge man” (2), but in the movie he isn’t very big, although he is bigger than George and some of the other characters. The short story All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury is about bad judgement and illustrates the effect it can have on one's actions. All Summer in a Day is about the story of a girl named Margot and life on Venus. The story takes place on Venus the day before the Sun will finally come out, and this day proves especially challenging for Margot. The Sun only comes out once every seven years, and this leads to Margot suffering at the hands of her fellow classmates. Throughout the story, there are times when Margot is shoved, insulted and abandoned by the school children of Venus and these points prove how bad judgement prevails over other themes to be the main idea.

The story of Summer, by David Updike, is set during that idyllic time in life when responsibility is the last word on anyone's mind. And yet, as with all human affairs, responsibility is an ever-present and ever-necessary aspect to life. What happens when the protagonist, Homer, loses his awareness of a certain personal responsibility to maintain self-control? Homer's actions increasingly make him act foolishly, internally and externally. Also, how does Homer return to a sense of sanity and responsibility? To a degree, I would say that he does.

No matter what was going on around them, war, crime, or death, they were always happy… Or were they? Ray Bradbury wrote books about censorship in society forming around being censored totally or partially from books and television. In Fahrenheit 451 the main character, Montag, is a fireman whose job it is to burn books to keep the public from reading then and coming up with their own thoughts and ideas and not the ideas that the government puts in their heads. Wile he is burning books one day he opens one to read it and becomes obsessed with reading books. He turns on his fire chief and burns him, and goes to live with people who also read books and memorize them so that they can be reprinted then society is ready for them again. Three people that show that they are happy on the outside but are not truly happy are Montag, Mildred and Mrs. Phelps.
A lack of practicing empathy can negatively impact relationships and society. In the short story, “All Summer in a Day”, by Ray Bradbury, portrays a little girl that is in a society where empathy is less important to encourage younger generations to have. Bradbury states in the 5th paragraph of the story, “‘Aw, you didn’t write that!’ protested one of the boys. ‘I did,’ said Margot. ‘I did.”’ In this quote, the little girl, Margot, just shared a poem with the class and her classmate, William, decided to basically call her a liar and say that she didn’t come up with the poem by herself. As all of this is happening, the rest of class sits there listening and not depending Margot as she gets bullied. The lack of empathy is shown here, because out of the whole class, someone most likely has been bullied before and understands the feeling Margot must be having, but yet no one stands up for her.
Fahrenheit 451 is a literary work of art. It is a novel about censorship and one mans fight against it. The story was written in the fifties, but is set in the future. Ray Bradbury’s prediction of what the future will be like is precise in some aspects, but completely outrageous in others. He pictures the future as a somewhat a dictatorship government. The government controlled everything in their lives. People don’t think either. Technology is made it so that people are given all their information through a television sort of a device that imitates a family. Books are obsolete, so they are burned. Our hero of this story is a “fireman';. Only, these futuristic firemen don’t fight fires, they burn books. They burn them so people don’t think, and so everyone is of equal intelligence. They don’t want anyone to rise up and be higher than the next person. This fireman’s name is Guy Montag. He lives in a condominium with his wife Mildred. The story sets off as Guy is walking home from work.
In the book Fahrenheit 451 the theme is a society/world that revolves around being basically brain washed or programmed because of the lack of people not thinking for themselves concerning the loss of knowledge, and imagination from books that don't exist to them. In such stories as the Kurt Vonnegut's "You have insulted me letter" also involving censorship to better society from vulgarity and from certain aspects of life that could be seen as disruptive to day to day society which leads to censorship of language and books. Both stories deal with censorship and by that society is destructed in a certain way by the loss of knowledge from books.
